Thank you for sharing your story. As the months get closer to the time that I will be getting a grey myself, I love to read the stories that everyone posts on here. Enjoy your life together!

Hehe too cute!

Okay, so I called my avian vet. She said that what may have looked like a lot of blood to me probably wasn't (I guess a teaspoon of blood is a lot more than people think it is [a teaspoon of blood is ten percent of a male cockatiels blood]). and that I should make him some hard boiled egg and monitor his behavior and see if the foot swells or gets infected. This was a total relief. I didn't get a wink of sleep last night worried about the little guy! Thank you for the comforting advice, guys. You're amazing <3

Thank you guys! He made it through the night okay, fluffed up in his cage. This morning he woke me up as per usual, imitating my alarm, and he seemed okay. I'm going to give the vet a call anyway, just to make sure. I still can't figure out how this happened!

Hi, this isn't about a grey but I love you guys and hope you can offer some advice. Last night I went to my boyfriends. My mother was keeping an eye on the animals for me. I came home tonight and went to take Shelby, my tiel, out of his cage. I saw that his back nail was almost off at the quick, and was bleeding a little. I took him into the bathroom and grabbed the animal first aid kit. I went to put some stopping powder on his foot, he freaked out and flew into the door. I just let his flights grow in. I picked him up from the floor and held him. He seemed fine until I switched hands and saw a pool of blood. He was so stunned that he let me put some cream on it. The bleeding has stoped. His feathers by his foot are blood stained, I am covered in blood. Should I call the vet tomorrow? Will he be okay? Is there something else I can do? Thank you for all your help. He is currently sleeping on a perch outside his cage, holding up the foot with the injured toe.

Warning! JWR is a bad business and not consumer friendly

I find this highly disappointing on the part of Bird Talk. Thank you for the info though, as I was planning on ordering one of these when I move! I think a magazine with as much cred as Bird Talk should take pride in who they allow to advertise in their magazine. -
I keep thinking about Murphy. I am so sure he is out there looking for you. I give you all my luck!

Wow, that's amazing! Look at those beautiful eyes!

You're in my thoughts! I hope for a reunion!

Haha! I'll try to not have my grade lowered! I'm actually a corporate communications major, but I take psychology classes as my electives. I find it very interesting, and if I had a mind for math I'd have majored in animal psychology. I have a question...one of the issues that came up in class today is that infants of a certain age can't recognize themselves in a mirror, but once they get past a certain age suddenly they have that self awareness. Does anyone know if their greys can recognize themselves in the mirror?

Okay, thanks! I was just asking because I feel like I'm the type to write the numbers down and totally lose where I wrote them.

This month I've been taking a developmental psych class, and the past few chapters we went over, "The first two years" reminded me so much of what everyone on here has said of their greys. First it was language. How infants start off with "baby-babble" that parents don't understand. Some parents that are extremely diligent in listening to these noises can tell when the baby is hungry, when the baby needs to use the bathroom, when the baby wants to be held...etc Then the first words. How some words are used in general (like every animal could be a 'cat' even if it's a dog or a fish) and association between two words starts to develop. Some behaviors I found similar as well..behaviors saying how they don't want something, or interaction with certain items...I was astounded. I went to raise my hand to talk about the similarities I've read from Grey companion humans, but my professor was tired of me talking about birds in her class. I just thought I'd share! I'll continue to post and see if I find any other similarities.

If a potential companion human called you but did not have the band info, would you turn them away? It is possible one of them just never wrote it down.

That is so adorable! You should make a calendar..I'd love to have that pic up on my wall. -
Aw! Sorry for confusing the two. The eclectus is very cute. You have a lovely yard!
-
They're adorable! My last name is the Austrian/German word for Grey!

Hey Cupid, love the cages! I have a slightly off top question..I've seen a red bird in pics with your Aristotle. What type of bird is that?

How to teach a Grey to like a new type of toy...
Eshana replied to Morana's topic in The GREY Lounge
I think I'd introduce a wooden toy slowly, and let him come to it. Let it hang in the cage for a few weeks, and see if it sparks his interest. Has he shown any interest in chewing wood besides doors? His need to chew on doors may not be a wood issue. I know that my Senegal parrot will attack my phone on sight because I pay attention to my phone and not him! -
Hah! *My laptop *my gaming headphones *four pairs of underwear *my mattress *MY BANK ACCOUNT

As stated in the previous thread, the woman who had the AG previously has given the new owner two weeks, and if they don't "work out" the bird goes back. EDIT: A deposit was also left.
-
Aw Luvparrots, that's so sweet. I think I'm decided on a CAG. I move to the apartment the first week of September (if we don't have any issues with the current tenant), and I am hoping to put a deposit down somewhere as soon as I, you know, pay for furniture, birdie safe cookware, sexier clothes now that I'm going to be doing my own laundry (LOL!). If I don't have a deposit down by May, feel free to come after me guys!
-
Maybe it's the paranoid New Yorker in me, but I don't like the sound of leaving a deposit and only giving a two week trial. If things "don't work out" in the eyes of the previous owner, will she give you the deposit back? I suggest you let her know that it might take more than two weeks for the AG to adjust.
-
I think even two weeks is too soon to tell! My father is an animal behaviorist, and I've learned that even if it's a bird, a rat, a dog, a cat or even a turtle, they don't like change, and don't adjust to it easily! Give him some time! Talk to him through the cage bars, and let him tell you when it's the right time to interact with him. It could take a few days, it could take a few weeks, or it could even take a few months! I also wouldn't suggest letting the previous owner come over to visit, that can only confuse the bird more.

Is there a particular reason one would use a water bottle over a bowl, besides the fact that it's cleaner?

Is stainless steel worth it? Lets look over the reasons...
Eshana replied to kingsnake's topic in Cages & Homes
As someone with all black furniture and a mostly black wardrobe I've been dying to get black cages for my fids. The cages available to me at the time of purchase were all white, and they will stick out like a sore thumb when I move to my apartment in September. However, I think stainless steel is an option that sometimes can't be skipped. I'm considering getting a stainless steal cage for my future grey, and I've read that some birds, like the hyacinth macaw, can rip other cages to shreds!
