  1. Does anyone on here have a ringneck parakeet? My mother thinks they're adorable.
  2. I just got back! This was the cutest movie I've ever seen!
  3. Noise isn't an issue here. I see you have both a sun and a tiel. Do they speak with each other?
  4. The question still stands then. Why just call him a blue macaw? When I was little I loved learning about all different types of animals.
  5. As many of you know, I'm going to be getting a Grey sometime next year after I graduate. Well, as for right now I'd like to get a smaller bird for my Shelby to talk to. I know he gets lonely while I am not home, and I'd love to have another bird in the room to keep him company. I don't want another 'tiel, but perhaps another bird of similar size? Any suggestions would be great!
  6. My boyfriend and I are going to go see this tomorrow! I am confused as to why they call him a blue macaw and not a hyacinth. Do they feel the word is too hard for the youngin's?
  7. Welcome! I am also in the NY/NJ area and would like to recommend Fancy Feathers Aviary. I bought my 'tiel from there, and that is also where I plan to get my grey when the time comes.
  8. May I ask where you bought your harness from? I'd love to get one for Shelby so he can go outside.
  9. It's so wonderful how you and Cocoa interact! I myself find that animals interact with me on a more gentle level because they can sense I am sick.
  10. Oh my gosh you should go read my intro thread! I'm also a college student with a medical problem that prevents me from having kids! I originally said I was waiting a year, but I am now looking at the end of the year for my grey.
  11. Well, one can hope no one is putting toddlers in cages! My current pets already get spoiled to the pont where my mother complains about them being my children. I've posted about this before, but could you guys link me to good African Grey cages online? Specific links to ones people on here have bought and loved, that is.
  12. What an amazing story! To be honest, I completely believe that a Grey could learn to read, being that their intelligence level is potentially that of a five year old.
  13. Thank you Buttaxi! I'm not exactly going to use my future CAG to fill that void (although I hope he/she does), but it's nice to know that it works for you, as it may work for me.

    My new tiel.

Those mutations aren't sex linked, but if it's a male he will either be grey split to pearl or grey split to pearl whiteface. If female then it will be grey split to pied whiteface or just grey split to pied.
  15. FACT: A Bald Eagle can see small pray from thousands of feet in the air. Their eyesight is so good, that not only can they see the prey from thousands of feet in the air, but also for over three miles around. Fact or Fiction A swan will refuse to swim around large flocks of ducks.
  16. Well I also estimated high. I always estimate high when I'm saving for something. However, I will be searching ebay/craigslist closer to the time to find a cheaper one. Where did you get your cage and stand?

    My new tiel.

So cute! Do you know what his/her parents were? That's a good way of determining the sex of the 'tiel, depending on his/her mutation in some cases.
  18. I didn't account for food/vet bills because I have an account already for vet bills that I will obviously be adding more money to, and I figured the food expense would be adding some money to what I spend on fruit/veggies, plus around 40 dollars a month on pellets/treats/etc
  19. I've decided that before I reserve a CAG (I'm hoping to do so in November/December) I'm going to be slowly putting money away to make sure I can afford everything when the time comes. I've basically broken it down like this: 1. CAG: 1400 dollars 2. cage: I'm still not sure about this but I'm thinking around 500? 3. toys/supplies: 300 Please tell me if any of this is inaccurate. I will keep you updated on my savings progress!

    FruitBlend

hm...I wonder why certain birds show the dye in their droppings when others don't. Perhaps some birds are more sensitive to it than others? I suppose it just has to be used on a case by case basis. If you do find it compromises the droppings, however, I would not use it.

    FruitBlend

When I discussed this food with my vet, who has been working with birds for over 30 years, she said that any food/toys/etc that have dye in it should be avoided. And, like I said, a lot can be told from a birds droppings, and they can be compromised by the type of dye in the zupreem food.
  22. Congratulations on bringing him home! I'd love to see pictures when you feel comfortable posting them!
  23. Is there anything that's a bit more portable? I like the apples idea but I think I'd have a hard time getting it up the stairs and keeping it warm enough to emit a smell.

    FruitBlend

The breeder I got Shelby from was feeding him the fruitblend zupreem. I kept Shelby on it for a while, but I disliked the way it colored his droppings. Droppings tell a lot about birds, and I didn't want the color to compromise my being able to get him to the vet on time if he's sick. I have been weaning him off of the fruitblend onto the natural, also by Zupreem. He didn't like it at first (he hated the yellow banana pieces, and always left those over and the color of the natural is similar), but he's been eating more and more of the natural every day. Sure the colors look fun, but I myself don't like putting artificial coloring into my body, why give it to my bird? Even if the food does smell like fruit loops.
  25. My mother and brother both use liberal amounts of glade air spray. I'm worried that it's not good for the birds. Does anyone know of a safe air spray I could buy for them?
