He's adorable! I love how at this age his eyes look like a cobalt blue.

I've never heard of the "don't whistle first" thing for Greys, but I HAVE heard of it for 'tiels.
-
Welcome! I am new myself, learning about Grey's. I can't wait to see your baby and learn about what it's like to bring a new Grey home!
-
Thank you Lino. I have already read through pages of posts on here! With me having to rent much sooner than expected I will be strapped financially, so I'll probably still be getting the grey anywhere between december of this year and may of next year.

I read that birds that talk will repeat phrases said with a lot of emotion. According to that theory, saying "hello gorgious!" might not have as big an effect as "F#r$ IT!!!"
-
Ah, before birds rats were my first love. They are very spoiled! I'm sure, being that you have rats, you know how intelligent and funny they are.
-
Thank you everyone! Also, it seems like things like to go my way. Our tennant is moving out earlier than expected, so I may be moving in as soon as this summer.

Lino, my choice for getting both Shelby and the future grey as babies stems from my once inexperience with birds. My very first dog as a child was from a breeder, and she was an amazing, well behaved dog. So much so that we had her TGI certified. After that, once my father became a dog trainer and we were all more experienced with dogs, we started to adopt. My family currently has three dogs, all adopted. They each have problems, but the family is skilled enough to handle and understand these problems. The same goes for my rats, actually. I adopted Aristotle, and his late brother Asimov from a breeder in NJ. Now every single rat I get is a rescue. I feel that in the future, when I am out of apartments and live in a house (probably somewhere in Jersey or Brooklyn) then I will adopt any future birds, having had the experience from Shelby and the future Grey needed to handle a rescue case.

Such wonderful pics! You are very lucky that you have such a nice yard for Chili to play in!

I am into rock, my boyfriend is into folk metal, yet we both happily sit down on Tuesday nights to watch Glee. There isn't any shame in it! I think Chris Colfer is am amazing actor. Shelby is starting to bob his head slightly, but he mostly just sings along to music, and does his 'heart wings'.

That's basically how I am with Shelby. I take care of him in the morning, then when I get home from work/class he comes out until I go to sleep. On the weekend we spend a lot more time together. Also, I assume the 2-3 months I spend before I move into the apartment I'll be home a lot, looking for my first full time job. Apparently it's hard getting hired fresh out of College!

Dave, are you taking a jab at Staten Island? I'll have you know that when our garbage dump was open, you could see it from space! Also, I'm curious to learn from others on here that are single bird parents that have to work full time. How do they handle being out of the house 8-10 hours at a time?

So, I have a few more questions: 1. I know everything says that Grey's need to be in an area where they are the center of attention, and not in a bedroom. The person currently leasing the apartment will not be out until a few months after I graduate, and the Grey was going to be a graduation present to myself. Would it be okay if for 2-3 months the Grey is kept in my bedroom? I have the space for a large cage, and I spend all of my time in my bedroom. My television and computer are in it, and I even eat meals there, especially when I am studying for my classes! I think the only time I'm in any other part of my house is to talk with my parents or print a paper since I don't have a printer in my room. 2. I currently feed zupreem to my 'tiel, and he loves it. Is this, in the larger size, an okay diet for a Grey? It's available at every pet store I go to. If I have to order a food online I will (I order Harlan Teklad for my rats online) but I don't know if there's a 'better' food.

Judygram, from what I've read males don't keep pearls, so if you think your tiel is old enough she is probably female!
-
Wow 21 years! I hope Shelby stays with me that long!
-
He's a whitefaced pearl. Due to the fact that he is male, he will soon lose the pearls and his face will turn white.

As those who read my previous thread know, I joined this forum with the intent of finding out more about Greys. I currently have a sweet baby Cockatiel, however, and I'd love to say a bit about him, and introduce him to all of you! This is my four month old male white faced pearl cockatiel, Shelby Shelby is a passionate, intelligent bird. He is already spouting "Pretty Bird", because he knows he, ah, "got swagger". He refuses to let me listen to my beloved Bauhaus or the passionate lyrics of The Decemberists. Instead I must subject my ears to the like of Ke$ha and Lady Gaga, because it's the only music he will dance and sing to. He lives in a fairly large cage. It's not nearly as large as the one my seven rats live in (which I dare say is taller than I), but he likes it all the same. He spends his time courting my Cthulhu fanny pack, believing it to be the love of his life. Unfortunately I do not know the laws of marrying bird to elder god. I love to write, and often times I will read my writing to Shelby. Shelby loves to listen to his ninteen year old mother read to him. Can't you tell? Well, that's enough about Shelby. I hope you enjoyed this way-too-long post!

I think Ana Grey is gorgious. I've yet to see a breeder/aviary in the NYC area that have Timneh's (if anyone knows of one, I'd love to research them). I think they have a certain look to them that just sports majesty...I'm not quite sure what it is.
-
Is that a TAG tail? I've yet to see a good picture of one, and if so, I don't think they're any less brilliant than that of a CAG.
-
My boyfriend and I were going to go with Sydney (after a Jason segel character {because Shelby is such a funny character}) but then I read the name Shelby on a gender neutral name site and I fell in love! It's such a cute name, and I'm sure your Shelby will have just as big a personality!
-
I am just getting into parrots (I have a cockatiel) and I must say that I completely agree that 'tiels are parrots! Shelby has a big parrot personality packed into his tiny tiel body! I've watched videos of all types of parrots (grey's included) doing tricks on youtube, and many seem tense, like they really don't want to do what they're doing. Granted, I've also seen parrots doing tricks that are very into it, and have a lot of fun doing it.
-
The question to Talon is something I've been wondering as well! I've read so many different articles on the subject. My boyfriend has his heart set on a CAG but I'm still undecided.
-
Congratulations! I'm counting down the days until I'm prepared...

Your Shelby is really beautiful! I have a Shelby myself, but he's a 'tiel.
