  1. Humans use many different tools every day, and are very good at keeping them safe for later use. Dr Christian Rutz, team leader and one of the study's co-authors, said: "When you put a treasured pen in a pen holder, you know where it is, and can quickly find it again. It turns out that crows do exactly the same, sometimes storing their tools in tree holes or behind bark." 2. Bites are a hazard of taking care of any bird but when you have an entire flock the likelihood increases. Having an ability to remain stoic can be learned but trying to avoid reacting depends on how unexpected the bite is in my case. Here is an upper arm bite from a Molluccan upset over a new person entering his aviary with me. http://s201.photobucket.com/user/Firefly_mom/library/
  3. I would call your avian Veterinarian as the smell may indicate a bacterial infection. They may only need a fresh sample of his droppings to determine if that is the case. Great to hear he is an affectionate guy and you are getting along nicely.
  4. The cats at our house are no threat, mostly too old to care. How fortunate that all turned out safely for all of you. We have a small dog named Widget, small world.
  5. None of us think you are doing a poor job, I know you are stressed and so is he. Try to just breathe and relax, your state of mind is an open book to him. Being prey rather than predator makes a Grey very open to those around him, he has to watch those members of his flock to be aware of dangerous situations and will interpret your stress as an indicator of danger. Lots of mistings, lots of love and a huge dollop of patience is the best medicine right now. You need to heal as much as he does I can feel your pain in your words. If you look through the picture album in the post above this you will see quite a few plucked birds, most seem pretty happy anyway we just have to make sure they are warm enough in the Winter. They belong to the bald is beautiful club. We just have to love them and care for them no matter what. Some of these birds are mine and most are living in the Sanctuary having arrived that way.

  7. He is only trying to drive you safely away from Pat.
  8. Sounds like he has begun his training routine by trying to keep you guessing. A good Aloe vera juice spraying to soak him should help brighten that dingy feather issue.
  9. Good reminder for us all to always double check, before going outside, before leaving the house and just once more to be sure, thank you Chezron!
  10. That will be mostly fiber and seeds not much nutrition but you could use it in birdy bread depending on what you selected to juice.
  11. Rosemary-another herb that is good for you and your bird. It contains antioxidants and anti inflammatory compounds and has been found improve brain function and fight off free radical damage in the brain with Carnosic acid. Also supports eye health and is under study as an agent to fight Macular degeneration. Rosemary oil is also being investigated as an herbal approach to fighting tumors. More studies are looking into it being a tool against Type 2 Diabetes. It is a member of the mint family and is from the Mediterranean coastal region.
  12. Living with 4 CAG, 1 TAG, 1 E2, 3 Parakeets, 4 Cockatiels and now 1 Red lored Amazon who joined us after a dear friends passing.
  13. In your ears, nose and hands breathing in and hearing that heart beat so close and so very rapid. How amazing to live closely with these feathered beings.
  14. What is it with people thinking these birds need to eat the same junk food they do? We have gotten birds that eat Pizza, Steak, Cheese burgers, Chips, Pretzels, French fries and are as bad as kids trying to avoid green veggies and healthy alternatives. You can wean them over to a sound diet it just takes time and patience while you watch them throw most of it on the floor for a few years.
  15. We can have a quiet parade of celebration on this thread just for her big step forward. Being that she has history of being a Southern girl and a Swamp Queen witchy woman Mardi Gras seems like the right style!!
  16. Very good to think ahead of need, it would be best for Dorian if he could be with people he has already met and seems comfortable with but if that is not an option here is a link for Parrot rescue organizations in Canada. https://www.google.com/search?q=parrot+sanctuaries+Ontario+canada&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 I recommend calling or emailing and finding out as much about each of them as you can and find out who you are comfortable with.
  17. He looks like a happy soul, you will enjoy his antics as they are fun little guys with big personalities.
  18. Our flock enjoys tearing apart old paperback novels which I fan out and place through the bars for them.
  19. Keep on looking at the bright side Dave, funny but some truth there.
  20. That is funny when you have to think to realize you are tired. A Goffin would add a new dimension to the mix, they are the engineering type of Parrot-if it can be taken apart it will be done. They can focus much longer than you might envision.
  21. What fun she is having with her new confidence:o, go Gil girl.
  22. Where are you located and what made you interested in an Ekki? It would help to know what area you are in to suggest a breeder.
  23. Fred fred the Elanora or medium Sulfer Crested came to me coated in nicotine as well. He is our self mutilator and had been in several homes the one before he was rescued was a crack house. After all he has been through including 2 surgeries to close his chest he is a very sweet interactive and loveable bird who adapted very quickly to both his rescue home and then ours. Smart and they obviously have survival skills even in our sometimes twisted people world. So many sad stories out there and there are not enough spaces for all the birds looking for shelter just like dogs, cats, horses and people. There are birds with triumphant stories of success as well, thanks to all those who adopt recycled Parrots of any size and background and most of all those who run and support the good rescues and Sanctuaries.
