Thanks Dave for the information. I have discussed this with Kookies vet, since Kookie really likes shelled peanuts. He told me that even human grade shelled peanuts might carry a lot of germs or even micro-organisms that might cause worms and diseases to the bird. He suggested to heat the oven and bake the peanuts for a period of 5 to 10 minutes. This will kill most germs, but its important not to keep them longer so that they wouldnt over-roast or burn. Ive been doing that and Kookie seems to still like them after baking.

Hi Storm, nice to have you here. This forum is a lovely place and whats really special about it is that you get personal experience of all family members. They are sincere and they really care and you really feel their concern {Nature-00020095}

Hope shes better now. Is it possible to put a towel or a cussion under the ropes where she hangs so in case she falls, she would land safely...

Welcome back. Sunshine looks great...Nice to have you here to share experiences

Wow dave is a hottie... Hand lotion guess its ok as long as they are not licking it off your fingers.. Perfume: I kinda try not to come and play with Kookie right after I spray perfume... I guess even if its a long drive its better that you pick up your baby yourself, first to see which of them chooses you, then I think the trip with you would be easier on the bord than shipping... Good luck and please keep us posted on your baby's news when he comes home...

NBA Would rather smell a rose or perfume?

My bird is 4.5 years old. Ive had him for a month. I wanna buy the Aviator Harness but Im worried its too many new things for Kookie. What do you think? Im not sure Kookie likes the new things. Hes sometimes scared by my mobile or even the remote control. But little by little hes getting used to new stuff. Should I ry Harness now with everything new or wait a little longer?

Wow amazing...parrots are simply amazing...

Thanks a lot for your concern. Kookie has ben with me for a month. Day after day its better. I think with the small white blanket covering half of the cage iits better now. Still I am watching carefully to make sure hes alright and not scared. Since Im keeping the light on in the toilet next to his room its better. He likes his cage and many times he doesnt wanna get out cos hes enjoying his toys inside or sitting on his perch preening. I guess sometimes hes like a child who doesnt wanna sleep. The panting is less, especially that now I wait for him to get tierd on his playstand and until he starts grinding his beak to take him to sleep in the cage. Of course this means staying long after his bed time. I hope it will get better with time. He is getting used to the new surrounding and new people especially that he has spent 4.5 years with his previous family. Its all new to him and we are trying to bond. I just wandered if other members too find it difficult to put their grey to bed, and how can I make it better so thanks a lot for your support guys... {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

Tough one... My house Would you rather camp in the desert or on the snow? {Nature-00020095}

Hi Gary You just have to be patient. Your grey is in a new home and re-adjusting. Give her some time, if she is eating pellets, thats great. Nuts also provide calcium and nutrients. Try the veggis slowly and give her time. You might try the same thing more than once and maybe one time she will try it. My bird loves capsicum (the part with seeds also) in any color. He loves squash or zuccini, brocoli, carrots, also you can try bean sprouts. They love them and it provides protiens. Try also some fruits, less sugery ones are healthier (apples, grape, mangos, banana, pomgranate, cherries, strawberry...) Just be patient and allow your bird time to get used to you, the new home and new foods. Enough love and patience will do the job. {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

Hi Summer you have a very kind heart, like all the family here at the forum. Having a baby grey is a completely different experience than re-homing one. I have tried both and bothe have their joys and troubles. I guess since you have no rescue around, you can still get your baby and you will love him/her. In case in the future you are able to take another as a rescue...then you keep looking. In case not you can still help a bird needing rescue by trying to find a home among your friends and family or people you know. I helped my friend find a rescue bird here and Im glad knowing that the bird is in better hands now... {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

Post edited by: ranaz, at: 2009/03/24 10:01

How cute...I hope Kookie would do the same..Ive been trying to shift him to pellets but unless he is starved he wouldnt touch them...he is very arogant though and would refuse to eat...so its not as easy as yours...you are one lucky mom.. {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

I wish to hear some news update too. I discovered andrews videos by chance on youtube when I got my grey and was looking for training videos. It was through his videos and through his link that I got into this forum. I really wish that Tui has been found by nice people and I hope they are nice enough to return her back. I know nothing can replace her but i wish Andrew will get another bird, it would speed up his healing and fill part of the gap she left... {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

Oh thats lovely with your birds... I am following a sleep routine with Kookie, but when he is in his cage sometimes I feel he is really restless and when I go to check upon him I see he is really scared and he is holding to the bars on side of the cage. He seems to be panting and scared. I have changed his cage cover to a smaller and white color one, I keep one light on in the next room so its not totally dark and he wouldnt be scared. Sometimes he is just naughty and wants to test me and try to sleep on his play stand. Im not sure if its ok, I would sleep better knowing he is in his cage at night. Ive had him for a month now and its a learning journey with him... Thanks a lot Tycosmom. It would also be nice to see how other greys sleep s I hope more members would add their comments... {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}

Even when mine was clipped, she was able to fly but short distances. When clipping the wings, the vet explained that you want to cut them a little shorter that the bird could still fly (this is whats they're ment for) but not long distance, just short flies. I guess it maintains their self confidence. Also I have noticed that Kookie sometimes hangs on to the perch real tight with his feet, but flapps his wings so quick and strong...I guess its part of excercising rather than trying to fly...I guess most greys do that... {Nature-00020095}
