My grey was hand raised and had an open band on his leg.

Hi Doris.I wish you all the best with Layla.Plucking is a very hard thing to cope with.I am glad she has had tests to check out any physical reason, that is the first thing that should be done.Has she been plucking for a long time?. Give her regular baths, a lot of people use Allo vera juice to ensure the skin is not dry.Try keeping her beak busy with things like phone books to chew up, this will also help with the screaming.I would ignore totally any screaming,I believe turning your back and walking out the room without any talking or looking at the bird is a very good way to reduce screaming, also you must lavish the attention on her when she is quiet or making pleasant noise.I am a great believer in ignoring bad behaviour and praising good.Things wont improve over night. Also I not sure how long you have had her,she may still be getting used to her new home. This can take a while with greys.

Keep ignoring it and keep her entertained. It may well be nothing.Keeping my fingers crossed.

Kyle I forgot to say in my post earlier that my cousin went to sea at about 16 years old,on one of his first journey,he brought home a wild caught grey called Blue. That bird is still a very much loved and cherished part of his family 40 years later.Blue has been a constant companion and friend and is the most world savvy bird you could ever meet . So it can be done.

Post edited by: she, at: 2009/02/12 11:51

Darwin is adorable.I think that name is just right for a grey.

How is it determined what is best diet for Greys.
she replied to Janfromboone's topic in Health Room
It is funny you have mentioned steak.Charlie always goes mad for some if I am eating steak,he too holds a piece and really enjoys it.I wonder if it is due to a natural desire for protein,he also loves egg ,fish and cheese.I agree about the beak thought aswell.Maybe in the wild they do eat more carion than we think. -
Too cute for words Jim.

Fred is a nice looking grey.I hope all goes well at the vets.I think having the cage in the office is a good idea, perhaps have a stand in your living room so he can join you their and return to the cage for the night.
-
Yes sometimes they just do not know how to play.Usually curiosity gets the better of them if they see you enjoying the toys, this also works well with new food.My grey has what I call his mad half hour where he will bang his toys around like crazy and swing off his ring toy.He is then quite happy to sit and watch what is going on or doze.

Hi Kyle I am a bit undecided on this one.On one hand I think you would be great for a grey, having done the reserch and taking ownership seriousely. On the other hand you are a young man with a future ahead. This future may or may not include your long term girlfriend, how does she feel. What if you married and had children. You do not sound like a party animal and I am sure will want to settle down at some point in the future,ok this may not be for a while till your studies are over and you are ready. What about moving home and other normal life changes, and the abnormal ones. Can you honestley say you will stand by this grey for maybe the next 50 years. Ok most greys do change owners in their long life and do very well but some are not so fortunate and are passed around like a parcel, this is devistating to a animal as sensative as a grey.As I say I am undecided and the final decision is yours but please only get a grey if you are 100 percent sure it is for you.

Hi all. I have been spending my time between work and the hospital. My mum has a clot on her lung and they have also found a lump that needs investigating. Her breathing is still bad because of the clot but I am hoping that the treatment will soon start to work. She is still waiting to see a specialist over the lump,I am hoping it will be today,They will then decide what to do about it. I am sitting now waiting for my boiler to be repaired,I have no hot water. It is one thing after another. It has been making strange noises for a few weeks.I am hoping to get to the hospital on my way to work. The birds are doing ok concidering I have not been spending as much time with them,Charlie is on top of the cage talking away and Cracker has been out, caused chaos as always, that bird is more trouble than Charlie even though he is tiny.I love him though.I cant wait till it is warm enough to put him in the aviery of a day.He is flying everywhere even though I had him clipped a few months ago.He has grown a few feathers back and is away.I dont want to clip him again because It may still hinder his flight for the spring in the aviery.

Dan I too sometimes wonder if the world outside exists.I know I have missed the forum the last few weeks because my mum is ill but I have still grabbed a few mins hear and there.
-
Pat, as usual Tyco looks fantastic. Well done

Greys are very much their own bird.Casper is still getting aquainted with a new home and people. Some are very loving an welcome cuddles and scritches others are very much hands off birds. It will be a while before you see his true personality. My advise is to take things very slow and at his pace.Yes his diet needs changing but again this must be done slowley. Gradually reduce what he is eating now with more appropriate food.He may be tempted to try new things because of seing your other birds eat them.I too think it is brilliant you took on a mature grey who needed a new home.
-
Hi Danielle, Gandolf is gorgious and a lucky bird to find such a good home.I can see why you call him big bird.I am looking forward to hearing more from you and Gandolf.
-
Casper sounds like a great bird. It is a shame he came to you under such sad circumstances,I hope the ladys husband recovers fully. It sounds like he has found a good home.

Hi just relax and use the time you have learn all you can about greys and their care. I was jittery before I got my grey, but doing the homework helps. I was more jittery about the care aspect because I knew a grey would be a massive commitment and I was prepared for that.My grey is fine when I am in work and gets lots of out of cage time when I am home and at weekends.I also have an outside aviery for him to spend time in when the weather is fine. You are obviousely taking grey ownership serious as you are posting hear and to me thats a great start.Just be aware that a pet any pet is for life and greys live a very long time. Are you prepared to keep the grey through many life changes, marrage children home moves job changes,if the answer is yes to all of these thats brilliant.

congratulations. I am glad Indy traveled ok. I would let him have time to settle after the journome..He does appear to be making him self at home.
-
I have a grey and a cockatiel and I do feel it is good enrichment for them. They cant have any physical contact but do call and chat to each other.I am sure they are company for each other.
-
Sameera that is wonderfull news. Zahzu is a little hero. I also think you have done an outstanding job of nursing her and you are a most dedicated owner.

Hi I have every sympathy for you.I totally understand how you are finding things hard at the moment. We have another member on hear who is pregnant, it would be nice if you two could become friends and compare the ups and downs of parrot ownership and pregnancy.I doubt very much that the parrot could pass any thing to you or the baby but if it would help, a vet check and blood work may put your mind at rest.As others have said your hormones are everywhere right now, infact you probabley want to kill the next person who tells you that, such as hormones are.If you cant cope ,you cant cope, no shame in that. Have a talk with your husband and tell him how you feel, you may be surprised at his reaction,I am sure he will be more understanding than you think.Whatever, it has to be said.If you do rehome Mica just find a really good home and then enjoy the rest of the pregnancy. good luck and best wishes Sheila

If it is a feather she will sort it herself. It may be an idea to remove the coller for a bit under supervision to help her groom herself.
