Majestic birds

Thanks everyone. I feel so lucky to have seen such beauty and grace.
2. Erica I am so sorry. I know how you loved her and it is so hard, they are a family member. She had a fantastic life with you.
3. I cant say for sure if animals know right from wrong, I can without doubt say they know are emotions and react to them.I cant count the times I have been witness to this with many different types of animals. I would say of animals I have owned,a horse I had called Dulcie was probabley the most in tune with me with Charlie my grey being a very close second. Charlie does appear to know if he is doing wrong, he will look at me to see if I am watching him before he takes off for a forbiden perch or has a sly nip if I am not giving him attention. He will say ah ah when he is being naughty and a very exagerated GOOD BOOOOY when he is flying back to his cage.So maybe they do have a perseption of right and wrong. I love the idea of using some of supernannys methods for our parrots. I am right now deciding on using a naughty step or naughty perch.
4. Oh they do like the atenttion,my Charlie is right now sitting on me ,trying to get attention. Some times I have no option but to put him in the cage with toys and food treats so I can get thing done. I think it is good for them to understand that is is time to play on there own for a while.

6. I have always wondered what Charlie does while alone and like you imagined him just sitting waiting for me. Maybe he is ok after all.

Post edited by: she, at: 2009/01/19 13:16
7. She is beautifull.I am sure you will have great fun with her
8. I like both names.Such a sweet baby.I bet you are so excited.
9. Oh yes they understand what we say and do.Charlie amazes me with his ability to relate words and actions together.Make a piece of toast and its Hurry up, want some, come on. put a coat on and its bye bye.Come in and its hello.Clean the cage its who made that mess.I could go on and on.Perhaps I should not be amazed as I always knew greys were inteligent,I just did not know how inteligent
10. David, as you say this is a topic that has come up many times. At the end of the day it is a decision you must make on your own personal situation and beliefs.I believe it is without doubt best to leave a bird flighted, but I had to have my tiel clipped because not being the sharpest knife in the block he insisted on flying over to my grey,a disaster sure to happen. My grey is not clipped and yes it is hard work and at times frustrating having to retrieve him from places he is not allowed.I have taught him some flight comands,on the cage, come, off there, he is pretty good at them but only when he wants to.I have an outside aviery where the birds can spend time in the nice weather, one day the grey the next the tiel.So summer time is not a problem for me.By the time the nice weather is hear Cracker the tiel will be fully flighted, infact he can fly everywhere now and I am trying to decide to have him clipped again. The thing I will say is that if you do clip make sure an avian vet does it as I have heared some horror stories relating to bad clips. Good luck making your decision Sheila

Post edited by: she, at: 2009/01/19 12:13
11. Hi and welcome. I hope your dad is on the road to recovery. Charlie is a lucky bird having so many people love him so much You have boded with him which is great. I am sure these greys know who will care for them ,as you did so well . Good luck

13. Lisa and Janet it is so good to know it is not just me.
14. Hi and welcome. Has anything changed at all since the plucking started.I noticed it began over the holidays when most house holds are anything but normal.I dont put a tree up in the room where my grey is because I know it would upset him. Also People tend to have more visitors, stay up later, re decorate, any thing like this can be the cause .If you haven ot consuled an avian vetabout this problem I sugest it would be a good idea to rule out any sickness.Although most plucking is due to stress sometimes illness can be a cause.I also see that you have started taking the bird on walks, could this be stressing her. I would never give any medication to any animal without a vet prescribing it.I would not give benadryl My advise is to think of any changes in routine or environment and consult an avian vet.
15. Charlie is one smart bird for his age.
16. I have a fear of driving over bridges. I hate even the thought of it.I dont know why or what is is about it that scares me. I also hate spiders and if a mouse got in the house I would leave home.
17. Thats a good one. Greys really do have a sense of humor.
18. Sorry to hear you have been ill. Just munch on fruit veg, carrot battons that sort of thing. I know it is hard to do because my mum has taken it for her asthma.
