  1. WPT (World Parrot Trust) supported an expedition to the Central African Republic by Diana May of the University of Arizona. This resulted in some of the first sound scientific information about the Grey Parrot and its ecology; and a new WPT video about this species in captivity and in the wild is available. Maybe this would be what you are looking for;) Carolyn & Mika
  2. Welcome Lola & Larry, you said in your post "very demanding - spoiled rotten" well thats a line that probably each and every one of us could use here:evil:  So you certainly have come to the right place to hear about and ask questions about our very demanding and spoiled rotten greys (and we all love it that way";) Sit back and enjoy reading through the many valuable threads here and if you don't see what you are looking for just ask. Tofu?

Greys are also often said to have a greater need for calcium than other species. The truth is that they are more sensitive to inadequate levels of calcium in their bloodstream. The best sources of calcium are tofu, kale, turnip greens, and other green leafy vegetables. Calcium from spinach is poorly absorbed, but kale is an excellent source of absorbable calcium. 7. I am so sorry for your loss Yvette, my thoughts are with you and your family, and do hope you will be back with us soon. Carolyn & Mica
  8. I am so glad that Ice seems to be settling in well. Why dont you try to cut up what ever veg or fruit you have into small pieces and share them with him. If he sees you eating and enjoying them he is very likely to try them himself, make a big fuss over how goooood this is and while you are eating them start offering him one piece, just keep doing this I find these birds are very interested in things other people have, or are doing especially if they think they cant have it. Try to cut down on the junk food only because of the salt intake and fat, dont cut it right out now just try to cut back a bit for now. Ice has not been with you long, just give him a little more time to settle in and learn to trust he has only been with you a couple of days so far. Carolyn & Mika
  9. That is a great idea, I think Mika would love that. Just going to have to buy some coffee filters. Thanks for the idea Carolyn & Mika
  10. This is a picture of Mika's cup cake wrapper toy. Just take a string and wrap treats in a cup cake wrapper I use almonds - raisins - sunflower seeds, he pulls it up and destroys the wrapper to get to the treat. It keeps him busy and out of trouble - well busy any way:P Carolyn & Mika
  11. This is a picture of the cup cake wrapper toy- just tie a treat (I use almonds, raisins, or a sunflower seed) in each cup cake wrapper then tie it on a string, Mika pulls it up and destroys the wrapper to find the treat:laugh: Keeps him busy and out of trouble - well keeps him busy anyway. Carolyn & Mika
  12. Sounds like everything is going really well for you and George, keep up the good work;) Hope to see some pics when you have everythink settled Carolyn & mika
  13. The top of the toy is a coconut shell, I purchased it in a pet store, sometimes they are in the bird department sometimes in the hermit crab houses?? not sure why. They are very hard and he chews it but cant break it, but it is funny when he beaks it and it comes back to hit him in the head, (oh my the language then, and he can't talk yet - thank goodness) Happy toy making Carolyn & Mika
  14. Thought you would like to see what I was talking about with pinecones;) lol Just remember to bake them before you offer them to the birds:P PINECONES Pinecones make excellent toys for birds. Birds love to demolish them. itprovides good exercize for there very busy beaks and may provide a diversion for feather-pluckers. When collecting pinecones, ensure that they are not old, damp, mouldy or are growing moss. Ideally one should collect pinecones as soon as possible after they have fallen to the ground and before they have become wet from rain or snow. This is not always possible. Pinecones are also a favorite hiding spot for little beasties such as spiders and earwigs. It is not possible to "sterilize" pinecones but heating in an oven will kill moulds and the little critters and make themj safe for the birds to chew on. Pinecones can be heated in an oven for about 20 minutes at 225 degrees F.,then turn off the oven. The pinecones are left in the oven for approximately 2 hours to dry out. It is important not to exceed 225 degrees otherwise the pinecones will scorch and possibly catch fire. The seeds inside the cones are a special treat and are safe for the birds to eat. Carolyn & Mika
  15. This is a picture of the pine cone toy that Mika loves, its easy to make and very cheap. He destroys it and you can put it back together in minutes.

  22. Welcome moddo, there are many people here that have adopted older birds. Just sit back and read through some of the information here, and plase ask as many questions that you want. You have not said to much about your new friend do you have him or are you just thinking about getting him? If you have him, tell us a little about him/her. And of course we all love to see pictures.:woohoo: Carolyn & Mika
  23. Mika has decided to come up with his OWN set of rules: 1. If you like it, it's mine 2. If I can reach it, it's mine 3. If it's in my beak, it's mine 4. If I can take it from you, it's mine 5. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine 6. If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way 7. If I'am chewing something, all the pieces are mine 8. If it looks like mine, it's mine 9. If I saw it first it's mine 10. If you have something and you put it down it automatically becomes mine. These are "The Rules According to Mika" Carolyn & Mika:woohoo:
