Hello Martha, welcome here. Try eating stuff in front of her. Act like it's the best thing ever and don't let her have any. Make her watch until she just can't stand it anymore and then finally let her have some too. This technique will sometimes work because of their great curiosity and their desire to be part of the flock and do what the others in their group are doing. Safflower seeds and apples are a good start but she really needs to get some more nutritious foods in her diet. Try baked sweet potato and finger feed it to her warm. Most greys love sweet potato and it is very good for them! Good luck!

Baby talks for the first time this morning!
Lyric replied to luvmygrey's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Yea! Hurray for Baby! Perhaps he really did talk before but just chose not to until now! I bet you were excited. I hope the conversation continues... -
They do go through phases like this as they are maturing and I know it can be frustrating. One thing I'd recommend is trying distraction techniques. When he begins to misbehave get something he finds irresistable and trick him by changing his focus to something else. Get a few toys and have them handy just for this purpose. Distract him with something as you have him step up, and while he is still looking at whatever you are holding, whisk him away to his cage. My 4 month old TAG absolutely hates going back inside her cage- I have found she is totally obsessed with pine nuts or other nuts. In order to get her back inside I distract her by feeding her pine nuts while I get her back into the cage. When Lyric was going through one of his phases I discovered he was getting very territorial about the back of our sofa. He'd get there and be having so much fun that he'd get very aggressive whenever I had to get him back into his cage. I would have to wrap my hand in a towel and get him to step up on that- otherwise he'd bite hard enough to draw blood. I stopped letting him hang out there and kept him to places where I knew he'd be better behaved. After a time he eventually got better- they do mature and get better with time and patience. Hang in there and don't be a stranger on the forum, I was wondering where you'd been!

Cute cute cute! I'm going to guess Tuki is a boy- and I love the name too by the way. Do you get to see the baby often?

Hi Dave, sorry to hear that Alfie had to get clipped, but if it was mandatory what else could you do? I'm sure it was a hard decision for you to make. Maybe after being non-flighted for a period Alfie will decide to behave himself better once those flight feathers grow back. Tell him to hang in there!!

I was just thinking about you Berna, and the new baby and Elmo and wondering if the two of them are getting along with each other? Have you named the new baby?

Hi Doris, it's nice to see you back here with an update on Layla. It sounds like things are getting better for her already. Her plucking could have been contributed to by either the wing clip or the smoking- allowing her to regrow her flight feathers and getting her in a clean environment should really help a lot. I'm glad you are giving her time to adjust and learn to trust you.

I'm trying to find the cheapest and best way to get internet access at home. We don't have a home phone line because it was more cost effective to just have a family time plan and cell phones. So far the best deal I've seen is through Cricket- $40 per month for unlimited wireless broadband with free first month, and no contract to sign. The only thing is there is an actual limit of 5 or 10 GB (I can't remember which it was) then they can "slow" your service down for the rest of the month. I don't quite understand all that. If I'm just using it for checking e-mail and surfing the web (including getting on this forum) then how many GB would I be using? Does anyone else out there have Cricket's plan and do you recommend it? If not, what do you suggest? I've thought of going the whole cable/high speed internet route but it would cost a lot more than $40. With just normal internet usage do you think I would go over their limit each month?

You can also try having some small foot toys handy to give Indy to distract him from biting on you. For instance, clean popsicle sticks, small nuts, plastic lids to water bottles or actual toys. When he gets beaky give him something to chew on besides you and I think this will probably help- they like to chew a lot!

Dorian will be less clumsy and less accident prone once you let him learn how to fly. It will increase his confidence, give him good exercise, and give him pleasure. I'm not sure why you don't think he can fly in your environment- he should adapt just fine once he figures out the basics of how to fly and land properly. If you don't have to worry about open doors that's a wonderful thing too and one less worry about letting him fly. I say let him go for it!

Hazel is adorable. I bet you must be having so much fun with her- while they are little and learning everything and wanting all your love is such a fun time. I hope you enjoy your time with her.

Great video of Rumi singing- that is really sweet- both the amazons seem to be having so much fun too. I'm glad you shared that with us.

Hi Tonia, welcome here! That is a great picture of Baby, thanks for sharing him with us.

My TAGs are flighted too. It takes some patience to deal with sometimes, for example they may decide they like to hang out on your lamp and chew it- you have to take them off every time they land there and put them back where you want them to be. You must always be very watchful of where they are and what they are doing. But, the inconveniences of having them flighted are far outweighed by the joy flying gives them. It makes them happier healthier birds, more confident and I believe less likely to feather pluck. Birds were made to fly.

Beautiful family you've got- I really love Kaya. I agree with Judy about the cage size- get a larger cage because the bird will spend some time inside, any time you are both gone from home, on vacation, whatever. The bird should be comfortable in his home.

FairY I was wondering the same thing- Come on... we're anxious to see the results!! Please?

What type of games do you play with your grey?
Lyric replied to RoadSpawn's topic in The GREY Lounge
Jane08, that's a cute video of your grey playing ball. I play peek-a-boo and also the "I'm gonna get your ___" game. You say "I'm gonna get your beak!" and then touch the bird's beak- then move on to other body parts. This gets Lyric a little wound up and by the end of it he's trying to get me before I can touch him- he hates it when I touch his tail. I started playing this game with him to get him more used to being touched in places he may not like. -
I'm glad to hear things are getting better and that everything was good with the vet check. Edison may have just decided that you are his mate, and looks upon C as competition for your affection. Hopefully things will continue to improve between them!
