You can buy them at most lighting store or home depot places like that you can buy the tube kind or there are also full spectrum bulbs some pet stores carry them also. I don't use the full spectrum lights but I do try to get my birds into some natural light at least twice a week for 15 minutes or so. if you live some where its not to cold you can get a cage to put outside even in the winter if its not freezinf you can put them in a sheltered area where some natural light comes in I have a mud room that has screens instead of windows and even in the winter I will put a space heater out there so the birds are sheltered and not to cold it doesn't take allot of light for them to get enough 15 minutes 2 or 3 times a week is plenty.

Oh Summer he's a beautiful bird his feathers are just gorgous how is he doing at settling in does he come out of the tiny cage at all? will he step up for you ar can you give him scritches? Thats the same siz cage My Tyco was in for the first 4 years of her life only she was locked in and neglected with no toys or anything When I got her I bought her the biggest cage I could find and they say that you should set the cage up and then slowly introduce them to it well Tyco had other plans she went into her new cage on her own within 8 hours of setting it up I set it up while she was sleeping so when I uncovered her in the morning it was their and then I proceeded to make some new toys out of some old toys that where around the house then I put some of her favorite foods in the new cage all while she watched and as soon as I put the food in the new cage she went in and ate. that night she slepted in her new cage and I took her old one away. it was so easy she loves her cage so much and uses every bit of it and I'm sure your baby will also. I don't understand why people would buy a big beautiful bird and then buy a cge that isn't apropriate for it. can't they see that a cage like that is way to small for that size of a bird. This is the cage I got for Tyco. I bought it brand new from a bifd rescue but they keep all their birds in foster homes and someone donated this cage but it was to big to move from house to house because it doesn't come apart so they sold it to me for 100. and the best part was that the money went back into the rescue to help other birds. Check out the bird rescues in your area mabie you can get a good deal on a cage also.

Tycos_mom replied to Tycos_mom's topic in The GREY Lounge
Iam pretty happy about the news also thanks for all your coment shady is such a speicial little bird She sure does like to cuddle and when she's getting cuddles and pets she grinds he beak and just snuggles in. She doesn't even care if I flip her on her back as long as I don't stop petting her. She would rather cuddle than play or eat or anything its nice to have such a sweet baby. She gurges already for me also yuk:laugh: -

Looks like a grey't play stand for a base you'll have to add some toys mabie a boing hanging from the ceiling above it and a swing just kidding the play stand looks grey't
-
No way there is a very good chance that your 3 yr old grey will kill or hurt that baby very badly. That cage is the birds home and sancuary and he will not allow tresoasser on his property without defending it. if your going to get a baby Grey get him his own cage as well.

I Have the most spoilt baby in the world mabie even the universe she just got the biggest new cage I could find short of buying an aviary and it shine gold so she lives in a golden house that has all kinds of fun stuff in it from swings, boings, foot toys, and foraging toys, Shes only 11 weeks old and still being hand fed but at least when she's old enough she'll have everything she needs to have all the fun she could ever want. her cage is so big she could probubly even fly in it:laugh:

Shady does that finger grabbing regurg thing also and shes only 11 weeks old she's been doing that for a couple weeks now.

Iknow what you mean Judy they are just to cute its a natural thing to want to pick them up and squeeeeeze them and kiss them and jus love on them How could anyone not just love thise cute little birdie faces whith all those cute little paint brush feathers all over them sooo sweeet. By the time you get that little baby home you are going to be so in love with him your not going to want to put him down. you must totally feel like an expectant mother all over again LOL Thats how I felt with my Green Cheeked conure I bought him the day he hatched and waited til he was weaned. His breeder lived in Alberta and I live in British Columbia So Sprout had to be shipped to me. I had a wonderful breeder that updated me all the time when I finally got Sprout home I was totally smitten he was the sweetest little guy and had already learned how to say step up so everytime I put him in his cage he would say step up stepup step up It was very hard not to let him stepup he was just to cute.I know your going to be just as smitten with your baby when you get him.

Thats a very high compliment your grey is paying you she/he loves you very much.

All my birds have one of those bells and Dave is right like I said the only hanging toys Tyco plays with is her bell and her boing all other toys have to be foot toys. She is very protective over that bell and if I ring it or touch it when shes not in her cage she comes running right now to see whos touching her bell.LOL Gizmo and Fergie also love their bells. Shady has one that I just bought to put in his new cage he hasn't quite figured out how to get around that huge new cage of his but I'm sure when he does and finds that bell he will love it also. They aren't expensive only about 5 dollars but worth every penny.

hi I was just wondering what happened at the vet today.
-
Well I've always heard that you should buy the biggest cage you can afford well for the price I got that cage for how could I go wrong. 300. including tax I was going to buy the one one size smaller but then I looked at the one I got and it was so much bigger and only 35.00 more so I said for 35.00 he might as well have they biggest cage there is.

What a sweetheart a great big bird in a little bird body I shoud try that with my Cockateils I always cut it off the cob for them I now wondering if I have too That si the cutest thing I've ever seen :woohoo:
-
Give her time and she will do all things. When I first got Tyco 2 years ago she didn't know how todo anything she was locked in a cockateil size cage for 4 years she is 6 years old now and even though she still won't play with hanging toys except her boing and her bell she now loves foot toys and readily destroys and has a geat time with them. I bought her one the other day at walmart in the baby section that she just thinks is the best. when you move the handles back and forth it laighs, goes boing, says hello, and I love you she loves to smash it and throw it and its acrylic so she can't break it it also has a rattle in its bottom. we call it her bug a boo she says bug a boo bug a boo when she drops it and wants me to pick it up for her
-
Ithink its also a good idea I offer all my birds a little formula once in awhile I always have it in the house because of my Green cheeked conure. Tyco bit his beak off just after I got Tyco right through the cage bars. It never grew back much and even though he has learned how to eat on his own again I like to make sure he's getting enough so I give him 1 hand feeding a day. When I had to feed him the other birds got interested and will now ask when they want some formula so I give them a little Tyco won't take it from a shringe but she does like it from a spoon I guess it all depends on how they where fed as babies.
-
I think that might be one way to help her learn to play with toys try some simple foraging toys with what she usually eats in them so that way if she's hungry she will have to figure out how to get the food show her a few times where and how to get the food and the let her go for it try someting simple first like string a few small margerine cups together and then in every second cup put some food and to get it she has to pull the lid off. Just a suggestion it might help her to start enjoying toys.
-
No fuss at all she was haveing so much fun at the time I don't think she even noticed that I did it she just kept on playing.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/05/18 07:11
