  1. Lidia, This was a great captioned photo journey to the final object of his ultimate desires!! Karma + for you miss pictorial story teller!! {Communicate-00020110}
  2. Hi Bekkie, That scene coming in to your home would send lightening bolts through you! In looking at the photo, that string or piece of leather attaching to the ball looks too short to wrap around your greys leg easily. Is it just the angle of the camera that makes it look so short? If the cord really is that short, then it would seem that any length over an inch or so could be very dangerous to any Parrot. Thank god he didn't chew his leg off!!!
  3. Hi Josh, Rust is Toxic to Birds, animals, humans etc if ingested. If the rust spot you are referring to is more of a rust stain bleeding through, rather tan an actual rusted piece of bare metal. You may be ok, but you should test it by tapping on it with a small hammer lightly to see if the outside coating caves in or breaks away. If it does, you should not use this cage. Your Parrot would pick at it and ingest it. Also, barring having the cage sandblasted and then re-powder coated again, there is no alternative. Any other paint product would be poison to your Parrot.
  4. Thanks Judy - Yes, I had him toweled, but in using my other hand to assist Kim in getting a look at his wing and feathers, He got it good a couple of times....I assure you next time I will have one eye on the wing and the other on the bare hand ;-) Lidia - LOL - That was a club I really did not want to join, but knew it was inevitable :-) You words regarding the coagulation are holding true and Jake is eating and playing with his toy on and off. One thought has occurred to me though, in the wild, birds have no one but themselves and blood coagulation to count on for surviving through this. It would seem that, this type of thing would happen more often as they flap off from an animal of prey or through a scraggly tree. You would think that if this was such a life threatening ordeal, that we would observe dead birds all the time.... I do know, everything I read online in a 60 second of mad dash web searching. Said to pull the rest of the feather from the socket ensuring you got the ball at the base with it.
  5. Hi Talon - Thanks for the link! I had styptic ready, needle nose pliers etc. It turned out that there is nothing to get a hold of and it appears to have stopped. Just now he is playing with one of his toys! So we will keep a close eye on him. Judy - Wounds are ok and bleeding stopped on my side :-) Now I'm wondering.....If that was a Grey, I would be missing at least half of two fingers and a large piece of flesh out of the back of my hand. :ohmy: Hopefully, once we get to bring Dayo home, we will get him used to being handled, wings manually folded out while being held etc. But, I am not certain for example, how you would avoid getting a bad bite when you pull a blood feather which would obviously inflect pain?<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/14 21:32
  6. Hi and Welcome!! I have read that they stop eating as much to lose weight when they are going to fledge to make flight easier. This may be what's going on, but there are many members here with years of experience that will help you out. 7. Thanks for the great feedback on the sleeping patterns for your individual Greys. It appears each develops their own personal sleeping and napping habits to fit the individual families schedule :-)
  8. Hi Geoff, Mirek is very intelligent. Notice how he is scrutinizing the training book already and devising methods a head of time to counteract your methods ;-) The towel photo is a gem, it looks like they like to find a nice enclosed place that they think makes them invisible. Such as a child hiding under the blankets when sleeping :-) Thanks for sharing all these great snapshots in time of his progress!!
  9. Hi Lidia, :woohoo: How funny, click...click night-night time. The ways these Grey master communications amazes me everytime I read a post!! I have a question now. I read everywhere that they need a minimum of 10 to 12 hours of sleep everyday or they get cranky. Is this true? Also, it seems that late hours in to the night are ok for them too. It seems to me, that their circadian rhythm is not tied as strongly in captivity to the daylight, as it is in the wild. Opinions?<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/13 13:37
  10. Karma for Lidia for using her Karma :-)
  11. Hi Pallywalnut, It sounds like you are having a great time with your new Baby "Rocky" and he is living up to his name :-) He sounds like he may end up wanting to be a cuddler by the way you describe he always wants to climb up on you. Does he also want you to touch and scratch him? As others have already said, something on the bottom to cushion his falls is a must. The updates are great. I really enjoy reading the adventures of Rocky and yourself!!
  12. Yes, Judy you do, now I know you and my wife are in Kahoots :-)
  13. We named our baby grey "Dayo", which is an African dialect that means "Joy Arrives". Our theory was that since his origins are from Africa, we should find an appropriate name in one of it's languages that fits :-) Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/12 16:48<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/12 16:50
  14. Hi Geoff, Well if babies don't anything wrong, that gentle kiss he gave me on the soft webbing between the thumb and index finger sure did hurt :-) I understand they don't know that they are doing anything wrong, but that's why we need to gently shake our hand side to side or push back gently to let them know something isn't right. But, I do realize that is entirely different than a 2 year old that Bites you because he knows it hurts and does it anyway :-( As I learn little tidbits, I will pass them on, but right now, I still crawling while the rest of you are running. You know I will throw thoughts out!!! :-)
  15. Talon that was a great intro for this!!! :laugh: Now, I have definately made my mind up, that I will not be posting my photo!! You would probably turn me into a Pepe long stockins, since I see you made CD a Polly Anna :silly: You are all having too much fun with this!! {Emotions-000200C6}
  16. Mirek sounds like he's trying to learn to communicate, which in my opinion is just another example of how intelligent these Grey's are! :-) I'm certain I will go through the same confusion you are in trying to understand what it is that they are trying to communicate. It all just sound so wonderful though!! I'll bet you laugh aloud sometimes :laugh:
  17. hveusnthbrige wrote: Hi Geoff - I haven't even noticed a puff of smoke so far. :-) I do see both of your methods of discipline, correction, behavior modifications of whatever each person calls it. It's all resulting in behaviour modification as the desired outcome (hopefully). I personally just see an interesting debate going on here so far. It is valuable information I can apply and watch as my baby Dayo responds to different methods of correcting him. I appreciate both of your and Lidia's view and comments.:laugh:<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/11 21:48
  18. Hi Geoff, I am glad to see you posting these regular entries on the phases Mirek is going through. Then seeing the replies from other Forum members that have experienced the same thing and what they did. This is going to be highly valuable to me when we get to bring our baby Dayo Home :-) Does mirek also make a type of air pushing sound like a human baby does? It's hard to explain the sound, but I'm sure some of the Ladies here that have had babies would know :-) Keep the updates coming!!!
  19. Hi Paullywalnuts, That is one fine looking baby :-) Have you been weighinh him daily, just out of curiousity? Sounds like you are a normal, worried parent
  20. Amanda, Sorry I forgot to answer your digital scale question. You can search the internet for digital scales and compare prices. The one I just purchased for around 60.00 is this model: http://www.toplinedigitalscales.com/catalog.php?action=124&item_id=114 Hope this helps you.
  21. Hi Amanda and welcome to the Forum. It sounds like you are asking and doing all the right things. The very knowledgable members here that will be able to give you the right advice. You came to the right place :-) The photo in your avatar is great, maybe when the dust settles you could post some photo'd of your baby!!<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/11 14:25
  22. Talon wrote: Thanks Talon, thats really good to hear!! I am going to take 2 weeks vacation then when we get to bring Dayo home!! :-) It is certainly good to hear how adaptive to change they are through your and other experiences. You know, you read so much on the internet that just seems to be the biased opinion of perhaps one professional, that has a myopic view based soley on their experience. It is such a great feeling to know I can post on this Forum and get the experiences of all the users here, that live with your Greys day in and day out. That help new owners, such as myself get a "Balanced" view of the general Grey's behavior by "Merging" all the information into a provided into workable solution. Thanks to all of you!! {Feel-good-000200BB}<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/10 13:51
  23. I'm so happy for you Paullywalnuts! It sounds like you and your new Grey are adjusting well to each other and having a good start! :-) Have you been considering names yet? I will look forward to seeing the Photo's once you get your Camera batteries. You certainly came to the right forum to get all the expert advise as your questions come up.<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/10 13:32
  24. Hello Mandiskem and Welcome. It's good to have you join this Forum. I can not imagine your situation, but hopefully your new Grey will bring more joy to your life and go for rdies with You :-) If or when you could, it would be great to see some photos of Buddy.
  25. Beccy gives good advice. Dayo, our present baby CAG at the Breeders picked us :-) When we go, the others stand back and he/she walks out!!
