1. Hi Jewels and welcome to the Forum! :-) You are out of my experience level, my CAG is only 11 Weeks old and still at the Breeders where I visit regularly. The are many members here with several years of experience that will give you some very good answers shortly.
2. Hi Shahin, Welcome to the Forum! :-) Bekky is giving good advise. Could you perhaps give us a little more information to work with? Such as, does he step up, does he bite, does let you in the Cage without a fight etc.? This will help all of us give a more specific answer.
3. Lidia wrote: Hi Lidia! I do believe that the Parrot World had transmitted a heads up to ALL to Bite DanmcQ on sight :-) Actually, it is probably my own stupidity, of not being prepared for the "Possiblity" of it happening... Your right, Dayo did not bite, it was just that one "Loner from Hell" that I should have just left a lone. The other 5 baby CAG's were just fine :-)
4. Thanks for all your Bite experiences folks! These are all great stories, a couple of which almost most made me spit coffee all over my PC Screen :-) I have to watch for those sudden punch lines in some of your stories :woohoo: If I could ask you a favor? Could you all carry your stories one step further and tell us what you do to avoid being a "Bite Me" target? Example: Your Greys body language, growling or perhaps a gesture you may be making that you realize "Asks" them to bite you or perhaps you are wearing a Red shirt and your Grey goes into "Attack" mode. I think if we can articulate this in a good fashion, all of us can learn many examples to watch for and be aware of :-) Thank you all for sharing your bite experiences !!! No more "Flash Back" lies ok....that was one of the instances that almost made me destroy my PC Screen....I think that was intentional:side: Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/16 18:28

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/16 18:33
5. Judy, Having a Parrot large enough next to your face or ear that can scar you for life, doesn't scare you? It does me, Dayo kept wanting to climb up and I would not let him. I know your very tame, but what if they lose balance slip and grab the closest thing to them clamping down as hard as they can to stop themselves from falling? :ohmy: I would love to trust Dayo that much, but the risks and damage possible are something I would not be willing to take. Not after personally experiencing what a "Baby" CAG can do today It pierced both times it attacked, much to my surprise. I had my hand balled up tight so there would not be any "Loose" flesh. That powerful beak still still dug in leaving wounds from both the top and bottom beaks both times it bit me :blink: I know it's a personal thing, but not one for me :-)
6. Talon - Yes, you could by-pass the 12 step, but since you are wearing your earrings again. You can be an honorary speaker at the next meeting.:laugh: Me wife owned horses over the years and it ALL HURTS extremely bad when being delivered by a 1000 pound dynamo with neck muscles as big in diameter as (Ahem) most of our waist's, jaw muscles the size of a Soft Baseball and back legs that with a single kick can kill you with one good kick to the sternum or head.:ohmy: Of course, those can be avoided, such as the horse Nose Slap to yours, by using a restraining strap to keep that head from coming up. Guess I got a little off topic here talking Horses. But the Biting was in it! :-)
7. Hi All, Since I have a track record of late, at receiving Bites while completely minding my own business.:evil: I have been asked to be the CEO of a new Start-Up called "The Parrot Bite Me Club". :woohoo: So as most of you have probably read already, of my expert level mastery of consistently receiving Bites Daily, lets hear your adventures in biting!! {Feel-bad-00020080}

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/16 03:52
8. Talon - LOL ..... I'm not sure I want to be known as the "The Parrot Bite Me Club" founder due to my terrible track record of late, but ok :woohoo: Ok, I will, but as CEO of it, I no longer need to do the "Receiving" anymore. It will be delegated to "Support Staff" :evil:
9. I Thought someone might think the Club Name was laughable :-) Yes, the Breeders Husband is in a Band, in fact the reason I didn't visit yesterday as usual, was because they played at a concert down south in Los Angeles last night. The Greys are already making some interesting noises...hmmm, I wonder where they get those from ;-)
10. Dayo is coming a long well at the Breeders. When I walked in, it wasn't 1 minute and he was at the front of the cage wanting out. When the Breeder opened the door, he climbed on to it and step up for me. The Breeder wasn't certain it was him , so she checked the Band it it in fact was him. :-) They are starting to fly down from around 3 feet high now with a little encouragement and are more exploratory than ever. After I had been there about 1 and a half hours playing with most the Babies, one of them decided to nail the back oh my hand when it got close and latched on. So I pushed into the bite and it released. Then as I had slowly pulled back my hand to my side, it Flew straight over to the same hand and landed Beak down on the back of my hand in perfect form :-) and REALLY latched on leaving both a bottom and top beak pentration. The Breeder was shocked that it had attacked, as they are still so young. But, this Grey has always been a loner and stand-offish. Maybe it doesn't like me or just humans in general. It has always stayed by itself while the others play, run around and expierment. So, now thats two days in a row of being bitten by different Parrots. I guess this officially makes me a proud member of the Bite Me Club ;-) With all that said, here's some Pic's from todays visit. 11. Thanks for the update Geoff. It sounds like you are having loads of fun and from the pictures, I see your new baby is too!! :laugh:
12. I had a similar experience with a Peach Front Conure I purchased from a breeder that was completely wild. After a year of trying to get him to even trust my hand next to his cage, I started searching for solutions again, which the books and posts on the web did not reveal a solution that worked for "Jake". I finally found this website and followed exactly what it promulgated and had him stepping up the same day.. http://www.thebirdwhisperer.com/ I hope this helps in your situation!!

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/15 16:53
13. Well, being completely out in the open, with no place to call home to feel safe in may be a big part of the problem. If you have a Cage, you should keep him in it, which would be his home and place of safety. To gain his trust, you will need to get him into a small room that you can at least get closer to him and start making him understand your not going to hurt him. You also need to start out with getting him on to your hand..carefully so he knows that it is safe and no harm will befall him. This is not going to be a 2 or 3 day fix. It is going to take time, to get the trust and relationship going. I am certain others with first hand experience in your circumstance will chime in here pretty soon. Just hang in there, it will be worth it :-)
14. Congratulations!!! Can't wait to see you become MORE active now on the Forum..... {Feel-good-00020069}
15. How exciting for You!! Can't wait to start seeing those photos!
16. It's funny how Words take on new meanings due to advertising these days. Corona, in my area of engineering is the ionization of the atmosphere around high voltage, which in most cases cannot be seen, except in the dark or Fog. You can sure feel it though if you get in to the Corona field itself and become the conductor to ground path :woohoo:
17. When you say, you get near him and he jumps, does that mean he is outside the cage on a perch?
18. Your Cage doesn't have doors that swing out to access the feeding bowls? Really, his food and water should be changed daily. It is cool to hear that he's making sounds :-)
19. Well, that fills in the 4 month time gap. During the 2 months you were gone, do you feel comfortable that he was taken care of by someone that is familiar with Greys? It seems you just started getting to know each other and then had to leave. This stopped that "Bonding" and perhaps now has placed a feeling of abandonment and distrust. Hopefully, with time, patience and consistency in your daily scheduled time with him, it will start the bonding process that never fully came to fruition.
20. Hi Falconeer, I was reading your post from 3/07 when you first brought your Grey Home. It seemed in that thread, that you were making progress in gaining his trust, with him even following you around the house and coming to your bedroom. Now, 4 Months later, it sounds like all that progress has changed. Has anything happened that you can think back to that he started showing a big change in his attitude towards you?
21. If you use gloves, you should get some that look like the huge Gloves Welders use that go up to the mid forearm. I have seen pictures of the Poachers in Africa using heavy duty gloves like that when handling the Greys to get them in the Cages. Anything else would be too then to stop that powerful beak, but it would slow it down a little and lessen the wound. Of course I am just being outlandish, no one would use gloves like that, other than poachers or Hawk handlers.....Judy, don't do it.....I was just teasing ;-)

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/15 04:51
22. Thanks Talon, I'm glad I could finally share something that actually was helpful to someone. Just wait until I'm 74 and had my Grey for 20 years. Then I should have some data and facts for people on the Topic of Greys :-) Right now, the only data I have is OUCH, don't let your Bird bite you when they think their very life is being threatened!! :woohoo:
23. Your both welcome! :-) Josh - Just due the tap test first to see if it's really rotten under the apparent stain. If not, then your probably ok for a while as long as you keep it dry. But, if it's worse than that, getting it sandblasted and powder coated again would probably cost you the same as a new Cage. Judy - When you say Apron, do you mean the seed guard? If so, that's not an area your Grey could get to to pick at. But, for cosmetic purposes, you probably could order that part from the Cage manufacturer.
24. Hi Talon, Thanks for the advanced warning. :-) I tried to use a glove the first time I was trying to train Jake to step up. He hated the glove more than my hand and attacked it with a fury I have not seen since. Well, except for the medical exam today ;-) I took the glove off and he stepped up for me with just a mild to hard bite on my hand, versus the full out beak attack with razor blades inserted with the Glove on :blink:

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2007/07/15 04:18
