hahahaha, goo ones Dave and Luvparrots!! Ok, heres some "How the fight started".... ************************************************************ My wife walked into the den & asked "What's on the TV?" I replied "Dust". And that's how the fight started..... ************************************************************ A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, 'I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.' The husband replies, 'Your eyesight's damn near perfect.'And that's how the fight started..... ************************************************************ My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, 'I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 200 in about 3 seconds. ' I bought her a scale. And that's how the fight started..... ****** ****************************************************** I asked my wife, 'Where do you want to go for our anniversary?'It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation.'Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!' she said.So I suggested, 'How about the kitchen?' And that's when the fight started.... ************************************************************ My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed, turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have sex?''No,' she answered. I then said, 'Is that your final answer?'She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying 'Yes.' So I said, 'Then I'd like to phone a friend.' And that's when the fight started.... ************************************************************ When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive. So, I took her to a gas station. And that's when the fight started..... ************************************************************ I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95. Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95. I told her the beer would make her look better at night than the cold cream. And that's when the fight started..... ************************************************************ My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'D o you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife. 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And that's when the fight started..... ************************************************************** I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn't believe it. He was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!!!' So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?' And that's when the fight started..... ************************************************************ I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. 'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.' He said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?' 'Nah, she can order for herself.' And that's when the fight started.....

Welcome lhendrie1! It's GreYt having you and your new CAG here. It sounds like you are off to a good start with her, just needs a liitle more time to get used to the new home and people. Looking forward to hearing more from you. :-)
-
Welcome Delta and Flock!! It's GreYt having you here. Your flock of adoptions is truly heart warming to see and hear about. Solo sounds like the mother hen and ensures all get with the program and helps them there. Looking forward to hearing more of your flock and how your dealing with your Tag Ivy's handicap. Ivy doesn't seem to know one exists. :-)

I love this story that was 2 1/2 years in the making. Thanks for posting it and with the photo evidence of when you got him and after you nursed him back to being a full fledged bird once again that is happy and flighted. Karma to you Dave!! :-)

GreYt photos and video of Ecko flying, he is doing GreYt!! Thanks for sharing these. :-) Pat - Thaks for the photos of Adaya and Tyco, they are two beautiful bids. I can't believe how fast they grow, even though I watch it happen atleast two times a year, it is always awe inspiring. :-)

Judy - As you know, Dave just states the facts and only the facts. :-) I can not join this club either, obviously since I am the founding father of the Parrot Bite Me Club. I can only say some are born "Bad to the Bone" will bite when 12 weeks old and in my opinion are prime candidates for being breeder. I remember being attacked by a 12 week old Grey that literally flew from the floor 6 feet away to attack and place a good blood drawing bite on me. That grey would also growl at the breeders and stay in the back of the brooder and cage when approached while all the other baby greys would come running up. I don't know, maybe that poor baby grey was just slapped too many times by his bad Grey parents before being removed from the nest when he was 3 weeks old. ;-) I do have to say though, my wild caught (suspected) conure is a biting fool and even scares Dayo when he starts into the protection mode of some intruder to his cage top or area when out, unless your invited by his little come and talk to me look. :-)

Good luck at the vet. Looking forward to hearing how it went. :-)

You will need to continue misting him in his cage where he can not escape from you. He will soon stop the thrashing around and just sit and be pissed off at you while you wet him down. Let him bite the mister to vent a little then mist some more and let im bite it again. :-) Most Greys do not like a shower or a misting, but it is necessary. Mine is the same way, however he will get into a pie pan I place on the counter top and splash around and get his belly wet. But, they need a god misting all over.

One note on having you bird on your shoulder, any shirt is going to get chewed. If you have buttons on your shirt, the will crack them in half. Most of us have T Shirts and sweatshirts we wear due to the inherent nature of a Parrot to chew on clothing, towels etc. They clean their beaks doing this. If your going to try to command your bird while he is in control and bite\nip you if he doesn't like what your commanding, a nip/bite may well happen as it is. That is the wrong place for your Grey to be if your going to do that. You are doing the right thing in removing saying NO as you remove him immediately and placing him on his cage or stand, then walk away. You do need to get this under control quickly, or your Grey will not be a bird you can trust on your shoulder with out fearing a lip, cheek, ear or neck piercing if this habit gets worse.

Here you go...

We all know females talk alot, but they just say the same thing over and over. When the Males talk, it's something important or logical. ;-) :-) Dave is spot on, as always.

Welcome Dawn! It's always GreYt to read of a rescued bird being taken in. It sounds like your on the right track and that TAG is going to love his new home. Karma to you for doing such a wonderful thing. :-)

Very touching story Natasha. Karma to you for rescuing that poor soul and giving a good life, even though it was sadly cut short.

Stephanie, this is a wonderful Topic. Thanks for starting it . It is obvious you put a lot of thought, heart and soul into it. :-) Dave, That was a very informative and real world post describing the Rescue "Lifer" that is there because of very deeply embedded serious issues that will not go away in a month or two, if ever. With all the information that is being posted by all here, it will give people considering adoption a real feel for rescue or adopting and also key questions to ask when dealing with a rescue in finding a Grey or other Parrot in need of help. Most rescues are VERY picky and adamant about matching the right bird with the right person or home. This does not mean a mismatch never occurs, but it lessens the probability. Some rescued parrots sit in foster homes for a year or more due to there deeply ingrained issues and most foster parents post very candid appraisals of how the bird is doing and how they are handling the birds issues. As, Dave so well said, some birds will not change much if at all. IT is those that either need a person with a will of iron and a heart bigger than Texas to make the decision to take the bird and give it a forever home regardless of it's personality. Some may just end up in huge flight cages and be able to live out the remainder of it's life in a nice place, good food and responsible care givers. What is more beautiful and breathtaking, than to watch these amazing birds flourish, interact with one another and burst into wondrous flight? I hope all considering adopting or purchasing a baby read this thread first. It will help them truly understand the huge step they are about to take.<br><br>Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/05/04 15:48

GreYt Job!! Awww, what a cute baby Grey you have there, thanks for posting it. :-)

Greys learn by association and words that they consider important enough to learn or they just like the sound of it. The best thing you can do to try and encourage him to pick up new words, is to associate them with items or actions and say them with an enthusiastic voice. Just as humans, they learn better from enthusiasm, rather than just doldrums comments. When giving him apple, grape, nut, seed, water etc. say it is your giving it to him. When your doing something like making coffee, feeding the other critters like dogs, leaving, going etc. say what your doing and a short two or three word sentence. It may take weeks or months before you start hearing them, but you will if he determines they are necessary things to learn in associating with the flock and getting what he wants. Just time and patience will tell, but I will tell you, whether he says he whether he says the words or not, when you say them, you will see him act accordingly to what you just said. They understand them whether they say them or not. :-) Kind of like your dogs, say "wanna go for a walk?" and watch them run around in excitement while your trying to settle them down to get the leashes. :-)

It just depends on each individual Grey. There are owners here whom have never been bitten. But, I must say, that is unusual. As a Grey or any other Parrot for that matter ages, they start realizing they are an individual with a brain that decides if they want to do something you wish them to or not. This is a formative time as they mature and the important thing to establish and with consistency is what is acceptable and not in flock behaviour. A hard bite of course is not acceptable. However, they will give a good one and you just need to learn their body language such as eyes pinning, neck feathers ruffling etc. so you can be prepared and stop it before it happens by simply backing off if you don't need them to do something like step up right that minute. Enjoy you baby grey and all the sweet things they do and sounds they make. :-) Don't sweat MIGHT happen or not.
