That was a good way to do it. using items he is familiar with and considers a safe zone. No stress equals progress. It's good to hear he is verbalizing his name now. Nice photo! Inara gave good advice and that link is very informative as well.

LOL, ok I read things too literally sometimes.

At this point you need to leave him in the cage. he is terrified due to suddenly being in a new home, different people, different furniture and also a new cage. Nothing makes sense to him right now and he is going to take time to just set inside the safety of that cage and get comfortable in the new surroundings and people. You will not be close to any outside of cage interaction until you have spent weeks sitting next to the cage interacting with him by talking, just sitting next to it and getting him used to you even changing his water and seed, veggies etc, daily. If you try to rush it, like you have already, it destroys all trust and reenforces his present thought you of being a predator and scary. Just slow way down and show him lots of patience, respect for his space and love. Things will evolve at his speed, not yours. In regards talking, that will not come out at all for a while in a strange and scary environment where he does not presently view you as friend and trusted person. He has no reason to try verbal interaction at this time. The other sad thing is he is a very young grey and going through his terrible two's presently which is most the time not a fun time for the grey owner that has had him since he was a chick. They start expressing their will and rights around that age. Greys on average start talking around 12 to 14 months old. Welcome by the way. It's GreYt having you here.

All I can say is LOL..Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Thanks for all the belly laughs reading this thread! Fortunately Dayo does not have any sounds, noises or words/phrases that are embarrassing. He does give a raspberry sound when he asks someone for a piece of their food when they are visiting and they ignore him.

Your grey is in love and doing the mating dance with wings dropped and vocalizations. Petting and stroking your grey on the back is a sexual behavior to a grey and you should really stop doing it. It is increasing the sex drive. It is certainly an endearing to watch a grey so in love with their parront. Thanks for sharing it.

Well, based upon your observances so far, it does seem increasingly likely you have been named Woooo, you "Good Girl". That is actually very astonishing in terms of grey intellect displaying the mental ability to give a loved flock member a name when they do not openly make known what their name is. How very intriguing if this proves 100 percent certain in the long run. Thanks for the detailed update on this.

It sounds like you too are off to a GreYt start over the last month. Thanks for this update. It was very enjoyable to read.

It's good to hear Paco is opening up. The phrase "Truck backing up" is interesting. One of those thiings that makes you go Hmmmmm, I can wonder why that was important enough for Paco to pick up, other he needed to move because he was right behind the truck.

Wow, what a survival story on this anniversary of a tragic and horrifying day and days beyond. It just goes to show how humans and our birds can survive in circumstances one would think would be the death of them. A temperature of 35 degrees is very frigid for a grey or any tropical species for that matter. Cheers to you for doing such a great job and keeping everyone in your home alive!

This is interesting. It is going to take some time for you to come to understand what this truly means. It is very cute behavior though.

What a beautiful day in the sun and then a well deserved nap afterwards. Thanks for sharing these photos.

GreYt post BaileysPapa! Thanks for sharing this. I am positive it has give us all some new ideas to enhance our parrots diet and make it more pleasurable and less redundant at the same time.

The leather custom fit sounds like a better received option than the hard plastic cones they place on some birds. It sounds like our avan vet is very wise and staying up to date on whats available on the market. Your doctor I would think is probably the most reliable expert on whether plucking may start back up afterwards. But, many times when a bird that does not have a long history of it begins. It starts due to a health issue and once thats resolved, they have no driving reason to pluck again. We all know plucking is not a natural behavior at all. It starts due to either psychological or health reasons and if left unchecked for a long period can become an obsessive compulsive behavior. Kudo's to you for taking such good and immediate action when one of your birds displays any type of abnormal behavior.

Ditto the others. The only way you could get the cage restored properly would be through a powder coating shop that would sand blast it and then powder coat it. I suspect you could purchase brand new cage cheaper than that though.

Whew, you dodged a bullet on that one. It is hard to resist a temptation like that.

LOL! I can just imagine what went through Jakes mind. He looks at the bowls and realizes mommie placed them in the wrong places confused. Then thinks it over and decides mommie had a brain fart. So to help mommie in this disconcerting moment decides to help her by fixing it. Seed by Seed move one to the other. Then after much time and effort, Jake realizes the bigger problem is you cannot move the water. So finally stops. He is probably busy writing you a sticky now telling you to add a third bowl in case you have a brain fart again. It will serve as the "Holding" container required to alleviate the seed and water not getting mixed together. The water will be more difficult to move, as he will need to drink a bunch and then regurge in to the correct container.

Thats good news Penny. It sounds like things have calmed down and everybody is living in harmony again. Your doing the right thing and over time I have no doubt Nilah will reach the point of being able to cage her in the morning.

We must let our two parrots out at the same time. Both being flighted jake the conure wll fly away if dayo starts coming at him. If one is ever left in the cage, it is a disaster waiting to happen as they will cage fight through the bars every time. Don't know why, other than they can. There really is no way to stop them if they wish too. The only thing I can suggest is to have both out of the cage at the same time. If the Macaw goes after Paco, he will fly away quickly with no harm.
-
LOL!!! I doubt that will happen.

Informative post Dave! I agree 100 percent. A grey can take 100 percent of your time available. This is even more true of a rescued grey that needs a ton of work on building trust and maybe even needing to address possible health issues like plucking etc. We have only two parrots, jake the conure I first obtained that is a happy go lucky guy and then Dayo a year later. Dayo is very jealous and consumes a huge amount of time daily to keep mentally and physically growing and challenged. Jake hangs on the shoulders as much as he can and wants attention too, but not to the level that Dayo demands. If I still did not need to work (From Home fortunately) I would spend near 100 percent of my time with dayo.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the photos.
