They grow up so fast and she is adorable.

I have seen those blue feathers on other's greys from the pictures they shared, sometimes I think part of it has to do with the lighting as I have seen shades of purple also, maybe your baby is unique.

New parrot owner and in need of advice
judygram replied to EllieMae's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hello EllieMae and welcome to our family. Thanks to you for giving this grey a new chance at a real life, the others have given you some sound advice so just take it slow and easy. He is frightened right now and growling is to be expected so stay back until he shows signs of wanting you closer, speak softly to him, tell him what you are doing, offer him treats and don't push him for more than he is willing to give right nowl. I think he can become an awesome companion if you are willing to give it the time and patience he needs for a good adjustment, your being at home will only help in this transition and I predict that next year at this time he will be an entirely new grey. -
What a beautiful place to visit and your pictures make me feel like I am there when I look at them, your photography is outstanding.

upcoming homecoming!

Hello Darwin and welcome to our family. Don't worry about bonding with your new grey, it may take some time and much patience on your part but it will happen, just let him settle into his new home and let him decide on when he wants to interact with you. Yes greys that come from previous homes usually do bring baggage with them but if you know the person he is coming from then get as much information about his likes and dislikes and vet records so you will be better prepared but most of all just relax and don't stress out about it or he will sense it and act accordingly. -
So sorry to hear of this news about Nicholas but hopefully the medicine will take care of it, poor baby and please keep us informed.

Happy Hatchday Peanut, hope you had a wonderful day.

SAM, my new CAG and he is 4 months old.
judygram replied to Shan's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hello Shan and welcome to our family. Sam will open up and chatter more when he settles into his new home and feels more comfortable, after all it has only been 2 days and that is no time in grey time for it takes them a while so just be patient with him and give him plenty of time to adjust. Greys are known to be one of the quietest of the parrots but they have their times they can be quite vocal, you will notice that more as time goes by. Ray is right about the sunflower seeds and go easy on fruit also as it contains lots of sugar, concentrate on dark green leafy type vegetables and orange color ones like carrots and sweet potato, they can also have a little meat like chicken occasionally, you can also give a few nuts, grains, rices, legumes and sprouts are very good also. Please take a look in the bird food room for lots of ideas and suggestions for a healthy and balanced diet. You can offer pellets but he may not eat them, try several different varieties to find one he will eat, pellets are a good part of their diet but not a complete diet. Do provide a few toys in his cage but not so many that he doesn't have room to open up his wings and flap without hitting them, you might have to experiment to find which type he prefers, some love wood, some leather, some plastic and so forth. You can change them out every couple of weeks to give him some variety to keep him from getting bored. I would feed him first thing in the morning but keep pellets and a good seed mix available at all times as greys are foragers which means they eat all day long when they get hungry, they don't eat in meals like we do but depending on what you are having for dinner he can have some of that too. -
Hello Miked and welcome to our family. Congrats on your new addition to your family, now tell us more about him, his name, if he is weaned or not and so on so we can get to know him better, pictures are always welcome.

Alfie is a cutie pie, glad to hear he is doing well, thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

By all means get to know him better before you take him full time, it will lessen the shock of the transition to his new home, it will still be quite a change for him and get the present owners to provide you with as much of his background as possible for it helps to know what he likes and dislikes, past vet visits will be very helpful.

I think it is amazing how it is so fast, kind of makes me feel out of breath to listen to their little hearts beating like it does, yes everyone should listen to their bird's heartbeat.

Josey will have a sweet potato beak later today along with some turkey, green beans, corn and whatever else she wants. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
-
That is adorable of Issac and I love his response, he is a cutie pie. I kiss Josey's beak all the time, even my hubby does too if she obliges so I know where you are coming from.
-
Yes we do firmly believe in allowing the breeder to wean a baby bird before it goes to its new home but you are not the first one we have encountered from South Africa that has bought one so young but it seems to be so easy to do so but it will never stop until people stop buying them that way. Now I will get off my soapbox. I personally have never handfed a baby bird, all mine were purchased weaned but we do have a lot of members who have done it before and there are many threads in the nursury room that should provide you with most of the answers to your questions. I would think he may be ready to start nibbling on solid foods so try some suggested in the threads and by all means keep him on the full feedings until he starts refusing them, this is the abundance feeding way and it allows the bird to tell you when he is ready to stop, probably the night feeding will be the last one he will want when it gets to one feeding a day. Pictures would be welcome if you have some you would share with us.

So glad to hear she is obviously fine.
-
I do not allow my birds to land on or perch on lampshades, a definite no no.
-
Josey only gets human grade roasted peanuts in the shell, all the other ones get tossed.
-
She is being a brat, something they are good at but Josey will do that behavior if you get too close when you go by her, they love to lean out and grab ahold of you as you go by, I just keep a little distance between her and me as I go about my business.

Becker is a beautiful bird and you are lucky the girls love to interact with him.
-
I have to admit I sort of thought the same thing when I first saw it on my grey but Dave is right it is normal.

Hello Flowerchik and welcome to our family. Sounds like you have a full house so your new grey Zeke will have plenty of people to get socialized with and get spoilt by but I am glad you decided to add an african grey to the mix. Why not tell us more about him, his age and so forth so we can get to know him better and feel free to share some pictures if you like. -
Anxious about introducing new Labrador puppy to 5 year old Grey
judygram replied to Jolly's topic in The GREY Lounge
You know you will never be able to leave them alone in the house when Jolly is out of his cage as a lab is a bird type dog and I would never trust his natural instincts to fetch that bird but others here have dogs inside and birds and they manage and so can you. If you handle things right Jolly should not become jealous or start plucking, just make sure he has his quality one on one time as he always has and other members who have dogs and greys will chime in with their ideas and suggestions on how they make it work for them. -
Be thankful you have a bird that will occasionally take a full plunge bath as a lot of us don't have that luxury but yes by all means make it a regular thing. They should bathe about twice a week, more if the humidity is low in the house. I would love to see a video of Felix in one of his bathing moods if you could manage that, it would be a hoot.
