Of course they are terrified at this point, its all new surroundings for them so expect it to take a while especially for Dutch. I read your post in the other thread where you posted pictures of Emmy and she is a sweetheart but Dutch will require more time and patience from you so don't take offense when he puffs up and growls at you, that will pass when he feels more comfortable. They may mourn for their previous owner since she had them for a long time but just take it slow and easy with them and ask any questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. Why would you think it was a no no to let her take an almond from your hand, nothing wrong with that, in fact it is the most common way to bribe our birds to do something we want them to do like going back into their cage at bedtime but it was great that she took it from your hand, I guess you thought she could have bitten you and yes she could have but show no fear for they sense that and by her taking it from your hand you are on the road to building trust with her. You have to earn their trust and food rewards for good behavior is just good sense.

You are luckier than you think, doing a great job by the way.

What an adorable grey Emmy is and that is so precious how she sleeps, I knew a few of them do sleep like that but never seen a picture of one doing it but it makes sense since she is missing all her toes, she may not be able to perch like most greys for their feet lock onto the perch to keep them from falling while sleeping. You may have to get her another cage with smaller width bars so she can climb better. Emmy is a sweetheart right off the bat but Dutch is going to take some work but just take your time with him and let him set the pace for allowing any interaction with you, he is a mature bird that is going to be a challenge to you but if you do not push him and allow him to come to you then you should do fine, be sure to read some of the threads in the rescue room and especially the one by Katana, the one of bringing Gilbert into her home and heart, a must read for someone like you.

Fruit should not be given every day, romaine lettuce is good as is the other dark green leafy vegetables like kale, mustard, beet and turnip tops, apples are ok as long as you remove the seeds and grapes are nutritionally lacking, they are full of sugar so no wonder they are a favorite.
-
Lets hope it all blows over and doesn't live up to expectations.

If you want to discourage that particular noise then ignore it, if you make some kind of fuss or reaction to it then she will continue because it only reinforces it, ignore the bad and reward the good.

Poor baby, she has had a rough time but with the meds I hope she gets to feeling better very soon, keep us informed.

Hello John and welcome to our family. So glad to hear you have taken in Bing and given him a new forever home and it might take a long while but hopefully he will open up to some interaction with you and your family, it might not be anything like what you have with Wiki but just let him go at his own pace and see what happens. I look forward to seeing pictures of all your flock.

Hello Dimitri and welcome to our family, why not tell us more about yourself and whether you have a grey or other birds as we want to get to know you better.
-
Hello Jdmjr1 and welcome to our family. Do you have a grey at present, any other birds? Please tell us more about yourself and your birds if any.

Sounds like the problem resolved itself as is usually the case but it bothers us none the less.

Josey does pin her eyes but mostly because she is happy with something like when she is eating a favorite food, like that darn cheese she loves, works every time. That is interesting that some do not pin their eyes, wonder why, maybe one of the experts can enlighten us on that.

Jill is right, sometimes they play rough and bang their toys around and get bruises and slight cuts but keep an eye on it and keep us informed.

Hello Daniela and welcome to our family. You are off to a great start with this grey and as mentioned earlier in Ray's post, he is a young grey so his adjustment should go smoother than if he was an adult bird. If I were you I would try to find out more details from the previous owner, vet records would be very helpful and any particulars about what he likes and dislikes as every bird is an individual and is different. You are doing the right thing in letting him decide when he comes out of the cage and wants interaction with you, its best not to push for more than he is willing to give, you want to get him to trust you and it has to be earned so take it slow and easy and let him set the pace. You didn't mention a name so what is his name and pictures are always welcomed if you have some you would share with us.

Hello Jared and welcome to our family, so glad you could take Charlie in and give him a new forever home. Sometimes they take to you very quickly, he might have known a good thing when he sees it but keep in mind he is on his best behavior right now and it could change when he fully settles into his new home and more of his true personality shines thru but at least you are off to a good start, better than most get when rehoming an adult grey. He is a real sweetheart from the picture you shared and so is your amazon even if he is camera shy, Rocky does have vibrant coloring and is a real looker. I bet the combination of Charlie and Rocky is going to be wonderful for both birds, even if they don't get along they will be company for each other.

Maverick distracting me from the game :)
judygram replied to BeeFernandez22's topic in The GREY Lounge
They sure can be snuggly when they want to and Maverick is adorable trying to get you to rub his head, so of course you oblige for you take what you can get, thanks for sharing that with us. -
So sorry to hear that Zak has ingested the zipper pieces and I can offer no help but you might be able to feed him the oatmeal from a spoon, thats the way Josey eats her oatmeal, it doesn't get on her beak as much though she doesn't really care if it does and I figure its a good way to get meds in her if the occasion ever arises, hope it all goes well and he doesn't suffer any ill effects from it.

Hello Evalynne and welcome to our family, so glad to hear you are fostering this grey hopefully to become permanent if that is what you want. Yes many of our important threads have been stickied so they are easy to find but please browse thru all the threads as you will find invaluable information in bits and pieces all over this forum, probably many of the questions you will have were already asked and answers are there in black and white, maybe other colors too. It doesn't surprise me that you found out how smart they are rather quickly, they teach us and own us, not the other way around. Pictures are always welcomed if you would share some with us.

Hello Pjbmom and welcome to our family. So sorry about your previous grey but glad you want to open your heart for another, as you have found out a grey is an awesome creature and you are going to make a great parront to another one. Many of us here have more than just one grey or one bird, I have 3 parrots and many of us that have greys have more than one but I like having different species of birds, you find that each one is different and has their own personality, they certainly do make life more enjoyable as you well know. We have an amazon room where you may share some pictures and tell us some about him/her if you like. Are you looking to get a baby or are you looking at getting a rescue or rehomed grey?

Hello Rachel and welcome to our family. Congrats on your new additions to the flock though sorry about the conditions they had to live in before coming to you but Dave is right about hoarders, they care but they take in so many that each does not get the care and attention they deserve, thayt should change now that they have new homes. Yes please read thru as many of the threads here as possible to learn all you can before they get there and ask all the questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can especially after they arrive, we are here to help you but it sounds like you are on the right track, keep us informed. Pictures are always welcomed after you get them home.

Looks like a great setup and Alfie is enjoying it, you did a great job with it.
-
Josey would probably turn inside out for cheddar cheese, in fact Sunny my conure would too but they all think they should have some of whatever you are having.
-
I bet when Brandi molts out all those feathers there will be no stress marks, just give it some time.
-
Hello Aaron and welcome to our family, so glad you could give this grey a new forever home. You seem to have the ight attitude so I think you are on the right track to gain his trust, it just takes time and lots of patience but it will come. Be sure to read the thread in the Rescue Bird Room titled "Gilbert is home" it is about another grey that came from previous homes and she is just now seeing real progress in his trusting of her and his new home.
-
You did the right thing in taking her in but I hope it is nothing serious but she is in good hands, keep us informed.
