  1. Oh no Margerite, hope your cat is going to be ok but yes it seems there is always something that comes up to take that money you had set aside for something else. Let us know what you find out about your cat.
  2. Jason, we haven't heard from you for several days now, how is Ernie?
  3. I think if you are lucky to have a grey that does allow a lot of petting then go for it as most of us have greys that do not allow but so much touching and handling. But you do have to be careful when they reach maturity that you avoid the back and areas that tend to stimulate the sexual urges that comes with the hormonal changes. David you are so blessed to have a grey that is so affectionate, I am jealous as Josey allows some but not a lot anymore, oh well I take what I can get.
  4. Hello Rick and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Merlin. I commend you for adopting a rescue grey, not everyone can do that and it takes a special person to be able to adopt a bird with possible baggage that so many rescues seem to have. I would bring him in and leave your other pets put away for a bit and bring them out one at a time to introduce them to your bird, take it slowly as Merlin may be frightened at first, you don't know whether he has ever seen or been in a house with any other animals. Let Merlin decide when to come out of his cage as greys can be very possessive of their domains but any time he is out do supervise for with a cat and dog you need to be vigilant in case one thinks Merlin may be a tasty treat. Talk to him a lot even with him in his cage and offer him treats from time to time, he may be very receptive of you or he may be fearful, it all depends on his previous owner's handling. You will find lots of useful and helpful information in our many threads so do read thru them and do ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. When you get a chance take a few pictues of Merlin and share them with us as we would love to see him.
  5. I live in Virginia but I don't recall ever hearing of the Project Perry but I am glad you got to go and see it, sounds like a wonderful place. I don't know of any places like that near me but karma coming your way for possibly going to spend some time volunteering there.
  6. Heather if you are going for 7 to 10 days I would think Pumpkin would be fine for that amount of time. You are certainly bonded with your bird by now and you will miss her but she will be glad to see you when you get back. As long as you have someone who can come in and take care of her needs and provide some company for her then she should be fine with that. I can understand how you feel you need a vacation as we all need to recharge our batteries so to speak from time to time and to relax and get away from it all so do it.
  7. Mischief sounds like an appropriate name for her but she is a beauty, thats for sure and I bet soon she will be the sweetest thing you have ever had, she just needs some time and some TLC for her to develop into a real sweetheart, thanks for sharing some pics with us.
  8. Hello Lyngucci and welcome to the family, so glad you found us and we look forward to hearing more about you. You build bird perches but you don't mention whether you have a grey or not, doesn't matter if you don't as it is not a requirement to join you just need to have an interest in them. I saw one of your perches you make in another thread, they look nice and I would imagine they help to keep the talons filed down, they can get very sharp. I will have to check out your website and see what you have to offer. I think you will like it here just fine, we all try to get along with one another and are friendly to everyone whether you have a grey or not so join in the conversations and make some friends in the process.

    Names.

    You have got to be kidding me!!! {Feel-good-0002006E}
  10. After reading that article in Bird Talk magazine I would never try to take my birds into Mexico for fear they would be seized from me, not going to take that chance and if you value your birds like I do you wouldn't try it either.
  11. Hello Kim and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Cadillac. You have some cute names there for your pets, I love Cadillac and Junebug and you have a nice little flock there from the pictures you shared with us. You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so read thru them at your leisure and do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.
  12. "Treat animals as family" you disgust me!
  13. Spencer is darling but do I detect some redness there on his head down close to his eye, it looks like a cut there above his eye but maybe it is just some juice staining his head, why don't you check that out Ralph and let us know what that is.
  14. Hello Dennisandholly and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Cody. That poor amazon, no wonder he escaped but he found the grass was greener on the other side which is in your family so you made him yours. I'm so glad you could find it in your heart to take him in and give him a good home, no he will never be very tame but I bet he is grateful for what he does get and that is a lot more than he was used to. We do have a lot of useful information in our many threads so do read thru them at your leisure and do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of Cody you would like to share with us we would love to see them and we have an other birds room where you can post some of Lucky if you like.
  15. Congrats David I knew you could do it and you both look so happy, thanks for sharing that with us.
  16. You got "suckered" in Eve, that cockatoo has probably got that act down pat, hard to tell how many people he fools into thinking they are just gonna have him step up onto their hand and BAM he has you by the flesh determined to keep a little souvenir, gotta watch out for them. :pinch:
  17. I would start keeping a diary of when you feel better and when you feel the worst and where you are and such, that will help to pin down whether or not it is bird related.
  18. I would doubt that Brutus ate the piece out of the bell, it is probably laying around somewhere where you just haven't found it yet but if you are worried about it then by all means give your avian vet a call and inquire about it.
  19. I believe you, it does not surprise me in the least, people don't give them enough credit but they are very smart and intuitive. I don't know whether it is that it is painful for her or just that it is out of place that bothers her about the feather but I wouldn't think she is in any real pain with the feather. You could pull it out yourself but that might be painful for her especially if you have never done that before, you might cause her pain in trying to remove it but my guess is she will have it taken care of by morning so let us know tomorrow if I am right or not.
  20. I would just leave it alone if it is not bleeding and Whisper will take care of it in her good time, this happens frequently and it is best to let them pull or chew it off to get rid of it as it will never stay in it's rightful place now. We here in Virginia have only had rain today and just a little freezing on the trees but it may cause some problems tonight but will just have to see. I hate it when the power goes off but I wouldn't worry about the house being a little cold if it does go off again as they can handle it cooler for a short period of time. I hope she gets it out no problem but do not hesitate to call the vet tomorrow if you do have questions and let us know what happens in any case.
  21. I see you live in Maryland, I knew you had to be somewhere near North Carolina when you mentioned Phoenix Landing, I am in Virginia and I am familiar with that rescue group, they do great work. Schrodinger may eventually come to be more socialable with other people, my Josey used to only allow me to pick her up and handle her but she is gradually allowing my hubby to do a little of that now so there is hope for Schrodie too. Thanks for the story behind the name, I knew it had to be one for that name.
  22. Planet of the Apes - Charlton Heston
  23. It's My Party - Bronson Pinchot
  24. Lisa brings up some good points to consider, it is not just the price of the bird but all that other stuff you need to go along with the bird. I commend you for considering adopting an older bird but if the lack of money is the only factor then a rescued grey may not be for you. It takes a special type of person to take in a rescued bird for it usually comes with some baggage and may require more training and patience than with a baby grey. I am not trying to talk you out of getting a grey but you need to research and find out if this is what you want and that is a lifetime committment you will be making so it is not to be taken lightly.
