  1. I am so sorry to hear this Ralph but I think she had a very good life, she was loved dearly and I am sure she was very happy with you. She is flying freely over the Rainbow Bridge and you will see her again some day. Please accept my condolences on your loss.
  2. I think it is best to leave the handfeeding to the breeder as they know what all is involved and what is best for the baby until it is weaned, that way you will get a healthy grey, maybe a longer wait but it is worth it.
  3. Welcome back Ralph, we missed you but glad to hear that Oppie is home now and I would imagine he will settle in pretty soon. If you don't want him up on your shoulder then you are going to have to keep him from going up there and you do that by using the other arm to stop him and keep alternating with the other hand until he gets the message, it may take a while but he will learn. I look forward to seeing some more pictures of Oppie when you can get around to sharing some with us.

  5. Hello Terry and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and whether or not you get a grey. You are right to question whether or not you should get a grey as not enough people do and that is why so many birds end up in rescues and up for adoption. Would you be interested in adopting an older bird versus getting a baby grey? If you are going to bring a bird into your home you are going to have to be able to stand a little poop on you from time to time but it is not like you will be swimming in it and in fact greys can be trained to poop on command or go certain places. Please do read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.
  6. She is enjoying her new "perch" and it looks nice, thanks for sharing the pic of Ana Grey on her net.

  8. Hello TC2 and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Pogo. Is this your first grey, first parrot? It sounds like he/she is getting well socialized and that is great as greys tend to be more attached to one or two people. You have come to the right place looking for great information and we have a wonderful bunch of knowledgeable members who are willing to spend their time here helping one another with their problems. We also do a lot of chatting and getting to know one another and you will make some new friends who share the same passion for their greys as you do. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. I see Pogo in your avatar but if you have some other pictures of him/her you would share with us we would love to see them.
  9. Thanks Dan for sharing that with us but even with the volume turned all the way up you can barely hear him talking but his chirps and other sounds are loud and clear. I believe a lot of what he was saying was in your voice and a man's voice is lower and therefore it was harder to hear. Maybe sometime in the future you will be able to get a better one of him talking. Not meaning to rain on your parade, you did the best you could since Dayo doesn't like to perform before a camera. Maybe you can hide a microphone nearby so you can capture his words and phrases.

California Condor What is the incubation period of wild turkeys?
  11. Josey's cage is close to the thermostat at my house but I have the cage pulled out enough she cannot reach it so I have not had a problem. If at all possible can you move it away from the wall enough that Charlie cannot reach it, if not you may have to relocate the cage elsewhere. I see you have provided him with different things to chew on but what one type of thing does he like the most? Find that out and provide plenty of that type of thing for him to chew to his heart's content. There is not a whole lot you can do to distract him from chewing on what he likes like the thermostat except to keep him far enough away from it that he can't reach it. Sorry I don't have any more ideas for you but maybe some of the other members will have some better ones for you.
  12. A picture would be worth a thousand words Kimberly:S
  13. Gosh Kimberly that is a pretty good bite there on your lip and I can imagine it is pretty sore, yes you are gonna have to watch her more closely when you let her out after being gone for a while. Some greys are different, now Josey does not react that way when I am gone for a while and she has never bitten me YET but I know it could come at any time. You need to be more careful and watch her body language as she is telling you without saying anything to be wary of her. I doubt that will leave any scar if it does it should hardly be noticable.
  14. Thank God, Brittany that they weren't toxic and they probably didn't taste good so he just crushed them up to make a little mess for you to clean up, whew, another disaster averted, thanks for letting us know the good news.
  15. Brittany, for most vets even on the weekends there is usually an emergency number you can call for help and advice so call around and see if you can find someone who can guide you in the right direction for only an avian vet would know whether your bird is in any danger, hope you can get an answer for I know how worried you must be.

Actually the Hyacinth Macaw is the one referred to as the gentle giant. Zygodactyl means they have 2 toes projecting forward and 2 toes projecting backwards. When the European settlers came to the American continent there were two domestic birds native to the Americas, one was the Muscovy duck, what was the other bird?
  19. I think it is a reasonable price since she is talking about $475 in Canadian dollars, converted to US currency it amounts to about $375 and that is not a bad price on that style of cage.
  20. I don't see why not Shelia as we do other foods the same way for one butternut squash provides many meals for a bird.
  21. This is the part of your job I really like and they are so cute and adorable and how can you give them back, this is where I would not be able to let them go back to the store, thanks Berna for sharing them with us.
  22. Eve I don't use the open top just for that very reason but Josey likes to play or perch on the closed top some but she does come out the little door at the very top of the highest part above the big door, it is not shown as open in the pic, there is where she comes out and promptly drops a poop, hence I always put papers down for that very reason.
  23. I am so sorry to hear that Kook lost his fight for life but yes life can be cruel but at least you had him for a while and he was happy. Know in your heart you did all you could for him but his fate was already sealed but he is gasping no longer as he is in a place where he will never know another painful moment, he is soaring over the Rainbow Bridge. Kook did love you and he also knows you did all you could so don't blame yourself as he wouldn't want that for you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
