Hello Brad and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Scooter.
Thanks goodness he didn't have to spend much time at the pet store, even though they are supposed to know what they are doing some birds are subjected to mistreatment while in their care, maybe unintentional but ignorance is no excuse.
You are to be commended for taking in this grey, most people would rather have a baby grey and not one that may be set in his ways and sometimes with extra baggage.
Be sure to give him plenty of time to settle into his new home and to learn to trust you as it will take a little longer with a 10 year old bird.
Your avian vet would be the one to talk to about his eye and if he has not been seen in quite a while then he needs the checkup to see if he is healthy.
You will find lots of useful information in our many threads and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.
We love pictures here so if you have some of Scooter you would share with us we would love to see them.
Your grey does need out of cage time so just open his door and allow him to come out on his own, leave his food and water inside hiscage and he will have to go back inside for it.
I agree with the others, something has changed or happened that he is uncomfortable with you handling him now, you should know him pretty well since you have had him for 10 years. He is fully mature now and maybe he just doesn't want to go along with everything you are doing with him now, sometimes my grey will not want me to get her as soon as she comes out of her cage so I allow her to stay on top or on the playstand on the side until later when she is more receptive. They have minds of their own and sometimes they need to be left to themselves so don't force yourself on him if he wants otherwise.
I really do think he may be plucking because he is being kept inside his cage all the time so allow him to spend some time out of cage and see if things improve. Please keep us informed.
Like the others have said, greys tend to pick a favorite person who they will allow to touch and interact with and everyone else has to keep a distance but that doesn't mean that the others are left out completely.
Give him more time to feel comfortable, two months is not that long a time when you are working with an african grey who is 4 years old, he needs to learn to trust the others and they can be the ones to give him treats. They should continue to talk to him and let him see what they are doing but the should not force themselves on him, let him dictate when he is ready for more personal interaction.
What a cute little baby grey, Archie is adorable but then what baby grey isn't, I would indeed keep him for he is a little piece of Sonny and Cher, thanks for sharing a pic of him with us.
Yes birds are notorious for hiding illness but I hope this was just some food in his ear but if you have any doubts you can always consult your vet but keep an eye on him and let us know how it goes.
There are no dumb questions, if you do not know just ask, we have many many members who will be glad to try to give you an answer or find out the answer for you.
PMSL:woohoo: I guess as long as he is only getting the paper while you guzzle the beer it is fine but I will have to draw the line at him getting a drop, bad Jill if that happens.:cheer:
The countdown continues but it is getting closer and closer to that day that Juno will be home, can't wait and I know you are getting impatient but soon, real soon.
Corn is sort of a "junk food" for them but they do enjoy it so much just like grapes are a favorite of many birds but it has little to no nutritional value, again another "junk food" item.
Wish Josey liked spinach more, she thinks it is more for just throwing around. :silly:
You are exactly right, food does end up with hot spots while other spots may be only warm, if you do use the microwave for birdie foods please stir it and then make sure it is not too hot for them.
BTW, since they invented the microwave I find that I couldn't live without it now, so handy and quick.
Those are absolutely adorable, yummy stuff they are eating and then a bath to wash away the grime and they are enjoying it so much, thanks for sharing them with us.
Yum, yum, yum is all he looks like he is saying here in these shots, that stuff must be pretty good as he is going after it with gusto, thanks for sharing the pics with us, I enjoy seeing a hearty eater.
I try to bathe Josey twice a week, I take her into the shower and get her as wet as I can for she won't help by opening up her feathers but I do the best I can.
You should bathe your bird at least twice or maybe three times since you live where it stays relatively dry and use the aloe vera juice.
Hello Dave and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Avy.
She is a gorgeous grey, thanks for sharing her pics.
Hello Dutch and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Breeze.
I am so happy you could find it in your heart to take this wonderful grey into your home, shame on the store for putting her where she wouldn't be seen much because of her disability, most would assume no one would want a cripple but they are so wrong.
Breeze sounds like she is settling into her new home, no doubt she is very grateful for the love and attention she is receiving now so continue what you are doing for it works.
You will find lots of useful information in our many threads and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.
We love pictures here so if you have some of Breeze you would share with us we would love to see her.
Oh Bernie, what can I say but thanks so much for my full moon shots, they are really great and the video was amazing and it had the perfect ending, you couldn't have done it better if you had orchestrated the whole thing. I will be eternally grateful for these pics, you are one sweet man, I love the pictures and I love you too.
