  1. Yes that is very true Msasser and you would be surprised how many parrot mixes come with peanuts in the shell, I throw them away and only give my fids the roasted unsalted peanuts meant for human consumption, learn something new every day.
  2. Hello Angelo and welcome to our family, so glad to hear you want to own an african grey and you have come to the right place to learn all you can before you committ to it, be sure to read thru all the threads here for lots of useful information for there is none better than first hand experience. I am concerned though that you mention getting an unweaned baby, that would be a very bad idea especially if you have no experience in handfeeding baby birds, so much can go wrong if you don't know what you are doing and the baby will still bond with you even if you never have a hand in feeding it formula. I would like to see this practice of selling unweaned baby birds illegal here in the USA like it is in the UK.
  3. I am glad to hear you want to add a grey to your household but why do you want an unweaned baby, the bonding will take place even if you don't participate in the handfeeding process, some people still believe that they have a stronger bond if they handfeed but it is just not so. Unless you have some experience with handfeeding it is best left to those who know what they are doing preferably the breeder and I would like to see it outlawed here in the US like it is in the UK. So much can go wrong and your baby could die if not handled properly, please reconsider and get a just weaned baby grey.
  4. Welcome home Oscar and he seems to be settling into his new home already, it will take a while but he is off to a great start. A word of caution on a couple of things you are offering him to eat, grapes, corn and lettuce are fine for an occasional treat but it should not be a major part of their diet, grapes are mostly water as is the lettuce and corn doesn't have much nutritional value just starch so limit these. A better choice instead of lettuce is greens, dark leafy types, kale, mustard, beet and collard, if you want to include a little lettuce make it romaine instead of iceberg. I don't know what time he gets up but he should probably go to bed before 11 pm in my opinion, they need 10 to 12 hours of sleep and even though they usually get in a nap or two during the day he needs adequate sleep or he will be grumpy. That was great that you had family in and they had a chance to hold and play with him, it is essential that they be socialized to make them a better pet, everyone benefits from a well adjusted grey that does't mind having other people around besides their immediate flock family. Its natural for them to lose a little weight but do monitor it every day to make sure he doesn't lose any more and to see if he gains it back, keep doing it daily to get an average weight and then you can just do it once a week or so.
  5. You think! Yeah lucky them for the rest of us certainly show our age! You ask some very interesting questions Dave but what a thought provoking post, thanks a bunch.
  6. What a lucky girl Cocoa is to be able to have fresh palm nuts and she is enjoying them immensely from the looks of it, thanks for sharing the pics with us Sanggay.
  7. We do have several members who will be of help to you with your new baby grey but my question is why do you have a 6 week old baby and why did the breeder not finish what he started, you say he got rid of him, I would like to know who he is for I have a few choice words for him. Dave007 and Jayd are your best bets for advice on what you should be doing, they will be along shortly to give you some advice for I have never handfed a baby grey or any baby bird for that matter for it is best left to those who have experience because so many things can go wrong.
  8. This is the exception to Dave's rule, a baby grey especially one by itself needs something it can focus on as company or something to cuddle with when alone but by the time that bird gets old enough to start tearing it up then its time for it to leave.
  9. I was looking at this article on my home page today and look what it says about my sign, pretty accurate huh! Gemini What better companion for these chatty intellectuals than a pet with cognitive abilities that allow them to chatter? An African Grey Parrot is sure to inspire the Gemini mind. These birds belong to one of the most intelligent parrot species and possess the ability to develop a large vocabulary and communicate efficiently with their owners. They become easily bored and thrive in a stimulating, interactive environment. Gemini natives will find no lack of intellectual stimulation with these clever birds.
  10. Yes they have grown and it looks like you have some pearls there too since I am partial to them because one fell in my lap, can't wait to see how they look next week, thanks for sharing them with us.
  11. Rikki is such a lovely looking grey and your picture taking skills are finely tuned Melissa, she looks like she is right there in the room with me, thanks for sharing them with us and please share more with us from time to time, we have missed your posts.
  12. Thanks Dan, that about said it all, don't waste your money Kevin.
  13. Gosh I want them all, they look like a bunch of great stands and gyms, any bird lucky enough to get one of these would be very happy indeed, which one will you pick Adina or will you just take one of each!

You have some pretty birds Hil, they are both beautifully feathered and gorgeous but your grey looks like the camera caught him by surprise, hYou gote has a little bit of a wild look to his eyes, thanks for sharing them with us and thanks Cheyenness for posting them for hil.
  15. Just a short video I took of those two hyacinth macaws. http://vid162.photobucket.com/albums/t241/judygram/MVI_1721.mp4
  16. I have had the priviledge of seeing not one but two hyacinth macaws at the same time, we have a bird club member who had one of her own and she knew someone else who had one and they got together from time to time and she had both for periods of time, they are magnificent creatures and she always referred to them as the gentle giants.
  17. Looks like Rene was after the camera most of all, who cares about the other toys, he just wants the camera and if no one else noticed it I did. Rene is displaying sexual behavior, the wings lowered, panting is all sexual arousal, it may be a little early but that is definitely what it looks like to me so one word of caution Bonnie, do not rub him on his chest like you were doing especially lower down and stay away from the back, under the wings and anywhere around the rear end. You don't want to encourage this behavior for it will only frustrate him but just thank him and walk away. BTW, thanks for sharing the video with us.
  18. So sorry to hear of Piper's troubles, hope he is going to be fine and please keep us updated for we care.
  19. Chris I have to agree with the others, spend your time with Talula and build on that relationship and learn to deal with your disappointments for life is full of them and its how we deal with them that makes us strong. I know you are lonely right now but you never know what will be around the corner but remember things happen for a reason and you might not see it that way today but I think soon you will understand.
  20. I don't think I have seen that movie but I am going to see if I can find it for it is a must see now, thanks Dave for sharing it with us.
  21. I have a female Cag who is 4 years old, she prefers me over my hubby but that could be because I am the one who tends to her, he only asks for and gets kisses from her, she is not well socialized so she mainly goes to just me and she is very nervous prefering to stay in the area where her cage is but each grey is an individual whether they are a Tag or Cag and it is just the luck of the draw as to which personality you end up with in each species.
  22. Alls well that ends well!
  23. I think I am going with Gypsy as it reminds me of Gypsy Rose Lee which I might call her from time to time, it is the name I favor the most of the ones suggested so my wayward little friend now has a name so she is officially mine, thanks everyone for the name suggestions as it was a difficult choice.
