  1. Thanks everyone for all your encouraging words. You have made me feel better. I am off this morning, I let the birds out for a bit for breakfast, but they feel so ethinf isn't right and aren't interested in eating. So, I will put them in their cages and head out soon. Thanks again, I do feel better about leaving them thanks to all of you. Will update you when I get back. Judy, I am heading your way, down south to NC. Wish I had time for a visit!!
  2. I have to go away for 4 days, My 3 birds will be stuck in their cages from fri pm until wed pm...... I am distraught over this ....lap, Talon wont be able to sleep in her sleep cage. This will be the first time she will be left in her day, play cage at night. How will they fair? I'm so upset.....but I have absolutely no one that can handle them. My boys will feed them and give them fresh water, but that's it....
  3. Judy is right, the whole dominance thing in them being higher than us is completely untrue. I have perches across my sky lights and it doesn't make any difference, they still know who's in charge....
  4. Having perches all over the house never makes a difference, they chose to land where they want, and will chew the woodwork, windows door frames doors when they feel like it.... As for the shower perches being on the windows, my birds will chew the suction cups off and then all will go crashing down onto the floor as they fly off!
  5. We too are getting hammered over and over. But in the North as you know life continues, work goes on, no snow days at work, so we trudge on in, come home shovel some more and do it all the next day. Just always make sure we gas for the generator, gas in the cars and always have bread and milk....
  6. I would have to say, i believe you are in the wrong forum my friend...
  7. I have a deck off the back of my house. A good portion of it has a roof ,partial open walls and 2 doors. I would love to make it into a summer bird room. It doesn't really get any sun. I want to screen it in, but want to use SAFE scree/wire. DOes anyone have any advice? I am only going to use the room in the daytime, they would be in the house at night. Just want a fun bird room where they can get fresh air!
  8. Nancy, I would love some pics of your bird room. I would really like to make a room where they would be safe...just need some ideas..
  9. I know you say it doesn't emit any harmful fumes, but I have a self cleaning oven about 8 years old. When ever I have tried to use it, and my other one prior to this one, my eyes stung terribly and because of that fact, I felt it is never safe for my birds.
  10. Don't worry that 2 is too young. All my birds showed mating instincts early on. Just make sure you don't pet him any further down than his head/neck area. IF he gets to crazy, distraction is the key or put him on a play stand when he does that. You don't want to encourage it, you want to discourage it, but do it with out making a big deal. He will stop in due time. MAke sure he gets 12 hours of sleep/dark time, that will also help.
  11. I do play the bird sitter dvd. MY birds seem to like it while I am at work, but I only play it once a week, don't want them to get too sick of it
  12. RIP Cocoa, I remember you from the very first post....my prayers to your family. Fly free over the rainbow bridge
  13. Can't wait to hear your amazon stories, you are right, they are so different, but what a joy! Mine loves flying thru the house screaming her little head off, occasionally she will play fly tag with my timneh, it's the only game they enjoy together.
  14. I have found over the years that my fids are much happier if they get about 12 hours of sleep.
  15. One of my greys has a sleep cage in my bedroom. I cover it with a dark sheet. She prefers peace & quiet. If I am in my bedroom after she is in bed..she Shhh's me a few times loudly...if I continue to talk or make any noise..she gets mad and starts banging her bell loudly to tell me to Shut-up!
  16. Now that's what I call an UPDATE...SHE SURE PUT YOU IN YOUR PLACE!!
  17. Week 7.........Changing the thread title...My princess is still being a good girl in the mornings!

  19. DEFINATELY no! Better safe than sorry ...
  20. Congrats! She is beautiful!! Yes, we all forgot to mention that amazon smell. It is a comforting smell they emit when they are loving and happy. Olivia is a perfect name for her.
  21. I am so sorry to see this. My condolences.
  22. I love that you are taking the time to ask such a good question. I have 2 greys and got a 6 month old yellow crowned amazon on a whim. I knew nothing about them and am glad now that I didnt, if I did, I would not have gotten the love of my life. My amazon's named Nilah, there are many threads posted here about her and her antics. Can she be loud and animated? Yes. Does she scream? Never, only when my daughter died my dog pink! There is a video here showing her dislike. When I am having a loud conversation, she will too. When I am quiet, she is too. She loves to sing, one of her favorite things to do is sit in the windowsill and sing. She has no reason to scream, I talk to her a lot, so she will talk instead of screaming. She does not whistle like a grey, she prefers to sing opera and talk. She has captured my heart in a way that no other bird or pet has done. That's what makes an amazon so special. She is 5 years old now. She is very smart and can try my nerves when she makes her mind up to, but I learned right from the start, never to let her win, I only let her think she wins and that makes her happy and easier to work with. She is very bonded to me, we are inseperable when I am home. In fact, as I am typing this post with one finger on my iPad, she insists on perching and preaning my other hand . This is how I spend every night while here or watching the tv. So as long as you understand what you are in for (they can be very difficult when they get hormonal)and are sure you will be this amazons forever home no matter what, then you will never regret the love of an amazon! Oh and one other thing, their bite is very different than a greys. A grey will slice like a knife, an amazon is more like a vice grip....but never let them no it hurts, just say 'no biting' they get it....
