1. Jay & Maggie, I hope and pray that this ne change in his diet helps. Peanut butter has lots of fat in it. I would put it on toast and feed it to him. Cut it up into little squares for him. Spock is in my prayers.....
2. Dan, you are soooo right! I feel guilty when I work all day and then go out for dinner at night....you can feel your heart strings being pulled. I know I am anxious to get home and spend time with them when that happens.
3. Oh you poor thing! I know how you feel, I felt that way when we first got Talon. I don't live alone, but I do have to leave them in their cages while we are all gone for the day. I usually put the tv on( nick jr.) or the bird sitter dvd for them. I also give them extra treats/ veggies, fruit, etc. plus when they are sleeping, I pack up their toy buckets with wrapped surprises so they have something to do. Sometimes I put a bowl of water with a small rubber duck in it on the bottom of their cage to play in if they desire. I say be back soon as I am putting them in their cages and they always get a noodle treat when they go in as I am saying it. One of my greys will repeat it back to me. Their days are varied, sometimes they are in their cages all day, others they are out all day. I have found that they actually like their alone, quiet time very much. When they are out, they can get cranky and start to get into trouble. So, I wouldn't worry, your bird will thrive as you are giving him exactly what he needs. Just relax and know that he needs his alone time to nap also. B)

Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/03/04 20:53
4. We all know how much Amazon LOVE to sing. I am curious as to what songs you have taught your Amazon? Nilah sings, La la la la la la la in the scales. I WOULD LOVE SOME NEW IDEAS FOR SONGS!!!
5. Wow! I never knew they were so extinct. Karma for you Jayd and for taking time from your precious flock to teach us so much! :cheer:
6. Great idea Jooles!!! WHO HAS TIME FOR OTHER INTERESTS AFTER ALL THE BIRD CARE??????????            Seriously tho, My "other" interests besides my birds, cat, dog and horses are: Running, weightlifting at the gym and shooting at Smith & Wesson. I take my 15 year old son there every Sunday. Can't wait to hear everyone else's interests!
7. hmmm....interesting opinions. Knowing what I know now, if I could only have ONE bird, it would be an amazon. Although I LOVE my 2 greys to death. I really enjoy the 3 different personalities and differences. Having a tag, cag and amazon, all 3 are quite different. As I told my 10 year old one morning as I was at the kitchen table feeding my flock oatmeal and peanut butter toast... "I have 3 birds too many, but I wouldn't have it any other way!" :cheer:
8. IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK. Remember, when your grey drives you crazy, it is usually just a stage they are going thru just like children. All greys need the largest cage you can afford...
9. I would recommend you buy the largest cage you can afford. There are plenty of inexpensive cages out there that will ship to you for free. Best to measure the space and go from there. I have bought 3 cages in the last 2 years for 3 of my birds, most are 300-500 dollars.
10. I had an impromptu visit at the ex's house today while Talon was in the car with me. It's a long story, I will try to make it much shorter... Some of you may know that Talon was originally my oldest son's bird. He is now 21. When I divorced, I took Talon with me since I did most of the everyday care for her. She lived with our family for the first 2 years of her life in the house my ex and oldest son still live in. Then 4 of us left and moved into another house which she has lived in for the past 2 1/2 years. My oldest son stayed with his father, Talon went with me. So today, as I was driving home, my other son was walking home from school in the rain, (it's his day to spend with his father), I picked him up and drove him to the ex's. I had Talon in the car, so I thought I would bring him inside to see my oldest son who doesn't get to see her very often. It was quite interesting to see how she reacted to the house she knew as her home for 2 years......at first she looked around like she didn't know where she was, then as she started recognizing things, she would fly to her usual spots. She was quite happy to see my son and tried to fly up to his room to see if it still looked the same. She used to sleep in his room. He took her, she went right to the window that she loved to look out. She was looking everywhere......I could actually see her look at things, seem unsure, then see her look change as she began to recognize and remember things. We took her through most of the house, she played in the bathroom just like she always did when I was in the shower, did all the things she used to. She got really excited when she was in the kitchen as that is the one room that didn't have any changes in it. After about an hour, we took her home. She was happy to be home, but talked up a storm when she got home. I always wondered what would happen if I took her back there, would it upset her, confuse her? But it seemed like she enjoyed the visit, but was happy to be back home with us and her flock! Just wanted to share with you. :cheer:
11. I took Talon out for a drive just today when I went to pick up my son from school. She goes in an adventure pak to the car, then I let her sit on my shoulder while I drive. She loves it!! It's only a short trip, I drive extra slow and careful. She whistles and peeps and makes all kinds of sounds!! I have always taken my birds separately for short car rides just so they will get used to it and not freak out if they have to go to the vet.
12. She's an amazing talker and smart! She is 10 1/2 months old.
13. Well, it's official....Nilah is convinced I am a bird! when ever I come home, I always yell,"HI BIRDS!" my 3 usually say it back to me. Well, now every time I leave the room....Nilah yells and calls.."BIRRRDDD?" repeatedly until I answer or go in the same room as her. But the funny part is, when I finally appear after she is yelling BIIIRRRRDD?? for me, she says with a sigh, "Hi Bird." Of course at this point, we all burst out in laughter! Gotta love those Amazons!! :woohoo: :woohoo:
14. Nilah LOVES being in her cage, so she goes there willingly...except for bedtime. She prefers to sleep in her playground in the Living Room, but that's not allowed due to my dog and cat... My daughter has taught Rikki to say in the most sad, pitiful voice ever...."come baaackkkk, come baaackkk.." So I have to have my heart broken everytime I put Rikki in her cage and walk away. Talon doesn't mind going in her play cage. She always says, to me "be back soon okay???"
15. Wonderful news! Keep up the good work Spock, you can do it!! Love to you and your parronts, Nilah, Rikki & Talon
16. Spock, what a beauty! I LOVE this thread,I never knew there was somany species of Amazons! I have learned so much in this room, Special thanks to your mom & dad for taking the time to teach us so much about you and your species!! B)
17. Okay, here's story....everytime I come home, I yell "HI BIRDS!" to my birds in the other room as I am taking my coat off, etc. They all say Hi Birds to us everytime they see us. I also say "Hi Nilah" whenever I see Nilah. Well, she has decided that we are birds and says Hi birds to us whenever she sees us.....well, she has decided that Hi really does mean Hi, and when she wants us to come to her, she yells...BIRD!
18. Very nice! Nilah would love one:) of those!!
19. Awww, your a great parront, I am sure she will be back to herself in a while with all the tlc you are giving her.....
20. That beginning clip is so cute! :cheer: But I can't stand to see any bird free flying, it scares me....it's too dangerous in my mind...I had to turn it off...
21. WOW! What an excellent site, full of information! Thanks Jay, you've done it again!! Always filling our little brains with more and more knowledge! :cheer:
22. Not to worry Brittany. Like the others said, it is most important that Pepper is home safe and sound. I am thrilled for you and for such a happy ending. I have been so worried for you and Pepper. One of my greys was clipped when I got her, and like Dave and Dan said, it took her a year and a half before she could fly as feathers would break as the older ones grew in before the newones, but eventually all does end up well. Congratulations! Kisses and Hugs to Pepper!
23. There have been some log on problems for him. Just to clear a rumor...(Jill, cough cough )THERE WAS NO BANNING, Log on problems which I am working on and should be fixed momentarily. B)
24. OMG! I am so sorry Brittany. My birds have done this very same thing...fly to my shoulder as I have gone to let my dog or guests out the door, but thankfully, my quick reflexes prevented their escape by mistake. I now stand back off behind the door so it prevents them from flying out when the door does open ever so slightly. I hope and pray for Peppers safe return, never give up. stay outside as much as you can calling, searching, comforting Pepper. He needs to hear your voice.....you are in my prayers. Keep up the faith.
25. I wanted to resurrect this thread. There are many common everyday items we may occasionally give our birds to chew on while we are busy doing something else. I know myself, I have given Talon an occasional twistie tie, she loves them! Burt that is on the toxic list. Please take the time to click on the link above and read thru the items we need to be cautious of. It may save your birds life and it only takes a couple of minutes to read.
