This is so enjoy able to read and I'm learning from it to, I use pumkin seeds for treats when out of the cage, pellets are always in Alfies dish, he has small amount of cereal for breakfast, and tea is chopped mixed veg, I chop it in blender to make it small and do add small amount of seed mix as he will pick this out but as the veg is chopped so small has no choice but to eat the veg, ever couple of weeks Alfie loves some scambled egg, and if he can get to my plate will pinch what ever I have which is not always good has been known to run off with jacket wedges! I think you are doing really well and seeking out so much advice, keep up the good work its helping me with some tips as well.

Hi and welcome to the world of Greys, You will get some good advice from the guys on here, all i can say is it takes time to gain their trust, sit next to his cage and talk to him, maybe having a look on here at the posts about feeding and diet, most birds have pellets daily, and veg there are some good tips on the diet forum, and yes they do make some wonderful sounds of their own but it will take time as he needs to get used to new surroundings, I would also avoid a glove it is reported they do not normaly like these, they are sensitive birds and a greys pace with trust is a very slow one, but with time he will calm down. If he was not cared for very well be last owners he will be very nervous until he understands you will not hurt him, some of the more experienced guys on here will be along with loads of good advice. keep us updated on your progress.

Welcome look forward to some pictures. I have two dogs and my CAG is 11 months, he has very little to do with the dogs but I dont shut them out (never leave Alfie alone with them), he is fine with the one a golden retriver but the other a boxer he dive bombs, flys down and back up just missing the dog! Like most greys they soon sort it out and control everyone in their flock us included.
-
Best part was he flew down to the chair to pinch them but sadly had not got the camera for that apart.

Think its done now on new thread, its just me and PC's dont get on to well lol

Sand one is now removed, thank you, I did ask about beak clipping.................just joking
-
arrrrrh thanks danmcq, yes mine are all different shapes and sizes and different sorts and have a wooden branch type one and a apple tree branch which get swapped around and moved about.
-
yes he ment cement type he said they can cause sore feet, we have different ones but he said he has seen birds with sore feet due to these sort, there are a few different kinds Alfie has 3 one is almost like a sand covered one which is very rough, so I dont no really hope others will add their input on this.

Well guys all went well, clean bill of health!! Until today I did not know how much noise these darlings could make, needless to say he was not keen on the vet! Didn't go ahead with having him/her sexed though had good chat to the vet and we decided it was not worth the extra stress as at the end of the day does it really matter he is my lovely moody Alfie moon. Only bit of advice he did give was not to use the rough perches which I do as I throught it was good for nails, alfie does have other perches as well so what do you good people think?

That is so sweet

Checkthe barn I really understand my alfie is 10 months old had him at 10 wks and the differnt changes we have gone through and still going through are countless, I dont know where I would be withoput this site, your not doing anything wrong but it really does take a long time and when you think its getting better they come up with a new problem, I'm sure alfie sits and plots how to out wit me next. danmcq has given me soooo much good advice, and its not always easy to understand our problems by us writing on here but they are experienced grey owners who have been there and done that so they do get the idear and they understand the workings of a grey which I doubt I ever will, I'm still having the head problem and seem to walk with a permanate nod now, but how many times do you tell a young child no before they get it, tonight could well be different, try a dim light in the room you are all in that was a tip I had from here that really works it calms them giving you more time to just sit and talk to him, and loads of treats I use pumkin seeds there on ever shelf and in every pocket so always at hand. Take a deep breath and try dim light tonight look forward to hearing more, you will get some nice times honest

had a much better afternoon using perch for step ups put cuddly toy on lap top which stopped me having to remove him from it, had time indoors then time in sun in his smaller cage which will be used to travel in. Did try spraying him in the kitchen which has got harder lately and gave up pretty quick as he just kept flying off which led me to wonder if this is some of the problem, I no its important to spray/ bath but would it do much harm to leave off for a while, he wont go in water in shallow bowl ect, have been working with our shower he will now sit on top of shower screen but got no where near water yet just watches me. He has got his first vet check Friday, what sort of things do you think I should be getting vet to look at in ref to behaviour, he seems ok to me eats well ect. And yes Iv been head bobbing through out, used lots of treats to get him to come onto my lower arm and the perch but mostly the perch, also used perch when removing him from kitchen cupboards ect this was when I was making a coffee needless to say the perch got a few bites but I'm in tact.

Thanks for replys Im in the uk and dont think we have them here as much but will look into it

Thanks for the advice guys will try back in cage for 5 mins thats if i can get him in! And I dont allow him on my head but he does keep landing on it or my shoulder which he bites, I put my arm up for him to step up if I'm sat down but if I'm stood do tend to nod head so he has to fly off, he will bite when ever I try to remove him from places its not safe for him to be or not aloud to be such as TV ect. dave by swat do you mean knock him off with my hand?
-
I really do try to avoid him being on my head by nodding him off but if i dont move fast enough he swings down and goes for my face my arm was more to protect me but he got hold of it! the one time he even flew down to me and sat on my knee then started biting my hand, and he was biting, i really dont think he likes me, I'm his only carerer the only one who does anything with him, the only other person in the house is my adult son but apart from the odd whistle and hello he has nothing to do with Alfie, I am starting to worry as I do get alot of bites on a daily basis.
-
there are some good examples of homemade ones on the thread 'homemade stands & toys', we made ours very cheep and Alfie loves it.
-
What a cute baby, dont worry we all make mistakes on here and none of us get it all right, read some of my posts I really feel a useless owner at times! you will find your routine it just takes time I used to get Alfie out of cage for breakfast but as time has gone on he has to stay in cage and have it there as he is a horror to get back in and i would never be at work on time! Others with more experience will follow on and give you good advice, I really dont no how I would manage with out this site!

Has anyone ever counted how many times they get bitten in a day? Iv had horrible afternoon with Alfie today and wish I had of counted the bites I'v had not drawing blood but dam painful, he flew to me just to bite me, landed on my head so many times when I lift arm to remove him he kinda swings down to bite what ever he can get first, in the end I returned him to the cage and left the room then let him out again but used a perch and managed (after a while) to get him up stairs to my room where we had some one to one which was ok his now back in cage finding his hidden treats, will he ever stop biting me?
-
Well guys here in England it has been a lovely spring day so as I'm getting Alfie used to a smaller cage ready for trip to vets next week, today I put him in cage with seeds for treat which he is loving and for the first time shut the door after short time we went out side put cage on to my garden bench in the sun apart from a plane going over head we had nice afternoon, I was a bit naughty as he seemed happy enough I took this chance to give him a good spray, not too impressed with this but it worked well and he was still my friend when we came in, the problem will be tomorrow when I try to get him to go into this cage which I have been doing every day. So nice to have him out in the sun.

This is really good reading, look forward to reading more
