Hi Iv posted before when let down badly by breeder and had some great replys, thankyou. But I'm struggling at moment not sure if it me being over the top so any replys will be great. 1st Alfie is 17 weeks old still loves one formular feed at night which is fine also still enjoys Cheerios at breakfast which he has out of cage, I'v worked real hard to try to get him onto pellet food by mixing it with seed, soaking it and mixing it with veg, he will eat some of it soft and wet theres always some in his cage and he will break it up, its only small to start with, but seems not to eat it, veg what a night mare, the only way he will eat it is if its cooked, I'v hung all sorts in cage and put in dish just bites it and drops it, took grill out of bottom of cage so he could eat it from the bottom, didn't work, cant find a fruit he likes either have tried pear, apple, grape, kiwi, peach ect again somtimes bites it but never seems to eat it. I spray him every other day and he will stand in a large flat dish with warm water in it and drink it will also drink from spray nozzel which again is fine but never see him drink water in his cage. I weighed him today he is 420 kg. secondly I want him to be out of cage as much as possible which is no problem he is very friendly the problem is when out he just wants to be on me having head scratch which I know you will all be saying how good is that but I cant sit all day doing this if I try to do any tasks he flys after me landing on head, back or shoulder I remove him put him back on perch, have tried gentle stay the same if i try to play with him with toys just puts his head down for tickle, he has a play room with gym ect we go in there but just wants to be on me, end result have to put him back in cage to do anything, he does fly well does not seem nervous at all i use a perch stand which I can take into the room I may be in but just wants to be on me, open the top of cage with loads of toys but wants to be on me even now I have had to return him to the cage as I cannot keep him off the PC while writing this, I'm so glad he loves me but how do I get him to stay on a perch for some of the time, how do I start training him if he wont stay off me, put him on perch sit in front of him talking but flys straight to me head, I remove him this goes on and on. sorry this is long but I'm worried about diet should I add supplements and worried about consistant perching on me if I get up and walk to TV he flys onto me from sofa where I have put him down.

Thankyou for that reply, I'd read that once they reach adult then can turn against main carer in the way they leave their family/nest in the wild, my son who is adult lives with me but his not intrested in alfie and alfie is not to sure about him, most of the time its just me and alfie you have put my mind at rest I beleave we have great bond at the moment I'm sure there will be some changes as he gets more independent but so long as we,re buddies I'm happy

Yes may be that is a better choice, we have a Holland & Barret here so will check it out hadn't throught of going there, thankyou

Thankyou Judygram I agree with you about breeders sadly after the event I find all this out must be honest excite ment took over and really did beleave he would be with me every step of the way, there is always food in cage dish of greens/fruit, dish of water, dish of pellets with small amount of seed and hang fruit and veg daily in fact he is just having his first go at kiwi fruit, only reason I take him out at said meal times is one for social interaction and two he seems to eat cooked veg better, as he is still young I'm trying to be sure he gets some good food, am I likely to pay the price for this when he gets older will he turn aganist me as I am his only carer and keep reading far too much.

Hi guys last post I put on here came back with great replys so hope the same will happen now. My little Alfie African Grey is 15 weeks old today, I had him from what I really beleaved to be a great breeder, I visited 3 times and all was great, the breeder gave me the chance with his full suport to bring Alfie home aged 10 weeks being my first time owning an african grey I throught this would be great and to be honest it has been breeder was in contact with me at first but now I have heard nothing for two weeks no reply to my emails ect, I know your all going to tell me I should not of brought him home so early but I really throught it would bond us better, Alfie is flying now very well down to one feed at bedtime and is easy to handle now my worrys are how do I know if I am feeding him enough of the good stuff? he has a dish of Cherrios for breakfast, lunch time I try to give him moist pellets and tea time I cook mixed veg, now he eats most of this well out of his cage, on his play stand he has a dish with the mixed seed in it which he munches on a couple of times a day, he has pellets in hs cage all day but as there not moist he tends to break them up but not eat them, I also hang corn on the cob, apple, pear, carrott, green veg leaf such as cabbage in his cage, no all at the same time, he loves corn on the cob and does have ago at alot of the foods, he does not eat much in the way of fruit, he seems happy and confident will fly into kitchen if i go in there and leave him in lounge, climbs and perches well, will step up from cage to me in fact from anywhere, guess Im trying to get a rough idear of the amount of food he would be expected to eat in a day, Iv let him stop his formular feeds himself and seems to love having the night one and lets me know its time for it will continue with this for as long as he wants me to.

Hi I'm new on here, my Alfie (African grey) is 13 weeks old his doing fine and started flying this week, my question is after being out of the cage alot during today and this evening when I put him back he spent his time crying, thats the only word I can think of to describe it and going to the bottom of the cage scratching as if trying to dig his way out, do I ignore this behaviour? I did open the door again in the end and he has now had his night feed and is settled, this behaviour also happened yesterday but during the afternoon but I had to go out so not sure how long it went on for, is he being a normal baby and should be given the attention or should I ignore it as there are times he has to be in the cage? any help would be good thanks.

Brought Alfie home yesterday, some of you may not agree but he has come home at 10 weeks and two days of age, my breeder has taught me to hand feed and provided me with his formula and he took all feeds very well so far, he has also tried some apple, grape and strawberry. At present Alfie is in his baby cage which breeder introduced him to he will stay in this for a couple of weeks as he feels safe in here he has one perch low down which he has started to go on but prefers to sleep on the bottom so far, my only problem so far is the bottom of cage does not have grill so keeping paper dry is from his toileting is hard, so any tips on this will be good.
