Hi I cant answer the first question but it leads me to one on tempreture, Im in the uk and any of you who know about our weather will know we,re heading for winter, my alfie lives in my lounge with the family, i'm lucky and dont feel the cold that much how do i know if alfie is warm enough? His 7 months old has lots of free time out of cage but is caged when I'm not here or trying to do certain tasks that he really cant help with, His caged all night and I never have the heating on during the night but his cage is covered over with his blanket, well its a sheet.

This should never be forced on any one, wonder what our birds would type on here...............Alfie says you can clip my wings when you agree to have your legs removed from the knees down............Think about it......... but saying that does not mean I would knock anyone who does have it done because somtimes I understand needs must but I would never be forced into this

How sad my heart goes out to you x

Hi all Alfie is 6 months old now and seems to be doing fine, I watch lots of videos on u tube some by members of this site and thier grays seem to stay on play stands playing or on table tops while learning their latest tricks now my problem is Alfie will not stay anywhere he follows me and likes to be on me which is great until I am doing house work ect when he gets a bit mad with me for moving around so much, I try to put him on perch/playstand or top of cage but he wont stay same when doing training just flys on to me when I am right by him, so does this mean other birds have had their wings clipped, if so is this a good or bad move as I have read its not so good to do it, I end up having to put Alfie back in his cage to get things done when really he should and could be out alot more.

King's Cage Safety Leash: Is this even a good idea???
aw64 replied to FirstPenguin's topic in The GREY Lounge
I'm a new african grey owner and worried about harness but this thing looks terrible to me and can see damage to legs happening, we are working with harness slowly but my alfie still gets to see the sun by the use of a smaller cage which I can use when we are in the garden without the worry of him taking flight, its also getting him used to different sights and sounds, at present my son is making me a flight part on the side of our shed which will give him the chance to be outside with us with a bit more freedom but without the worry of him taking off, I understand it must be nice to take your bird out to the park with you and to allow them to fly but its still restricted flight? and you must make sure they are away from trees ect or there is the chance of them becoming tangled, so as much as I know we all want to provide as much space and freedom as possible for our birds we also have a duty of care, I take my dog to the park off his lead he returns when called which does not by any means mean its fool proof but I will never be trying this with alfie as much as it would be great for him to fly free, they are not dogs, sorry if this upsets anyone its not ment to guess it just rattled me a little. -
I'v just seen your playstand well your birds play stand its ace, is there any chance you can run through how you made it, how high is it ect, remember I'm female!! We have a large brought play gym in spare room but limited to how much time we can spend in there and alfie really does not like being on his own, the gym is too large to have down stairs so somthing like yours would be great, like the casters idear easy to move from lounge to kitchen.

May I ask the age of your birds, alfie is only 18 weeks old and soooo wish he would eat like that

Steps up really good from in his cage, on top of door or where ever he is, steping down also good but always decides when he is staying with me if he thinks I'm going to move him off me from my hand he goes up my arm and will end up in the middle of my back where I'm sure he knows I can't reach! lol
-
Well just weighed Alfie I must add this was not a simple task lol but he is 433g which I was pleased about he is 18 wks old!

Iv just sat watching Alfie age 18 wks old in his cage with a carrott which had still got the green leaf part on it, I had pushed it through bars of cage and within a very short time he has diced the carrott into hundreds of small pieces dont think he has ate any but he sure has had fun, must start and get some pics on here of some of the funny things he does. The joys of owning African Greys!

Hi everyone, can anyone give me some tips please, Iv got Alfie 18 weeks old on Saturday very friendly little chap we have started some basic training mainly when on my lap, will do a foot shake (hand shake) to my command of 'how do you do' and will do half turn responds better to head scratch rather than treats at the moment, my question is how do I get him to stay on a perch to do these things as soon as i put him on perch he flys to me I put him back and this goes on and on, his even mastered getting round to the middle of my back knowing I cannot reach him, its funny but would love to do some training with my hands free to be able to introduce target and clicker. Watched lots of vidios all birds seem to stay on perch, they cant all have had wings clipped.........can they, I dont want to do this I love to see him fly but would love to see him stay from time to time.

Thanks steve Misty sounds great, least Alfies not talking yet so cant call me or ask to come out, we tend to have meal times mainly started so I could monitor food intake but always leave alsorts in his cage, I like the water idear with vitamin D and Calcium thats one will be starting, as I write this alfie is sat ontop of kitchen door and allowing me to write this mind you he has been out all morning so prob time for a rest! With the vitamins how much do you put into an average size glass of water and do you add vitamins every day?

Thankyou for reply, alfie has no fear of any new toys but at present prefers me to them, do have problems with treats though as he is such a funny eatter he will take them off me but just drops them!
