  1. Yay for Barnaby!! :)

Little Chickie was hatched on 8/17 and came home at the beginning of December, so she was just shy of 4 months when she came home. She had been down to only 1 feeding a day for a while, but my breeder was also concerned with letting her properly fledge before she came home and we trimmed her wings. She had to be able to fly and make good "choices" about landing spots. I know it's controversial, but she is currently clipped just enough to limit her flight distance. She can still fly, but she cannot get a lot of lift or fly long distances. After talking with my breeder we decided that would be the best idea while she's young and we're working on building our relationship. Probably when she's older I'll let her grow out and be fully flighted. I can't remember, is Grimm close enough that you will drive to go get him, or will he have to be shipped to you?

  2. It's a pretty common thing, I think, that all our birds hear-just say "It's ok" whenever your baby seems uncertain about something and they will learn to trust you and that it is going to be ok because you're there.
  3. Like LuvParrots said, definitely keep pellets available all the time. Chickie has a bowl in her cage and a bowl on her tree stand that are full all the time. As far as other stuff, we give her snacks periodically throughout the day and ususally a little bit of our dinner, if it meets her standards. And, unfortunately, getting pooped on just comes with the territory. You can try and "potty train" your bird, there are threads on here about it, but usually when I play with Chickie on my lap I just have a big towel under her and deal with it. I wouldn't recommend withholding food or water to avoid getting pooped on.
  4. I think that the next step would be to try and go see her. That way you will know if you and her "click." Also, you could ask for the breeder's info and speak to them if you have any questions.
  5. Everyone has given you great advice so far about the kitchen. I second everything they've said. As far as the vacuum, I believe that if you don't make it a big deal, then it won't be a big deal. My Chickie just came home at the beginning of December. The first time I vacuumed the carpet with her on her stand I just went about it like it wasn't a big deal at all...and that's how she took it too. I even vacuum around her tree with her on it and she could care less. Every bird is different though, so it will be more about learning how your little one reacts at first. That's one of the bonuses of getting a baby, I think, is that you can introduce them to all kinds of new things that they don't have any associations with, negative especially, like a rehomed bird may. If you're worried or anxious, they pick up on it-so, just be yourself and go about life as ususal and they won't know any difference. Chickie accepts whatever I'm doing because it's not a big deal so it's a nonevent. I'm definitely no expert, but that's the philosophy I have taken with my little girl so far, and it has worked pretty well. Oh, there's NEVER a dumb question!! Don't ever worry about that. How could you take advantage of all the expertise, myself NOT included, here if you never asked?? I am a newbie myself to greys and I have never seen anyone here get mad about questions, they are always more than happy to help and share info.
  6. So is she only nipping at your hand when she is put in her cage out of her "routine" times? If so, it may help to take her in and out of her cage more, besides just the normal times. Maybe mixing up her routine a bit will help her to accept it more. Hope it helps.
  7. So sorry to hear this happened and best of luck nursing Oboe back to health. Keep us posted.
  8. Hey there! So sad to hear you had pneumonia. :S. But at least you're feeling better. Miss Chickie is doing well. Sitting on her tree right now eating some Harrison's Nachos Frijoles...seems to like it so far. She's getting into a little nippy independent stage, so we're working on that. How's Barnaby doing? How soon before Grimm joins the fam?? :)

  9. The down feathers somehow even have the ability to teleport-Chickie has never been in the basement, but YET there they are-those little white downy feathers. LOL
  10. Birdhouse and Wingy have a good idea. My Chickie's favorite toy is simply pieces of fleece that I have cut into strips and sewn buttons on. I sewed them on really tight so it takes her a while to pop them off. Maybe Took would like that too??
  11. He he he...love your story Ray. Corky left a deposit and so did you!! Don't worry birdistheword, the right baby will find it's way to you.
  12. Welcome to the forum! Her name is just adoreable!! The time does go so slow, when I was waiting for my Chickie I thought I would just explode, but it's all worth it the day you bring them home.
  13. Welcome, and thank you for saving those two sweet babies!!
  14. He's getting big and handsome Sorry you haven't been feeling well
  15. It's not funny except that it is!! I hated to laugh at her torment, but it was just too funny!!
  16. Puppy is too cute!!! Too bad the fids aren't such a fan
  17. Good to know!! I had never heard that. So, does anyone know why it's poisonous??? Is it only dangerous if they chew on it-which, of course they will because what don't they chew on...lol
  18. Keep us posted on how it goes
  19. I have heard it said before that baby toys are ok-maybe because if a baby is going to most likely put it in it's mouth then it's probably ok for our fids too? Not 100% sure, but that's my thinking. Hopefully someone with more experience will say for sure. My favorite thing to do, toy wise, is to go look at all the toys and try to figure out how to make them at home. But that's just me.
