My avian vet has told me anytime I want I can have my parrots tested for their chips. It is a simple and easily done test and I also have my pug tested regularly for her's.

Looking forward to seeing your aviary Carol!

I have three parrots and each is different in doing what I ask of them. My CAG, I can ask to step up and he will oblige willingly and I can put him wherever I please. My zon does not like me to touch him and so with a little nudge and verbal request from me he will go back to his cage and sit on the door of his cage and after a few verbal requests and gestures he will go into his cage for the night. Now my TAG is a whole other story she is very independent and if she had her way would sleep outside of her cage. Her cage is only for getting food according to her. I do a little threatening and some chasing and when she sees that I've had enough, she will step up and go into her cage. I refer to think of her flying around as her wanting to exercise a little before being locked in for the night rather than her being obstinate and unruly. Of course, if all else doesn't work, I just note where Ana Grey is and turn off the lights and go get her and put her in her cage. Birds do not normally move around once the lights are off or if it is dark.

Very observant of you to notice this about Lucy and very smart of Lucy to make herself very clear to you. I am looking forward to hearing more about Lucy. She is definitely a keeper and very lucky to have such an observant parront!

I have not done anything yet in the way of an aviary. Still looking for ideas and suggestions. Hoping that some one who already has an aviary can give me some ideas.

I certainly do not want to test whether or not Ana Grey wants to go outside or not. She sits by the patio door when I am in that room so I do believe it is to go out. She would enjoy it until she got hungry and then wonder why I didn't come get her!!!!!! I like the fact that if someone finds a bird/animal they can take it to a vet and have the bird scanned for a chip free of charge. The fact that it is considered a crime if someone does not try to find a lost pet's true owner. I know my avian vet always asks for the origin of my birds when I first bring a new one in.

I am very paranoid about my parrots being lost. Accidentally flying out the door. I know I would be devastated as I know Ana Grey who loves to fly would be out the door so happy about her freedom. She always looks out the door when I go out and I find her sitting right next to the door when I come back inside. Just waiting for me to make a mistake and not close that door quick enough.... she so wants to fly outside. I remember the recent story someone posted about a grey and macaws that where stolen from someone's backyard. I also found in the newspaper today a story about purebred dognapping on the increase because of the hard economical times. I was encouraged by the words that said "Pilfered pooches with microchips are considered by the legal system as stolen property, making a stronger case for criminal charges." Why wouldn't this also apply to any microchipped animal??? i.e. my greys. I always notice how everyone wants you to identify your grey when they find one. Well since all greys basically look alike unless they are banded and I understand a lot of people are removing their grey's band, visual identification is impossible but microchipping is a permanent identification and makes me feel much more confident about being able to reclaim my parrots. Others thoughts on this are welcome. How do you identify your grey if he/she takes a venture outside and someone else finds it and is reluctant to just take your word that "hey that's my grey!!!!"

I have read that raw sweet potatoes are fine for our parrots. When in doubt check the internet.

I am a senior citizen and live alone and do not do very much in the backyard anymore. Mainly BBQs on the porch. I was thinking of attaching the aviary whichever one I get to the house and using the birdroom windows as ins and outs. I have a huge fear of bird-nappers. I do not intend to put food in the aviary as I only want the aviary for sunshine time and sunbathing for the birdies. If they are thirsty and hungry they would have to come into the birdroom through the window and back to their cages. Pretty sneaky huh!!! It's winter so perhaps I will just keep looking.

Oh yes please take your grey to an avian vet and have him checked out. If this were my grey, I would not do any extra clipping until a vet has given an opinion. My young grey was very clumsy when I first got him but in the two months he has been here, he has improved in leaps and bounds.

Okay family, I need some advice. I want to have an outdoor aviary for my three parrots. As I have said many, many, many times, I am not very handy. I am horribly atrocious at making/building anything. So advice is needed. What do you thing of this aviary? Has anyone seem or have one of these???? Help!!! http://www.petprokennelstore.com/mob4bica.html

My grey is 3 years old and still bobs the head and drops the wings. To me it is her being very happy and delighted. She mainly does these things when I am talking to her or when I first see her in the morning.

Very concerned first time owner ... a lot of questions !!!

bivsw, we would love to see some pictures of your new grey. Pretty please!!!!! What have you named your sweet grey? I find that my greys are very sensitive to my feelings. They know when I am happy and when I am agitated. Your calm and loving attitude will go far with your new friend. Welcome to the Grey family! -
Hi Georgiesmum, nice to see you!!!!! George looks great as do your other fids. Hope to hear more from you!!!!

Hi Joerawlings, congratulations on your re-homed Blue Front. I have had my Louie (BFA) for about a year and he and I are still getting to know each other. He was a little wild when I first got him and he will not let me touch him, but he tells me "I love you" and follows me around my home, so I guess we have a mutual understanding of our relationship. Hopefully he will come around and let me cuddle him some day. I will wait, I am a very patient lady. I look forward to seeing some pictures of your new friend and hearing more about her. What is her name?

Very nice playstand and I'm glad Elegua is happy with it! Wish I was handy, but alas I am not!!!

Great picture of your family and little grey! I am happy, happy, happy for you all, especially this sweet grey who finally has a loving home!!!!! Hooray!!!

Roscoe is a fine looking little guy! I personally do no clip my parrots, I have three and they are all flighted. I find that they are more independent and confident if they can get around on their own. My parrots don't scream for me, they just come looking for me if I am in another room. I love the sound of their wings catching the air when they are flying. Priceless!! I have ceiling perches and boings around my home and my feathered friends love to sit on these and keep an eye on the activities of the house.

Perry is quite handsome. Looking forward to hearing more about him and Shyloh!

My fids all like safflower seeds, less fat than sunflower seeds and good for your little buddies. Glad to hear Ozzy is doing so well! And pctures please we LOVE pictures!!!

Yes, Dayo does sound like Dan. Perhaps some of our members with older greys can answer this question for you Pikachu. I too would like to hear what others have to say about this. As for Sterling Gris, he is a very sweet grey. He is quiet and very gentle. He reminds me of a gentle giant as he is so big but very sweet. He will be the "boss" of the roost as soon as he gets older, the other two know he will not back down now and are having to respect his grandness.

My Ana Grey has a couple of voices. Some things she says are very "mechanical" sounding but very clear. Some are in a high pitched voice which is also clear. My male zon has a high voice. I don't believe either of my parrots sound like me as most people in the telephone ask if they can talk to the "lady of the house" as if I were a child. My 7 month old CAG is making sounds but they are more middle of the road. So I am also interested in what others have to say as my fids to me do not sound like me. And no one who has been here when they do talk say they sound like me.

Hi Tucker and family! By the way, how much does Tucker weigh?? From what you have said Tucker is certainly a character. I'm looking forward to hearing more about him!
-
Welcome to you and Elvis!!!! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your new grey.

Oh so very happy for you, I can't wait until Wednesday. Fingers crossed that things go very smoothly for this sweet grey.
