Yes Judy, Louie first landed on my head or back and then shoulder. It has to all be on Louie's time and at his speed. As long as no one tries to touch him, Louie is a happy camper. Louie now lands on my grandson, the young man next door just about everyone who enters the house. As long as he is in charge and no one touches him he is happy. This is Louie's song:

So what has Louie been up to????? (see video) Louie has also become a shoulder parrot, which for all of you who know Louie, is a great accomplishment! First on to the shoulder............. But then the nibble............... and then, of course, the NO!!!!!! So Louie is advancing by leaps and bounds into a trusting and possessive zon!!!!! My daughter, Donna, is becoming a real fan of Louie's and has said that if he learns to say, "Hello Gorgeous" when she enters the room, Louie will have a new forever home!!!! LOL!!!

Well if Gracie does find you the right lady, we all (Grey Forum family) expect an invite to the shindig!!!!! LOL!!!

Thinking of adding a new CAG to my Flock...help?
Luvparrots replied to Ajax4289's topic in Rescue Bird Haven
So Ajax are you going to purchase this grey and give her the loving home she desires????? -
Congrats Jeff on Gracie's accomplishment. Now be truthful, did you teach the wolf whistle as a contact call or so Gracie can attract ladies for you?????? LOL!!!!

I don't have this problem with my parrots but if I did, I would hang the new toy right next to or with the old toy. See if your grey will interact with the new and old combined. If so, I would then remove the older toy after awhile.

Great question Shelly. I too live alone and have three parrots so I have thought about and figured out what to do in each situation. I have three easy to assemble collapsible large travel cages that are stored in the birdroom and if there is a fire, because smoke is so deadly to our feathered friends; I would just slide open the bird room window and pop the birdies in their travel cages out the window onto the ground. I have an emergency travel parrot bag which has freeze dried veggies, pellets, seeds and water packed in it at all times. Out the window it would go too. My Lily, pug, is usually close to me so she is the first out the window or door. I always keep blankets and water in my jeep which is usually full of gas so I have a quick way to get out of the area in case of a flood. I can see the Columbia River a highway and two streets to the south. In case of power outage, I have a pet friendly propane emergency heater and cooking facilities also within quick reach. Lots of lanterns and flashlights and candles and emergency radio. I have family in the area to stay with if necessary. If I am not home I have neighbors who are friendly with my parrots and who have handled them and have access to my home if necessary. They would get my pets out of my home and would watch out for them. Same neighbors would also watch my pets if I am quickly whisked to the hospital at least until my kids in the area can come get my pets. In case of my death, my son is looking to BBQ my parrots and my daughter says she will be posting on the Greyforums for possible new parronts for my flock. That's right, my children are not parrot lovers!!!!! They are cat lovers!!! LOL!!

-Great videos. My zon loves to swing like Slater does. Such fun. I do have to get some of the netting for my covered porch. My birds would love to be out flying around!

Louie, the zon, is also a biter. There is a video in the Amazon Room of Louie just biting away on me. He never really bites hard now. I have just always told him no bites and tossed him off if he didn't listen to my warning. Now he still nibbles on me but does not bite too hard. It has taken a long time for Louie, my re-home, to trust me. It is only recently that he flies to my shoulder for a while. He loves ears!

On the question of flight or walk, it probably depends a lot on the age of a parrot. Mine are fairly young. Louie, the zon, is just 4 years old, Ana Grey, 3 1/2 years and Sterling is just 10 months. The older ekkie I re-homed was a floor walker all the time. Sully was at least 11/12 years old, perhaps much older. My flock do land on the floor occasionally and take a few steps but can fly almost straight up to a hanging ceiling perch no problem. They are all very strong flyers and are out all day long going from room to room. My flock is very lean and healthy with all this flying around. Although I have a pug, Lily is 11 years old so not much of a threat to my birdies. In fact, my pug will normally leave a room if the flock shows up so she can have peace and quiet as my parrots are a noisy and boisterous bunch.

Louie loved this video Dave. Thanks!!

I understand hemp seed is also a good diet supplement for plucking birds. My next door neighbor has an ekkie that hemp seed is helping and I understand that a cockatoo in the area is also on hemp seed and it seems to help with the plucking. Check the internet or ask your avian vet about hemp seed for your parrot.

Love Misty's video! Had a great laugh and a big smile!!!

Each of my parrots has gone into the avian vet for a wellness check when I first got them. They were also micro-chipped then. Each was declared healthy and then micro-chipped. Their avian vet now has a "gauge" and a record of each one. I am retired and spend oodles of time with my parrots. I do all the cleaning and such for each one so I am pretty aware of what they eat, play and all their actions are everyday. Each has only been to the vet for their original check-up and micro-chipping. Each has only exhibited excellent health so I have not had they re-checked but if I ever notice one is not well or "acting" ill, I would be popping that bird to the vet asap!

I have three flighted parrots and my zon is a re-home and has just started to want to be on my shoulder. My two greys I have had since they were weaned. So my zon, Louie, has more or less had at least my grey, Ana Grey, 3 1/2 years, as a guide to follow. My home has always been full of ceiling perches and boings with hanging toys and such to land on. My cabinets and shelf tops full of family pictures and nic naks so no real other landing places are available expect my couches and chairs. Louie has always just been very watchful and wanting to learn and please. So when I talk to him, he just seems to be listening and understand what I say and want. Of course, it takes lots of patience and consistency to get things understood.

I have three parrots who don't go the bottom of their cages, so no grates. In the beginning my youngest CAG was at the bottom but as he has grown into a big boy, he no longer scratches around on the bottom. Of course, if any of my parrots develop the need to be floor walkers, the grates are still around.
-
My zon is fully flighted and likes to be with me also. He is 4 years old. I have hanging perches and boings in each of my rooms of my home and my parrots have learned to sit there if they want in the room I am in. There are toys and foraging devices at each perch/boing and they seem content as long as they can see me. Because my zon and other parrots are flighted, I just flick them off my shoulder if I need they to "go away". Otherwise as Judy says, just divert Chili Pepper away from you if you don't want him on your shoulder. Clipping him will not make the desire to be with you go away. You will have to find ways to distract him so be creative as it is apparent that he loves his parront.
