I think yes. I recently heard Alfie "talking" to Jackdaws in their language and I wondered if they were understanding each other. I think Spock most definitely will understand the tone and the mood, if nothing else. How sweet - I love listening to doves cooing....well done Spock - you're a smart one!

Hi Cheshirecat and welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here and that you have joined us before your new addition comes along!! There is an awful lot to learn and this is the right place to do it!! It's great too, that you have read books etc, but their is no substitute for experience, and your friend will hopefully tell you all that the books won't - the mess, the noise, the destruction - the mayhem!!! Lol - just kidding, not too much mayhem!!! I too found my way to this site from Andrew and Tui's Youtube page - their story is so sad. It's good that you're here - any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, there are many very knowlegable members here, and we are all eager to help in any way we can. David and I went unashamedlly childless to the pictures to see Shrek2 and heehawed all the way through it, much to the disgust of the rest of the theatre who sat unbelievably quiet through out the whole film!!! It's dead funny - Alfie immitates Tia, our chihuahua and Megan,the bigger dog. She can do them both simultaneously and anyone coming to the house and hearing them all, thinks they are coming into a pack of 4 dogs and not just two!! We don't get many visitors...............!

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Jill. It's best to ask these question before getting a parrot and not after. Francis may make less noise as he settles in , or he may make more. Alfie is noisier than I thought she would be, she goes through her full repertoire twice a day, sometimes it's bang in the middle of when we would like quiet. Francis may eventually give up this noise that annoys your husband so, and he may replace with a noise you find even more irratating. I would agree 100% with Dan on this occasion - hand Francis back sooner rather than later, it will be a little easier on him.

Noooo Jan, you mustn't stop it to try to video it - that would be not good - Tobie would not like it! We'll just have to hope there is someone else around who can work the video camera the next time you and Tobie have a farting session!!!

Alfie seems to be on a roll at the minute - lot's of new things coming out!!

Hat's off to you Jill for finding the thing that Harvey loves!! Alas, I have tried ginger and it get's lobbed to the dogs with most everything else. However, she has just taken a liking to banana after two years of trying, so I will keep trying the ginger - fresh, pureed, powdered, grated - whatever!!! You never know! As for getting her to eat her veg, the thing that makes it absolutely irresistable to Alfie..............is eating it off of our plate!! So now David gets his tea with a genourous helping of Alfie veg!!!! Works a charm!!!

That is so sad Jay, I certainly am not surprised that they never forget, but it is just tragic to think these birds either will always miss their old family if it was a good experience or will never forget a bad one. Am I right in saying Stockolm syndrome is where a hostage develops positive feelings for and in some cases idolizes their captors? I wish more people would realise the impact they have on these creatures before they take them on, you see first hand, Jay and Maggie, the damage that is caused by an impulsive action, and we've seen it lately in threads here, how a person realises they don't actually want a bird, so just get rid of it. Tragic.

Jan this is just priceless - I would love to see a video of this if you could somehow manage it? You and Tobie burping and farting together - LOL!!! Alfie and I play guess the noise - she makes it, I guess what it is - I think it's more in my head than hers but we both seem to enjoy it!!
