Great idea, have to check with our local cigar store to see if they have any boxs they wish to part with, as long as the boxs did not contain unwrapped cigars before I would think these boxs were safe and fun for the parrots. Carolyn & Mika

Even at 8 months Mika still enjoys being fed his baby pablum warm once a day, he eats it for breakfast every day. There are so many varieties of pablum out there. Carolyn & Mika

There are a lot of us out there that will face the same situation you are in, start talking to people now ask around for places that are near you home. We have members that are in Ireland that may no of places that would make you feel more at ease. Please talk to your Vet about how you feel, maybe ask around the local pet stores they may no of places in your area. I have gone over this many times in my mind as well, and is something that every responsible owner should think about, because none of us are getting any younger. But that being said neither you nor I are going any where soon:laugh: but just go out there and get the information for many years down the line. It will put your mind at rest. Carolyn & Mika

Dan is so right with the time and consistency, with out exception. Many people think that, once won't hurt I'll just leave him on my head or shoulder or maybe your busy right at that moment. But if you don't want a particular behavior then don't allow it at ALL. Carry through with every lesson you intend the bird to learn. Consistency for ALL that handle the bird not just you. They are very smart and will soon learn who will let them away with bad behavior or unwanted behavior. Trust me I have learned lol Carolyn & Mika

I do not no where you are from Davy, but there are many great Rescue Santuarys out there, in the event this should happen and a family member could not step in, you could consult with the vet the bird has been seen by and he/she might have ideas in your area, and be able to point you in the right direction. A family member would be the best for the bird if it could be someone he no's and the person is willing to take on the responsibility, because depending on the age of this bird it will be a great loss for him/her and he/she will need a lot of attention to feel secure again with getting over it's loss. Hope this helps, maybe you could give us soom more details and we could offer you more ideas. Carolyn & Mika

As Mika has a no seed diet, the very best treat for him is sunflower seeds, for training I use the ones not in the shell because I dont want to give him anything to play with while we are training. And they are small enough that they don't fill him up. We have only been working so far on colours so far but we do play around with numbers, like showing him 1 object then add another and telling him 2 then adding a 3rd. right now we go no higher then 5, we use plastic bottle caps for the counting. Have you tried to contact any Avian Vets in your area for any parrots that have been brought in by any new people that fit your Congo's description in case someone has him and has decided not to turn him in? Making your situation known to all vets, they may keep an eye open for you. I am so sorry, I can only guess how you feel. Carolyn & Mika

Post edited by: Carolyn, at: 2008/12/04 22:23

Both my husband and I work full time jobs, Mika is alone during the day but I do leave a TV on with a timer. The TV comes on about an hour after we leave and goes off 3 hours later to give him a break to play or do what ever he wants for a couple of hours then the radio on a timer comes on low till we get home. He has had this schedule 5 days a week for the last 5 months, and he is just fine with this. We do leave the cage door open all evening till his bedtime, and in the kitchen with us during dinner. Hope this helps a little, and look forward to hearing all about Joey. Carolyn & Mika

We practice in the dining room, I cover the table with a plastic cloth (solid colour) used only for training. No other toys or treats are there, and then I just use unshelled sunflower seeds, which Mika no's are in a container that only I have, when when we started there was only 1 block on the table the red one (so not much to play with except the one block) then just kept showing it to him and telling him red block and gave him only one seed. I keep moving the one block around the table and keep repeating it. He plays with it, but everytime I say red block he gets one seed. After a week I introduced the blue block, kept on telling him blue block each time I picked it up and he got 2 seeds, then back to red block, one seed. At this point he started to get the idea himself that if he picked up or started to push one around I told him the colour and he got the treat of one or two seeds. I just keep going from there, we now have dropped the reward for red, blue and green he only gets for yellow (2 seeds). We just keep going over this time and time again mixing it up now. After the training is over the container of seeds are gone and so is the table cloth till the next day. He never see's the seed container or any sunflower seeds unless we are training. So he has started to put 2 and 2 together. I found that when we work there are no other distractions around, no people, no music, no dog or cat. No paying attention means you get to see the treats, but get none, they go back into the container. Carolyn & Mika

I will be working with orange, black and white next then going on to pink and purple. We are working on the alphabet but again he doesn't talk yet but WHEN HE DOES lol if he cant say it he can spell it:laugh: I find that keeping him a very busy bird is keeping him out of trouble and he looks forward to our learning sessions as much as his playtime. We spend 30 min a day on learning every day. Carolyn & Mika

After weeks and weeks Mika has finally got all 4 basic colours down pat. When asked to find one he walks around and either stands on it or trys to pick up or push it towards you. We will be starting next week to start to introduce other colours, as we started with the four primary ones. I am so excited with this little guy, he may not be able to talk yet, but is learning. He will be 8 months this month. Ahh how time flys, Carolyn & Mika

Eating there own poop is usually a diet related disorder called Coprophagia. It's usually caused by a bad diet, where your bird is not getting the vitamins and minerals his body needs. This can also turn into a bad habit once the diet is corrected... they will continue to munch on it by habit. You should definitely take your baby to an avian vet to make sure that he hasn't made himself sick by eating his feces. You may need to have them run a couple of tests to make sure. Good luck Carolyn & Mika

Congradulations to both of you, Michael you will make a wonderful Dad. Gregory is one luckey little guy;) Carolyn & Mika

I am wondering AnnMarie why you are looking for a clean cut answer to questions that are not clean cut! You posted 3 times to different posts on 10/18/2008, your posts - Bird breeding except for the preserving the species should be illegel - Bird Breeding is cruel and unnecessary - I hope they make bird breeding illegal Why now are you trying to define the difference between a bad or good breeder, when you are so against bird breeding?? Carolyn & Mika
