People just DON'T listen when you ask at first nicely to please stay away from the bird, they seem to have this fixation to stick there fingers in the cage, then when they get bit they have a surprized look on there face. But go figure, how many people see a "wet paint" sign and just have to touch to see? "Thin ice" but have to put there foot on it to try, and the list goes on. Human nature you just to love it, and have a few bandages around, for the ones that just don't listen. Carolyn & Mika

I think that you are a wonderful unselish person that is able to reach out and try to find the best home out there for Tango. It appears you are making this decision with Tango's best interest at heart. And nobody out there should cast the first stone with out taking a long good look inside themselves. I truly hope you the best, and I would be first in line to try and help you, but I am in Canada and they have made it very hard to bring a bird across the border with paper work and the fees attached, trust me I have checked this out a few weeks ago. Again I wish you the best. Carolyn & Mika

When you consider having the old cage sandblasted, powder coated and the time and cost, I feel that you might be farther ahead to get a new one. Also with the new one you will have peace of mind. Carolyn & Mika

Thats a great idea, will have to try it:laugh: Carolyn & Mika

Shanlung, You are an inspiration to all of us, with your time, love and devotion to your birds. Carolyn & Mika:)

I am thinking what you have just described, is just as Dave and Dan said - a good old fashion birdie temper tantrum:angry: . You were preparing her favorite food and she wanted some NOW. I have found with my grey, that waiting for something is not one of there virtues - when they want it they want it NOW. And to be taken away from what they like at that moment will cause them to rebel in the only way they have to show great displeasure, biting and refusing to leave. Carolyn & Mika

Great post Dave, as always. Carolyn & Mika

Mika arrived to us at 3 months, I started his step up training on his second day of arrival. Everytime he was out of the cage we would practice our "step up then praise and treat", I also added the step down when I placed him back to where I wanted and again praise and treat. I also started the step up while he was in the cage so as he would get very used to my hands in the cage and then placing him back in the cage with a step down. For the first couple of weeks there was always lots of praise and treats and slowly I started to not give treats evety time but still lots of praise. In most of the books or papers I have read is that step up is not only the most important part of your training it is also a building block of where you are going with his training. So most important. Now 5 months later I very seldon even say step up, I just offer my hand to where ever he is and he already has his foot raised to jump on. Now that he is getting a little older and a lot bolder there are times when he will move away from me when my hand is offered, but with a stern "No please step up" he on and off we go. Hope this helps Carolyn & Mika

6:16pm Friday night, and still trying to dig out, snow is slowing down but still coming down. Between the snow falling and the wind blowing car in driveway completley covered, just one white bump where the driveway should be. Then the snow plow goes by and plugs up the end of the drive again. Oh well welcome to Canada the great white north:laugh: Carolyn & Mika

It is 3PM and the snow is still coming down - so what are we doing, digging, digging, digging and It will go on for the next few hours with the wind adding to it. Whats Mika doing, ahh just sitting in the window watching nice and warm. Grrrrrrr should be adble to earn his keep:angry: Carolyn& Mika

Well it's 5:20 am on Friday and waiting for the snow to hit here too, Like Erika and Goralka said we are expecting to be hit hard today and then again on Sunday. Did all the shopping yesterday, so lots of food in the house. As far as work goes, have to play that by ear and the weather. If it does turn into a snow day all the better:woohoo: got lots to do at home and I no Mika would love to spend the whole day just hanging with his Mom, and watching out the window while she shovels the snow:angry: and more snow, and more snow. The first real snow storm the other day Mika was sitting on his window perch just watching the big snow flakes coming down, he was facinated by them and when they started to land on the window he tried to see what they were by pecking the glass. Can you imagine by next week this time Christmas will be over, my how time flies. Carolyn & Mika

DavidH, been there done that! With all the reading I had done I purchased a cage that was to small, we had him for 3 weeks and I had to go and get another one. The one that Dave posted is the size we ended up getting and its great, the play gym on top provides Mika with a place to play and move around all he likes. The large door is a godsend to getting things in and out and also for him. Best of luck, finding the one you want. Carolyn & Mika

The Aviator Harness comes with a DVD that is very good, on how to start with the harness and the follow through. We watched this video many times before I even introduced the harness to Mika, by doing this and not pushing he enjoyed the challange of the harness and still does. It just takes time and work. You are really in a catch 22 position, I can see where you are coming from. You might have to go to your local animal shelter and get some advice on how and where to go from here. The responcibility is on this women to PROVE the ownership of this bird before you should return it to her. I would also maybe seek some legal advise as how they feel, if this women was to push the issue. I guess only you can figure out how far you might want to take this, but usually going with a gut feeling is your first clue. Best of luck to both of you Carolyn & Mika

So we get a little off track once and awhile it lightens the mood:laugh: It still doesn't make everyone here or visiting devert from the original subject - Micro chipping I am now on a fact finding mission to find out as much as I can and will post all that I find. I have e-mails out to several top Avian vets for there thoughts and also to find out how the SPCA and humane societies are doing with this very new idea and if they have any numbers on if it is working. Keeping in mind this is all going to be gathered in Ontario Canada and may not have any thing to do with any other part of the world. Carolyn & Mika

Mika is right footed for holding his food, but tends to step up using his left first. This is very interesting to here about all the different birds. Would steping up be that we offer our right or left hand to them so they choose the foot that is closest to the hand offered - Carolyn & Mika
-
My heart goes out to you and I think you are just wonderful to even consider this. I do not have any experience with either rescue or re-homed birds but there are so many people here that will be able to give you good solid advice on how to handle a situation like you have. Best of luck Carolyn & Mika

Hey great idea, going to try that to;) Not even going to touch that Dave shot:woohoo: lol Carolyn & Mika
