So nice to see a parront so serious and devoted to their life long commitment to their fid. Can't wait to hear that your baby is home and safe with you. I hope quarantine isn't too traumatic for her.

Keeping a good thought for Ollie's continuing improvement. e hugs for everyone ((((( )))))

Just want to introduce my new family member
Acappella replied to Dooble's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Welcome to you and to Dooble. Where are you that you can have her (is Dooble a her) in a screened in porch in November? -
Do you have anyone who can come in and sit with her today?

Dorian is like Ana Grey, he looks to me for cues on whether to be upset. If I say "Ooooh, big noise eh?" he'll often reply with an oooooh. We are close to a small airport and sometimes a small plane or helicopter will fly low overhead, or someone will drive by with a noisy vehicle when we're hanging on the front porch. Same thing, if I just acknowledge the noise in a calm voice and manner he'll take his cue from me and it won't phase him. Try to get up and be there to reassure her before the noise starts in the morning so that it doesn't catch her off guard and she'll probably be fine.

Welcome to you and Ozzy to the forum. He's a cutie!

Happy Hatchday GrecieMae. I hope it involves lots of new toys, treats, and swinging!

I think Parrotdise Perch has a store in Calgary. Check them out. Their customer service is good.

Putting the cage in a low traffic zone is ok as long as the cage will be used mostly for sleeping. If your grey was going to be in its cage a lot you'd want to put it in a higher traffic zone because birds want to be in a place where the rest of their flock is. That being said, they need 10-12 hours dark sleep time each day to be healthy and happy. Some member use smaller sleep cages, some, like me, have the cage in its own room where I can turn out the lights and put him to bed. Having stands and playgyms throughout the house is ideal because then your fid can follow you around the house. Are you planning on leaving your bird flighted so that it can follow you around on its own? I don't have kids, but I do know that often birds don't like the sometimes frantic energy of small children. Do you think your kids can be taught to be gentle and quiet around your bird? I'm in Lindsay Ontario. Canada's a big country, where are you? Dorian came from a place near Barrie Ontario called Lorwill Aviaries. I have no idea if they're still breeding, but the phone # still comes back to the same person's name. The # is 705-726-5694. The name is Lorraine Shantz. I got this info from Dorians Hatch Certificate. I got him second hand so I didn't meet them personally, but he came with a whole file of info on how to care for him (which his first owners didn't pay much attention to), so that says some good things about them. Good luck in your search. Many members here travel with their birds. The only time I travel with Dorian is when I'm taking him to the groomers. I use a cockatiel sized cage for this purpose, and also for taking him outside in the spring/summer for some sun. There are some options meant specifically for travel. Take a look at the website for a Canadian store called Parrotdise Perch. Also look into the aviator harness, especially if you're planning on getting a baby. Babies are generally easier to train to take the harness. I'm lucky in that Dorian's groomer also boards birds, so that if I ever ever get to travel again, which frankly doesn't seem likely, I'd have a place for him. If I go into Toronto for a couple of days I have someone come into the house to change his water and his food, and I leave him with plenty of shredable toys and instructions on how to turn my music system on and off for the radio. The reasoning behind not having them surrounded by windows is that, as a prey animal, they have to be on the alert for predators at all times. All the activity going on outside a window might stop them from being able to relax in their cage. It's generally good to have a least one side of a cage facing a wall so they don't have to be on alert from all sides. Hope this helps. My advice is to read the stickies in the different forum rooms. There's lots of good info there. Welcome to the forum.

I don't cover Dorian because he has his own room, so I can just turn out the lights and draw the curtains to make it dark for him. He'll wake up in the morning sometimes beore I'm ready to go get him, but he just chatters away to himself until I go and get him, and he's always happy as a clam to see me, so he doesn't mind me being a little slow in the mornings. I couldn't cover his cage anyway because I can't reach the top of his cage! HRH sounds like she's enjoying the new routine. I hope Joe is feeling better.

No, DDorian doesn't do that. I've taught him that a "kiss" is him touching his beak to my chin or nose specifically because our mouths are not safe for them. Try keeping your mouth closed and re directing her to your chin, with lots of praise when she does what you want. Is she trying to feed you?

I already replied to your other post, but I'll say it again, welcome to you and Dwight to our forum. There's lots of reading to do in each room's stickies. It's been pretty quiet around here the past couple of weeks. Nice to see some new members coming in with their greys.

They pretty much talk when they're feeling safe and happy. Also, I know my Dorian still mostly only speaks when I'm in another room. He uses speech to bring me to him. Once I'm in the same room as him he doesn't need to speak any more. Dwight will probably start to talk when he's feeling safe and comfortable in his new home. If he is really familiar with you that will speed up the process. It's good to hear about an older grey being taken care of by the next generation of a family. Thank you for taking in Dwight, and welcome to the forum!

I don't use a harness either, but I know from others here who do that the most common full body harness, the aviator harness, comes with a DVD that shows you how to slowly get your bird used to wearing it. I did a quick search on YouTube and came up with both the manufacturers video, and a video from GoodBirdInc. on how to harness train your bird. The foot harnesses aren't used anymore because they can cause injury to your bird if it takes off suddenly. I don't know about signs of overheating, but I know the measures some members have taken to prevent it. Some with outdoor aviaries have set up misters with fans blowing the mist into the aviary and over the birds. I know when I take Dorian out in his travel cage I fill a misting water bottle with from the fridge and periodically mist him with that. This goes over ok with him because something about going outside triggers the desire in him to take a bath in his water dish, so he doesn't mind when I help out with the mister.

Signed by me.

Korra is a classic closet talker. Dorian started his life in a pet store. People would come in and ask "does he talk?". He'd sit there like a little grey statue. Then they'd leave the store and he'd pipe in "does he talk, does he talk?".

So sorry to hear this. He knew he was loved and his final days were filled with caring and tenderness. What more can we do? <3

Well, bit of a sad update. I went to therapy for six weeks and it really seemed to be helping. As a matter of fact it was helping so much he discharged me from the service . . . And last week it went out again. Just as bad as the first time. I can't even do my exercises because they're absolutely agonizing. I can't get back into physio for a month, but a month is better than 3 months so I'll take what I can get. What I won't do is let him discharge me before I feel ready like I did last time!

I'd advise you to try Rescue Remedy. Some here have have good luck with it. PM Katana for her opinion

I keep an aloe Vera plant and I use it on myself as well.
-
Just how I'd like to go, I agree!
-
No, as much as I know Dorian loves me, I would lose finger segments if I tried this with my boy.
-
I hope it's ok answering a question not directed to me, but HRH stands for Her Royale Highness Lol.
-
Yeah, but a Velcro bird potentially is a problem when you can't pay them the attention and they start to pluck because they aren't getting the attention they need.

What to do when baby wants to be held but bites
Acappella replied to Giannine's topic in The Nursery
They are very adept at reading our body language so the stink eye can work. Unfortunately with my Dorian he's become immune to my stink eye and a stern "no", which is why my computer keyboard is now missing four keys!
