We had never heard of them either until we saw a picture on the net. Than of course like her mother she had to have it once she saw it lol. So we found one and he has papers and everything so we are thinking of breeding him being they are kind of unusual at least for this area. Here's another pic of him

Post edited by: Ronda477, at: 2007/12/02 18:33

No problem here Ziggy my little feathered friend doesn't eat anything out of our plates yet or even what we put up their on her stand for her to eat unless it's broccoli, cauliflower, celery, or her sprouts lol. She's still getting used to all of us. Patience, is a very hard thing lol.

Thank you Ziggy! I have a very close cousin who is Kuwait right now and we have no idea what is going on because he was suppose to be home already for 15 days to be with his family and they won't tell us anything. They would have to tell us if he was in a hospital and they haven't but they said no contact can be made at this point. So please keep him in your prayers as well. All those men over there could use an extra one said. The Bragg Family here hopes everyone on the forum and their families to have a very Happy Thanksgiving! And just like Ziggy said be thankful for what you have, some have much less. There is a country song called "Lucky Man". If anyone gets a chance they should listen to it. But again hope everyone eats till their pants need un-buttoned lol.

LOL Dave I meant just Macaws in general. I was thinking of the red fronted, but all the same I am just asking Macaw in general. But I think I get the point that they won't breed with other breeds. I know they are totally different than chickens lol even though hubby calls mine a pigeon but we were talking about that the other day why chickens will do that but other birds such as a blue jay or cardinal won't. Was just curious though. Thanks Dave!!
-
Well I don't know who gave me my Karma but I just recently got it. I thank you for whoever did. Made me feel really good and I'm glad this came up because I wanted to know how to get more. Also I must not be loved! No one at all has signed my guestbook! I look at everyone who has been there and then go to their page and see that they all have ppl who signed thier guestbook. What do you do for that? Do I have to give one of you CPR? lol Or maybe a {Love-000200C0} or a hug for all of you? Well I don't know will keep trying lol. What if I run away like this...
-
Ok that's not fair lol I just watched the second one and he really makes a ton more noises than mine does. She is still getting used to us though but she loved to hear yours on the computer lol.
-
I was just curious, not going to breed or anything maybe when I'm 60 lol, but was just wondering on some of these questions. We have a small farm and the chickens aren't picky on who they breed with meaning the certain breed won't stick with it's own it will mate with any breed. So my questions are... 1. Will a Timneh mate with a Congo? 2. Why wouldn't a Red Wing Macaw breed with a Green Wing? Just things like that. Do they only stick to thier own or will they if given the chance breed with another?
-
Wow Makena very cute little guy you have there! Mine is 7 months old and she is trying the same thing, I can hear her mumble things. I tell her to speak up lol.

I think everyone on this board is here to help no matter what your views are. Lets just keep that in mind. We are here to help. Even us newbies that don't have a clue lol. Time will tell Hannibal. I have had mine for 4 weeks and she seems a little more comfortable with me than my husband. They can change too when they reach their sexual peak. Well I don't know about peak but when they reach that breeding age. How old is your boy/girl? It's good he is going to both of you though. That is a good start.

I think some things were a little harsh. I wouldn't break my dogs legs to train them, I no longer see that comment down there it was probably deleted but as a mother and a volunteer EMT I tend to look at safety first. I HAVE to have a clipped bird. We have dogs, cats, children, and doors opening all the time. I work 50+ hours a week and volunteer for an EMT in our county and have 2 children along with a husband and a small farm to take care of. I don't have the time to train my bird the way some of you can. I have love to give and that's all I'm trying to do. My question wasn't on to clip or not to it was should I clip more or will it hurt the progress we have already made because I would have to towel her. After reading and debating on this I will wait a little longer to clip more only because I don't want the set back right now. She did have a very very very terrible flight. A flight that was suppose to take 5 hours took almost 14. Long story but I have been trying my best to be paitent and do everything I'm suppose to. I just was wanting to know if this would help our bonding if she couldn't fly off as much. But I have basically answered my own question. I do thank you for the ones that didn't seem to push their views. Everyone has thier own opinion and is entitled to it and that was what I was looking for. Just not the harshness of breaking legs or for my bird being less of a bird because she's clipped. That's what it sounded like to me. I didn't mean to post a bad question just trying to learn without judgement.

Judy has given you some great advice. From my own experience and being new myself it could take a little while for them to get adjusted too. It varies with all birds and well mine had a very very bad flight to get here so that is part of her problem I know. But just take your time and be paitient with him. Take everything you read into consideration and you'll know what is best for your little guy.
-
Thank you soo much Judy! These 3 weeks have been the hardest and longest of my life lol. All I want to do is try to bond to her and it's soo hard when she keeps flying.
-
Wow Martin mine is 6 months as well and garlic is a big thing in our house. I grew up in an Italian home so we always use it in about everything! Sooooo sorry for what happened. I hope you will join us again although nothing will take the place of your little Mahalo. Sorry again

I wouldn't show any emotion when he bites. Sometimes that may be hard to do but if you show a big reaction he may get a kick out of that and he will do it more often. SweetHeart has done some testing bites with me and some harder than others and I don't even act like it bothers me I'll have her do what I wanted her to do like step up or move her and than put her down and if I have to turn around and say my OOwwww. lol But from what I have read on here about biting if you show emotion or reaction from biting it could get worse. I'm sure others will have some to add to this.

SweetHeart as most of you know has 5 feathers clipped already. She can still fly! She can't go round and round the room but if I'm on one end of the living room she can fly to the other end with no problem and she can fly from her cage which is on one end of living room all the way into the kitchen counter. After 3 weeks and every time I try to get her or walk around with her she flies off. The breeder said I could clip 2 more feathers just to follow her line where she had just clipped. As nice as the breeder was I won't ever get another one off of her. I think she let them have too much free roam with the other birds and therefore kind of made her a wild bird! Of course the breeder could do anything with her because she hand fed her, but because she had free roam all the time with a million other babies I think she became wild in a sense. What are your opinions on this? I would have to towel her. There is no way at this point to just take her and tell her to give me her wing. She won't even let me hold her. I'm hoping if she knows she can't just fly off she will have to start trusting us a little more and not just be able to literally the second we bring her to the counter, couch, chair, dimmly lit room fly off. Please let me know what you guys think. I know it can be a touch subject but all I want to do is to love her and granite I know she might never be the sweet babies everyone else seems to have or cuddly but I'm sure I can get it to where she wants to just sit with us. Thanks!

What a sweety! Welcome to the forum Jimmy you will find tons of answers here! As far as bonding, you sound like your doing a good job by taking your time and talking to him and holding him when he lets you. Keep it up and write with any questions or problems. There are soo many ppl on here that can help and give good advice. I'm still new myself. My baby is 6 months old and I've only had her 3 weeks.

Ok a little by little so far this week I have tried to get a little closer to her. Hasn't worked to well. We just hit our 3 week mark on Friday with her. She is starting to take food from my hand. I found she loves loves peanuts so I have gotten those for treats for her. I tried taking her in a barely lit room. I brought her blanket that I cover her cage with and laid it on the bed, dimmed the lights and had her favorite snacks. Sounds like a nice little evening right? lol Well she didn't think so, she just kept going to the end of the bed and flying towards the light lol. I had it turned down very low. We have a dimmer switch in there and she still kept going at the light. She wouldn't pay attention to the peanuts. I tried talking to her and petting her a little and she would let me pet her if she came to me but she only did that to get a better height to fly off again towards the light lol. I guess I will just have to give it time. She growls at me when I go to get her off her stand if she knows it's not bed time yet. I have made her step up anyway. She will walk with me for a little bit on my shoulder but that makes me a little nervous being I know she doesn't trust me completely yet therefore I really don't trust her completely yet. When she's climbing my shirt to get to my shoulder I get to sneak in some petting her head and neck and some kisses. That doesn't seem to bother her. But again I guess it will just take some time. I have been giving her the peanuts just as a treat when she will come down to me or if I have to put her away and leave I give her a couple. And no she isn't a re-home bird she is 6 months old and we bought her off a breeder. But she did have a very very very bad flight! So hoping being she is a baby she will come around. But thanks for the ideas. We will keep trying and I'll keep you all posted.
