I always giggle to myself when someone verrrrry new complains that their bird doesn't want to come out. Because if they're anything like Klaus, in a short time the big issue will be getting them IN! Klaus knows the schedule. On weekend mornings he gets to come out while I have my coffee & read the paper (about an hour) then I give him breakfast, which is incentive enough to go back in. This way I can do chores & do grocery shopping, etc. On weeknights (and nights in general), he's out from the time I get home until the time I go to bed. I dim the lights and begin talking to him softly about how it's night-night time. I give him approx 257 pets and fuss over him while he sits on my shoulder. Eventually I get him to step up on my finger (this usually takes several attempts as he does NOT want to go to bed). Then quickly slip him in his cage, using the other hand to gently block him from climbing back up my arm. If I need to do this process in a hurry, I can usually coax him in with a treat (show it to him, then put it in his dish so he has to go get it).

Welcome! We're glad you're here, and a Merry Christmas to you, too. As far as moving, I'm sure he'll be fine. Just give him some space (while not isolating him) and be patient if it takes him time to warm up to the new place and new people.

I have recycled toys, for example, Klaus had a little wooden ladder with plastic hearts on it. The ladder is long gone, but I still put the hearts into his toy rotation. I also save all margarine containers, yogurt cups, small plastic juice bottles, and of course the ever popular caps! Paper towel & toilet paper tubes are great, too. You can cut 1" pieces and use them as "birdie bagels", or cut a longer piece, hide a treat in there and crimp both ends closed (just recently picked that one up here!).

Wow, I've heard of them getting "stuck" on a noise and doing it for 4 hours straight (unless the person relating the story was exaggerating) but I've never heard of the same noise non-stop 24 hours. I'm not sure what to advise!

I plan to flood the joint with pictures as soon as I get better at it! No time now, though, gotta go clean house!

Well, I turned over my credit card to Curves. I'm a full-fledged member! I have been there pretty much every day during my one-week trial, and love it. Yeah, me! My goal is to lose 5 lbs the first month - three weeks to go.

Aw, Dayo's tired at the end. Aren't they cute when they yawn? Klaus enjoyed it, too. He likes to see birds like Makena and Dayo, they babble like he does. He couldn't care less about superstars like Einstein.

That's hilarious. I love how they say things in context. Even though Klaus is only whistling (and babbling) at this point, it often seems like his input is appropriate for the situation.

I am very fortunate that I haven't yet had any visitors that want to insist one thing or another about Klaus. We may have company for New Year's (people Klaus hasn't met yet) and I plan to simply say, "He bites." ie You've been warned! :evil:

Hi, and welcome! I am a former "non-bird" person (didn't hate 'em, just wasn't very interested). My husband and son decided to get a CAG, and the little guy chose me as his favorite in the house. So, don't freak out, if I can do this anyone can! (Well, not just anyone, let me revise that. Anyone who loves and respects animals in general.) You will find a TON of info here. If you don't see what you're looking for, fire away with those questions. No one will get down on you, we're a very patient and friendly group. I guess my biggest piece of advice would be to have patience when Smokey comes home. Klaus (my bird) is a baby, too young to be "set in his ways" and yet he takes his sweeeeet time getting used to new things. So don't get frustrated if he doesn't play with a toy, or won't go on his play gym at first. Judging by your intro post, I would say you'll do fine - you seem to be a caring person who is concerned for the bird. Good luck, and welcome!

We are having a nice Christmas. I little hectic...had to go to two different gatherings yesterday, but today I'm taking it easy and gearing up for tomorrow (back to work, back to reality!). Hope you all are having a nice holiday, too...

Hi, and welcome, Scuba! I've actually heard varying opinions on bathing ranging from "They don't need a bath at all" all the way to "Oh, yes, mine gets bathed regularly, like it or not!". Personally, I have yet to bathe Klaus (I've had him since July). He tries his best to bathe in his water dish when he feels like it. I have been nervous to try to force it on him. My next plan is to start bringing him into the bathroom with the shower running so he can get used to the scenario and kind of go from there ... planning on purchasing a shower perch pretty soon, too. One thing that worries me is that we're in Michigan, and I keep my house between 65-67 degrees. I'm afraid of the little guy getting a chill! Anyway, since you & your bird are still getting to know one another, my biggest point would be to take it slow. You don't want to get off on the wrong foot by giving Echo (love the name BTW) a distressing bath! Good luck, and again, welcome!
