  1. Oh no, she will not be going out with nothing on because she will know how to fly. The great thing is that the lady who is the breeder is getting them used to the harness now. I'm thinking that she will probably stress a little about going out and about at first because it's all new but I don't want to over do it either. My goffins cockatoo loves a spoonful of warm oatmeal with apple at night. I read that oats help keep their feathers glossy. I guess what I want is to baby her enough where she feels secure but not so much that she turns neurotic.
  2. Well, the time is getting closer for my baby to come home and I am coming up with more and more questions in my head. Hopefully some of you can help me out. The first question is should I put her cage in a place that is quiet or where there is more activity? I'm talking about in the beginning, eventually everyone will be in the living room. I live by myself so its not like there would be a circus going on or anything. Currently I have my other two birds in the front bedroom because I spend a bit of time in there with the computer but I'm going to put them back in the living room area because I keep them up late sometimes by being on the computer. Second question is when should I start taking her around with me. I want her to be as social as she is capable of being and would like to take her to places with me. I don't want to do it so soon that it scares her but I don't want to wait until she's set in her ways either. Which leads me to another question. When I do start taking her with me, should it be with just a harness on or in a carrier as well? I'm thinking that if she's in a carrier she would feel more secure but maybe not, I don't know. I don't take my other birds out with me because I haven't put a harness on them. So, I haven't had these concerns yet. Another question, Do you think that it is good practice to still spoon feed her warm food even though she would be already weaned? My cockatoo really likes this at night before going to sleep but someone had warned me against this practice for a newly weaned baby. Personally I don't see the harm but have not had the experience with a baby before. I think that is it with the questions for now. At least until another 50 or so come up. Thanks
  3. She'll get there. I think it's totally worth it for them to have the freedom of going outside and maybe other adventures with you.
  4. I'm wondering that if in these pellets most of the oil is removed so it doesn't contain so much fat.
  5. That is so sweet that they love her so much. I agree, Nilah's boyfriend needs to go home, LOL
  6. Wow, I'm really sorry to hear this about your Miss Scarlett and sorry that nothing could be done for her to help. It sounds like you tried everything you could think of. If you find out what happened please do share if you feel up to it.
  7. They both are such neat little creatures. I love her little face. It won't be long now before she gets here and her new life begins.
  8. Welcome to the forum Doron, Annie is a beautiful baby. Enjoy her lots
  9. Well, I think it's been settled that the hen will come home with me. They are growing fast and starting to come out of their tub and play. It sure seems like the wait is long. I think that I will name her Piper but not totally sure about that yet. She is the one in the tub.
  10. They're both very beautiful. I can see a few differences between the two of them. Louie has yellow going all the way under his lower mandible and LuLu has more yellow and red on her shoulders from what I can tell from the pics. It will be wonderful when LuLu discovers that she can go places on her own.

Very nice photo and a beautiful bird.
  13. That's really cool. These greys amaze me all of the time. I'm glad that she is actually enjoying her showers now.
  14. Greywings is right. A lot of research has to be put into this before you start implementing it. I am a firm believer that certain essential oils could actually be good for birds. They are exposed to them all of the time in the wild. The first mistake that people are making here is the idea that they would be burnt like you would burn incense. In the little bit of research that I have done, no one burns these oils. They diffuse them in water vapor. You also have to remember that you cannot expose them to certain things that they would expose themselves to in the wild. For instance, Macaws and amazons may eat vegetation that would be potentially toxic to them but then they head to the riverbank to eat clay which removes the toxins. There is a lot of things that you have to keep in mind. Without that knowledge, I wouldn't fool with it.
  15. Ahh, He's beautiful. It looks like a boy to me.
  16. It's great that she's taking to the harness. Sounds like you guys had a nice time. Gabby's curiosity sounds cute.
  17. I'm with you, June hasn't been so great for me either.
  18. Jean Pattison (African Queen Aviaries) is where I am getting my baby CAG from. I am having a good experience. She's on the up and up and knows what she is doing. I went to her for a baby because I heard good things about her and her birds as well. Also, she is experiened with shipping a bird so that is a good thing. I would think that it would be nice to see a baby that you are going to get first but sometimes that can't happen. Be careful in your search so you don't get burned and good luck.
  19. I am really excited. Right now I have an alexandrine parakeet and a goffins too. I got them both as adults and I absolutely love both of these guys. They both have very distinctive personalities and very different from each other. Yeah, there is feathers everywhere at times, and food everywhere, and poop, and shredded papers and chips of wood. But the smiles and enjoyment that they bring pay for it. I really believe that temperaments are genetic but personalities can be formed quite a bit with experiences that the bird encounters. I am certainly going to do my best to help this baby become an adult who is confident, happy and as social as he/she can be. Oh, did I mention all of the yelling. They love, love, love to be loud. But you know that already.
  20. Hello Lissa and Arnie. So sad that Arnie was in a trapped in a cage for so long. Happy that you found each other. I imagine that if that's all you know then everything else can be kind of scary. If always presented with the opportunity I'm sure he will eventually take it in due time.
  21. My guys that I have now get a lot of fresh food but there are times when that can't be given. A couple of days a week I get up at 430 and leave the house at six. I don't want to disturb them so I will give them a parrot mix with low sunflower in it and pellets the night before. On those days I will give them fresh food in the evening but they aren't as interested in it at that time. I just don't want the fresh stuff to sit there all day. I'm looking for something that is dry that is actually good for them. The food I was referring to is organic and has a lot of good stuff in it but sunflower is the first ingredient. That doesn't sound so good.
  22. I have a question? I am sitting here looking at the ingredients of a bag of pellets for parrots that I bought. These are supposed to be top of the line, good for your bird pellets and I've noticed that a lot of people agree (including avian veterinarians) with this which is why I bought them. They are not cheap either. Everyone agrees, for the most part, that a diet high in sunflower seeds is not good for your bird. I am looking at the ingredients on the bag and the #1 ingredient is sunflower seeds. There is a whole list of things here that would seem to be good for your bird but it's still mostly ground sunflower seeds. I am not trying to start a debate, just wanting to know why these are so popular. Why is it different than giving your bird hand fulls of sunflowers seeds for a meal?
