Hey guys, I have a question. When I approach my little girl a lot of times she will make some squeaks and a little noise that is hard to describe but it makes me think that she wants something. She also will rub her beak back and forth on the perch while making these noises. Kind of like my other guys do when they are wiping something off.. What does this mean. I feel like she is telling me she wants something but am not sure. She comes up to me while doing this. Do you know what this means?

You can buy pure 100% aloe juice at Walmart for 7.99 for a jug. I can't remember exactly how much is in there but it appears to be about a half gallon. I put it in my horses feed all the time because it's good for their digestive system. Also good for birds to ingest as well.

If you have photo bucket or make an account with them you can post your photos from there. As far as the cage size goes, I think that is fine as well. I just brought my baby home last week at seventeen weeks. Her cage is 30" x 42" x 72". At the beginning of the week she only utilized the top part of her cage and the outside play gym part but now she is starting to explore every part of it.

So far Poet goes to anybody but she's just a baby. I want to try to keep it that way because I want my oldest niece to take her when I kick the bucket and she has to get along with men too. I really don't think that will be a problem with her though. I think my niece is a bird herself, or a butterfly, I'm not sure which.

Well, it seems to me that parrots will gravitate towards the opposite gender of humans given the chance but will be friends with anyone given the proper socialization and if you treat them with respect and kindness.

I was just online a couple of days ago to find out how to make a mesh rope ladder. It doesn't look that hard, just a little time consuming. Something to do while just hanging out around the house.

Mine is too new and too young to tell I think. She just makes little baby squeaks and whistles. She does like to hang out and play with her toys.

Hello Lori and Maggie Mae, welcome to the forum. My name is Lori too. The time the breeder is keeping your baby sounds fine. Do you have pictures yet? I would love to see her.

Sisal would be fine. If it's in good enough shape to handle a good cleaning it might be worth keeping. I would wash it really well in dish soap rinse it and then make a very mild solution of bleach water and soak it for about an hour and then rinse, rinse, rinse. Let it dry out and see what it looks like.

These would be some things I would think about. What is it made out of? Cotton? Synthetic material? Is it toxic? Would it mess with the digestive system? Is there mold on it? Bird poop from birds outside?

I did a lot of research on lighting when I created a planted aquarium three yrs. ago. Lighting is very important for the plants obviously but you also have to take into consideration with the depth of water. I have a large deep tank. As soon as light hits the surface it starts becoming less effective. First I purchased florescent lighting (5000 kelvin daylight bulbs) but wasn't satisfied because it made everything in the tank seem so flat and two dimensional. Then I moved on to metal halide lighting. Beautiful, the water shimmered and the plants loved it. It was very expensive, very hot, and used up a lot of electricity. Then, I checked out 5000k, 850 lumen, daylight led bulbs. I loved it. No more heat and it only used 15 watts of electricity and the tank shimmered beautifully just like with the halide lighting. More importantly, the plants go crazy with growth. Now, they say that the led's do not emit the uv rays but, I don't know, it makes my plants grow. I've been using those with the birds as well. The bulbs are kind of expensive (about 30 bucks each) but they last a lot longer and emit the full color spectrum a lot longer than florescent or halide. Worth a look anyway. Also, they will screw into any fixture that takes a regular bulb and is big enough for the diameter of the bulb. You can also get ones that are dimmable.

Very nice!! Now I want one.

It sounds like she has had a great journey. Glad she is home where she can settle in. I would love to see photos of her.

There are plenty of people here that would care for your babies if in need. Nobody will let them get BBQ'ed

That's what it is like with my new little girl. I'm female and we're getting along just fine but I think she really prefers the guys. Her favorite at the breeders was the husband even though the wife fed everyone. I had my nieces drag their boyfriends over so she can feel more comfortable. lol She freely went to everybody.

Colin should have asked him who he was.

I know that most claim that the sex of the bird doesn't matter and I mostly agree but still kind of on the fence about it. Out of everyone who absolutely knows the sex of their bird. Who is bonded to them and who isn't? Who is the same gender as their bird and who isn't? I would like to kind of take a survey.

It looks pretty good. Do your birds like it?
-
I wouldn't worry about it so much. I plan on dragging mine around with me all over the place if she will tolerate it. We used to go everywhere with our birds when I was a kid. They were amazons and a lory not greys, but I think people make them out to be worse than they really are and protect them too much from fears.

Cool, I haven't thought of coin wrappers.
-
No, I just climb up there and she steps up on my hand. She's not afraid of me or anything. She just doesn't know what the rules are yet, or I don't lol.
-
I'll go with the tape or decals. I don't want her to learn the hard way. She is going to be a handful. <3 and I love her already.
-
Great idea, You're a flight saver. I'm getting some.
-
I got her flighted upon my insistence. Yesterday she went crazy flying which would be ok except that she found almost every window that wasn't covered to fly into and I was terrified that she would break her neck. I gave her a small trim and she can still fly but it's a little more effort and she just glides down. I see I missed a little piece but I'm not going to bother her more right now with it. I'm sure when she is more relaxed about being here and everything isn't so new I can let her feathers grow back and she can fly around again.

I've read time and time again that the kicking scratching thing is normal in babies. Seems that a lot grow out of it and some don't. Either way, not a big deal. As far as the fear of stuff? Normal for a grey. I wouldn't try to protect him from the world or you might end up with a phobic adult. If you can detect what he's afraid of, just don't make it into a big deal. Play with the stuff and let him watch you. Keep on introducing him to new things. When he gets used to one new thing, introduce him to another.
