  1. Hello Linda and welcome to our family. Congrats on your new addition to your family and you are correct in asking questions before you bring Zephyr home. About the cage, use it but put the perches lower and pad the bottom of the cage to begin with to soften any falls, young baby greys tend to be a little clumsy until they master the art of climbing and perching. About the clipping, why not allow your grey to remain flighted, it does increase confidence but to allow a bird to do what it was meant to do is only fair, I know there are situations where it may be necesary but the majority of us love our flighted birds so keep that in mind as the weeks and months go by. Do read thru the many threads here for lots of useful information and most questions people ask have already been answered in former threads but we are here to help if you need us so ask any question you like. If you get the chance to take pictures of Zephyr please consider sharing them with us, we love those babies.
  2. Great pictures of a hanging Cocoa, aka "Bat bird"
  3. She may be one of the few who choose not to talk and some greys will never talk, they might mimic sounds and such but never say a word, but since she is an adult bird and its only been a few months she may talk yet, just keep doing what you are doing and see what happens.
  4. In my opinion maybe Rosie just doesn't want to come out of the cage at the time you are trying so hard to do so, try letting her come out of the cage on her own and then maybe she will be more receptive of stepping up but like Daniel said it looks like she is not comfortable with you trying to get her to step onto your hand. Some greys are cage aggressive meaning they do not like to be disturbed when in their cage, it is their safety zone and they do not like human intrusion. Why not allow her to come outside the cage then try getting her to step up, if she refuses then maybe she doesn't want to at that moment, wait a bit then try it again but chasing her around inside her cage is not how to maintain trust with her, she wants to make some decisions for herself.
  5. Timmy is so handsome and that first picture is my favorite of him, thanks for sharing a few pics with us, you two look good together.
  6. I too would be concerned about taking your grey to pet stores and the like for you never know what you may be exposing your bird to, some diseases and such are airborne so you really have to be careful about that.
  7. Hello Kelsey and welcome to our family. I wouldn't worry too much about the limited vocabulary Marley has right now as he is just getting into the age when a lot of them just start talking, my grey didn't talk until she was about 1 year of age but soon you will be amazed at how much they learn and say. Do you talk to him a lot when you are around? Does he mimic other sounds he hears in the household during the day like phone ringing, microwave, doorbell and such, those are usually the first sounds you hear? Take some time and read thru the many threads here as you will find lots of useful information, firsthand experience from the many members here, some with more than one grey and many of us with more than just a grey. Pictures are always welcomed.
  8. Hello Claire and welcome to our family. What a precious little baby grey you have there, I know you can't wait to bring him/her home to start the rest of your lives together. So sorry to hear of your previous grey but if it was a genetic defect then there was nothing you could have done to prevent it but glad you could open your heart for another one. Please do browse thru the many threads here for you will find a wealth of information, most all from firsthand experience with these amazing creatures. I have heard lots of good things about that place in New Jersey and one day I am coming up to visit that store.
  9. As gross as it is to a lot of people it is the highest compliment from a grey, what an honor.
  10. Most greys do sleep on a perch but that doesn't mean that a few who choose to sleep elsewhere have anything wrong with them, he obviously prefers to sleep on the bottom of his cage, if he is comfortable and happy down there then leave him be. I see this is your first post, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us more about yourself and your grey like what is his name?
  11. That is wonderful news, a long time in coming but better late than never, you can update with pictures please.
  12. I see a lot of these sculptures on facebook, most of them done with watermelons and some of them are in minute detail, its obvious that a lot of time was spent on making them so visually appealing, no pun intended.
  13. That doesn't look like plucking to me, just keep an eye out for any future developments but don't dwell on that spot, it might just be a few downy feathers out of place.
  14. Thats wonderful and human grade peanuts is fine for a treat but if you do it often in a day cut the peanut into several pieces so she doesn't overload on peanuts, she is one smart cookie.
  15. Hello Austin and welcome to our family. I am so glad you could give this bird a new forever home and also so glad you came here to learn what you are doing wrong. You found out that pushing him does no good and in fact it hurts the relationship but it can all be corrected if you follow our advice and be very patient with him as he settles into his new home. You never want to push a grey for more than they are willing to give so be prepared to spend a lot of time allowing him to feel comfortable, it may take months for him to come to trust you but it will be worth it when it does happen. As you are already finding out by reading thru the threads please continue to read as many as you can for it will be very helpful to you, be sure to focus on the rescue room for we have a couple of members who are starting to reap great rewards for their patience. Yes you overpaid for him but wasn't it worth it to get him out of an abusive situation and in the near future you will probably say he is priceless, I do commend you for being willing to give up so much money to remove him from that home but if you heed our advice you will find the most magnificient companion and a lifelong friend.
  16. Oh you will hear the phone ring, the microwave beep, the doorbell, sirens, farts, burps, coughing, sneezing and many more too numerous to mention, you will constantly be trying to figure out if it is the real thing or just Felix, oh the fun.
  17. They learn very quickly that food is not to be missed and it will be next to impossible to keep them out of it, I see maybe a little in cage time in the future for Storm, of course that never hurts as they have to learn to amuse themselves for periods of time.
  18. Hello Megan and welcome to our family. You have an adorable baby there and I know you can't wait to visit him/her, be sure to take pictures and you will be amazed at how much they change from week to week.
  19. Hello Makes3 and welcome to our family. I think the majority of us have more than one bird and more than just one species, its hard to pick a favorite of all the parrots so we get a variety but the grey does get pretty close to being the top pick. You are really lucky that BG is a cuddler as most greys like to when babies then they grow out of it, at least mine did so enjoy this aspect of your life with BG as most of us have to settle for head scratches. I have 3 birds, Josey my grey, Sunny my sun conure and Gypsy my cockatiel, the first two I got as just weaned babies and the tiel just dropped in my back yard a couple of summers ago, I kept her after searching for her owner and she has proved to be a wonderful companion. Pictures are always welcomed if you have some you would share with us.
  20. Congrats on your new addition to your flock, Kiwi is a great looking zon, I know you can't wait to bring him home, thanks for sharing the pictures with us.
  21. Luna is not going to let a little splint stop her from going where she wants to, imagine how she will be when she is free of that splint, you go girl.
  22. Hello Tanya and welcome back. I am sorry to hear that Phoebe passed away. Yes Jeff she does have another grey, his name is Jackson and she has had him more than a year now.
  23. Yes they are referred to as the gentle giants though they have a beak that looks like they could take an arm off if they wanted to. I have seen them before but not as babies, one of the members of our bird club used to have two of them but she fell into ill health and had to find them new homes, they are gorgeous birds but not for me.
  24. Hello Anderson and welcome to our family. You don't say you have a grey, do you? Its not a requirement for joining, just a love for these awesome creatures is all thats needed. I have a Cag, named Josey, she is 6 and 1/2 years old and I have had her since she was weaned, I have a sun conure and a cockatiel also.
  25. I did not choose my grey, she was picked for me by a bird friend and she picked the one like she was picking for herself, she handfed her until she was ready to come home but I would like to think she would have picked me if it had been possible.
