when do congo african grey parrots start talking
judygram replied to steph's topic in The GREY Lounge
Steph, how old is your grey? I ask because you wonder when he will start talking. Josey talked when she was about 1 year of age, some greys talk earlier and some later and a few do not talk at all, but it sounds like Goober will talk if he is already saying hello. I would just be patient and the words will come and then sentences. -

MY NEW CONGO(CAMEROON) AND TIMNEH
judygram replied to PThizzilini's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Since Greycie was there first, always do things for her first so she knows she is top bird in the flock, otherwise she might get jealous and you will have behavior problems. I would continue to monitor both of them when they are out together just in case they do decide to get a little feisty with one another, you don't want one hurting the other. Forget about babies, greys that are pets do not mate, breeder birds need the proper conditions for that to happen besides its my understanding that Tags won't breed with Cags. Thanks for sharing the photo with us.B) -
MY NEW CONGO(CAMEROON) AND TIMNEH
judygram replied to PThizzilini's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
You got two nice looking greys, a very pretty Tag, Greycie and a precious looking Cag who is still a baby, I just love those dark eyes. Congrats on bringing home the baby Cag and now you have one of each. How do they get along with one another, looks like they at least tolerate each other from the picture, thanks for sharing that with us. -
Congrats Jody on the clean bill of health for Sidney and Ricco and they are coming home, I want to see pics of both of them as soon as you can manage it, oh now I am excited about it. :woohoo: :silly:

Good for you Tracy on exhuming Smoky's body to have a necropsy performed, in finding out why he died it may in some way prevent someone else from losing one the same way. Please keep us informed of whatever you find out. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers to help ease your pain.

I have included a site where you can search by state to find breeders of greys: http://www.avianbiotech.com/Breeders/Breeders.asp You can also ask local avian vets for recommendations of good breeders in your area. Good luck to you.

Thats good news Mary about Echo and I can imagine that it is harder on you than him, I bet that about breaks your heart to go by his cage when he says step up and lifts his foot, he wants out with you but for his own good he has to take it easy for a while. I hope it heals up soon so he can spend more time with you and then you and him will feel much better. Thanks so much Mary for updating us on Echo and keep up the good work.

You know Tiko, someone would think you might be a little proud of Jack, you have 3 threads going with his pictures:whistle: thats ok, but try to keep any further pics in the same thread if you can.

Oh my Susan, I remember my first grandchild and it was a boy too, now I have 3 grandkids, the boy and two girls. I know you will enjoy them very much, I love the way I can spoil them and then give them back to their parents.  I look forward to seeing some pics Susan and congrats.

Hello Nicole and welcome to the family, so glad you decided to join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Zazu. I'm so happy to hear you found it in your heart to give this rescue a home, imagine that, they gave him up because he bit them, I can't figure out why in the world he would do that, how odd is that. We have lots of threads here that deal with all sorts of issues, behavior, feeding, cages, toys and you name it we have a thread for it. Read thru them for lots of ideas and suggestions and ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to answer them and help you in any way we can. If you have any other pictures, besides the one in your avatar, of Zazu you would like to share with us we would love to see them, he looks like a handsome fella.

Hello Erica and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and this new grey. What a wonderful birthday gift, your husband is so sweet to give you what you have been wanting for so long. Now you need to do some researching and reading to find out all you can before you bring this grey home especially since this is your first bird, and you came to the right place for knowledge. Take some time and read thru the many threads for lots of useful information, you didn't say whether you were getting a baby or an older bird but do ask any and all questions you may have. We have a nursery room where you can find out about the baby greys if that is what you are getting if not the other rooms will probably have some of the answers you are looking for. Whether you get a baby or older grey we will do our best to help you in any way we can, just let us know what you need. I anxiously await pictures of Lacey Grey when you get the chance to share them with us.

Hello Shyfire and welcome to the family, so glad you decided to join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your greys, Zeus and Mia. I am so happy you could give these two greys a loving home and the environment they need to be healthy and happy in. That is so cruel that they were kept in such a small cage, never to be let out with no love or attention. It sounds like you have accomplished a lot in the 3 weeks you have had them and I am sure with lots of time and patience they will come around and trust you, just keep working at it. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful and helpful information and do not hesitate to ask questions you may have and we will do our best to get you some answers and help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of Zeus and Mia you would like to share with us we would love to see them.

Tracy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss, you have my deepest sympathy. Like Talon mentioned, without a necropsy done there is no way to know what he died of, it could have been one of many possibilities. As you know birds hide illness well until they can no longer so Smoky might have been ill for a while before he showed any symptoms. You did everything you possibly could so don't blame yourself in any way and I am sure he knew you loved him but this will take some time to get over, maybe you could put a piece about him in our memorial section. I have included a link to the Rainbow Bridge poem if you haven't read it already it is so comforting at this time in your life. http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm<br><br>Post edited by: judygram, at: 2008/06/24 04:51

Yes Marcia, I am in Virginia and I am so glad that you found your way back to us again after a long absence, you have been gone about six months. But you have been busy I see with 30 birds and some of them challenges but you seem like the kind of person who if anyone can make miracles happen you will. You have some difficult cases there that you are working on and it takes a special kind of person to finally get thru the shell and get into the heart of these birds and I know you will accomplish this in due time. I feel as you do about the new Casey in that man's life, he hasn't a clue to the disservice he is putting that grey thru, I feel so sorry for him. Be sure to add this site to your favorites list so you can come back as often as you like so you never lose us again, welcome back to greyforums.

Gosh thanks for the background of your life and your experience with greys and handfeeding, I would say you are well qualified to raise a grey baby. How lucky are you to be able to work with all kinds of parrots and exotic pets and what wonderful experience and knowledge that brings into your life, you know so much more than a lot of us do, we should be asking you for advice. Congrats on finding a suitable breeder and soon you will have that baby grey and no one will be able to take that away from you. As we age we find out what is more important and our greys are like our own children and we would never give them up. BTW, I love the drawing of the two greys in your avatar.

I know there is some controversy on this subject but I would try covering her at night and do not check on her during the night, that might be disturbing her too. If you do put her into a travel cage for sleeping don't put her into your room, your moving about in bed might interrupt her sleep.

First off, we have some threads that deal with some of the things you ask about, just look around the nursery room for lots of ideas and suggestions. I also recommend putting the perches low in the cage and maybe putting a towel on the bottom to cushion any falls the baby makes, you can cover the towel with newspaper to keep it clean. You need to get some different perches, some cement ones to help keep the nails filed and other types of varying sizes to keep the feet in good condition. Do a search for toys and browse thru to find some good suggestions and you can find some good toys in the baby section of your local stores, they are cheaper than made for bird toys. They need some they can shred, tear up and otherwise destroy to keep them busy and occupied. Some of the members take their greys in with them when they take a shower or use some type of sprayer or mister to wet their greys down for bathing, some will bathe themselves and then some hate getting baths. But the important thing is they do need to get thoroughly wet at least 2 times a week for the dust and to moisturize the skin. Several members do have their greys microchipped and I have heard from others about the new GPS type chip, now that would be neat, but I don't know where to find them, maybe ask your avian vet or do a internet search for them. Others will chime in with more ideas and suggestions.

Steven you wouldn't want to take the risk of losing them and they can fly some even with clipped wings, best to take them out in a small travel cage or on some kind of harness and leash. I have taken Josey outside in a small cage and she did ok with it, of course I take her with on occasion, sometimes to work.B)

Well congratulations to all the winners, a wonderful bunch of photos and captions and Tracy, you did it.
