Some greys need more things to keep them busy and providing foraging opportunities will do the trick for a lot of them. We have some threads that deal with what you can provide for them, there are foraging toys you can buy and inexpensive ones you can make. Some greys like to destroy anything made of wood, others love tearing up paper, you know your grey best so you should be able to come up with things to keep the beak busy without pulling out feathers. You say he is itchy, bathing 2 to 3 times a week seems to help with that and using the aloe vera juice will help also, especially hit the bare areas, the juice seems to soothe the skin. There may be something else that has made him start to pluck but try this and see if there is any improvement then we can go from there. Other members will have some more and better ideas and suggestions for you. Please introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little about you and this grey.

I bet you guard the next pizza better than you did this time:laugh:

OMG, you should have caught that on camera, I bet that was a hoot to watch, Josey loves pizza too, I think mostly because of the cheese on it, at least the dog got fed:laugh:

Or combine both veggies and fruits on one of those kabob things, the possibilities are endless:side:

You are doing great Laurie and I am so proud of you, you go girl and that extra money you are saving is coming in handy with the remodeling I would imagine.

This is great news to hear Sameera and those feathers were bothering her but now she is back to her old self and doing very well, keep up the good work and keep us updated on her further progress.
-
Have you read the FAQ section, there is one on posting pics to the site?

I've never taken mine on a plane but I would imagine you have to have some kind of vet certificate stating she is in good health and get her into the cabin with you and not in the cargo hold, the temps can get very hot there. This might limit you on the number of carriers that will allow this but for her own safety it is imperative you do so. I wouldn't thing the pressure would affect them any more than it does us and other members who have some experience with flying with their grey will chime in with some ideas and suggestions for you I'm sure.

Josey eats off a portion of food on my plate that I haven't touched with my fork, I usually push a little of the food I want her to eat to the edge and she gets it there. Sometimes instead of her eating off my plate directly, especially if I have something she can't have, I will put her portion in a bowl on her playstand and she eats it there. There is a lot of stuff they can have that we eat, just take a look around the bird food room for ideas and suggestions and also for the foods they are not allowed to have. But Josey loves any kind of rice or pasta as do most.
-
That doesn't sound like much for him to eat. I provide Josey with a bowl just for her pellets and it has maybe a third of a cup, enough for several days and she eats it as she wants. Does he have any fresh veggies and fruits? I usually put some dried fruits and nuts in a separate bowl and some veggies and fruits in another bowl. She also eats off my plate at the evening meal. If he is having 5 almonds a day, that seems like too many, I would say no more than 2 should be given, maybe giving other nuts and not just almonds for variety. The pellets are so good for them, providing a bowl of them for snacking on all day encourages them to eat them more. There are some threads in the bird food room that will give you some more ideas of what to offer, have a look thru.

Thanks Dan for the wonderful post to remind parrot owners to heed the warning about their flock overheating when outside in the heat and inside cars. I'm glad you weren't inside the house but for 5 minutes for if it had been for much longer Dayo might not be with you today and it can happen so quickly like you described. You may have saved a precious life today with your post, karma for you my man:kiss:

You may never have to trim those nails if you get a couple of those cement perches and put them in the cage, it kind of keeps the nails from being so razor sharp. I agree, they need those talons to climb and perch especially young ones since they need the confidence.

Hello Irie and welcome to the family, so glad you decided to join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Irie. M2MM and Dan have given you some excellent advice on quarantine and introducing new members to the flock. I would suggest that since Irie was there first to be sure to do for him first, he is top bird in your flock and that will ensure he knows his place is secure. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and we will do our best to find you some answers and help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of Irie you would like to share with us we would love to see him.

Thanks Tracy for the information, I guess this old bird doesn't know squat but then what else is new:blink: Dan, I could have done without that graphic but it did make me laugh, barely:whistle:

Hello Smart Dancer and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Winslow or are you calling her Melanie now? This is so nice of you to take in this grey especially from the conditions you describe, I would imagine she was loved but the grandmother's age prevented her from doing more than what was just necessary for her to survive. She should thrive in your home with the proper care and love and attention and it sounds like you are providing that for her. That is a shame she had to endure such conditions and who knows maybe she is grateful for the change. I am sure there will be some problems but with lots of time and patience you can work thru them and of course you have all us to support you in your endeavor. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do not hesitate to ask us any and all questions you may have and we will do our best to find you some answers and help you in any way we can. If you have any pictures you would like to share with us we would love to see her.
