Misty sounds like one spoiled brat, and I guess we all know who is boss if he no longer sleeps in his cage, not at my house, every bird sleeps in their cage or else. B)

New toys have to be introduced slowly as any new thing is viewed as a predator out to get them. Just lay the toy close enough that she is comfortable with and then later move it closer until she accepts it which may take a few days or longer. I find that when they are younger, say a few months they more easily accept new toys but as they get older they get more cautious so take your time in introducing new toys to her.

Thats funny Julie, my sun conure is the same way, she is small in comparison to Josey but she is the more aggressive of the two birds. She is the one I have to keep away from my grey and not the other way around. Must be the small complex, they try to make up in ferociousness what they lack in size.

I will check this out later after I get home, no sound at work.

The anticipation is killing me, can't wait to leave work and go home in the pouring down rain to get to my margarita, cheeseburger in paradise.

I am so sorry to hear this but do what you can for Rishi. Can you not travel a ways to find an avian vet for I would do what I had to help my grey with whatever he has as it could be very serious. None of us here are qualified to give you any answers for if a bird is sick they must be seen by a vet, someone who is qualifed to diagnose problems and diseases. I think you are doing the right thing to feed him and make sure he has some water so he doesn't get dehydrated. Maybe some of the other members will have some advice for you but if I were you I would start looking for the nearest avian vet, they may not be close but he needs it ASAP. Please keep us informed and I will keep Rishi in my thoughts and prayers that he be well soon.

That is a cool looking toy, very unusual looking, I just bet Nikki has a good time playing with it, I think it is safe enough, just keep an eye on it for any rusting that may occur.

If you do the feather method you have to freshly pluck them from the chest, you cannot use feathers that have fallen out for they are essentially dead so no dna available. There is a kit you can purchase to send in to get the results, I think it costs the same no matter which method you use, the site is www.avianbiotech.com

1sydneybird, why don't you tell us some more about you and Sydney so we can get to know you a little better.

Post edited by: judygram, at: 2009/09/25 19:00

No I think either method is reliable, my grey's sex was determined from a tiny drop of blood taken from the end of one of her talons but some use the feather method, either one involves a tiny bit of pain for the bird.

You could also use those quick links to keep them closed, they make those in all sizes so there should be some that would do the trick.
-
There is no set age for weaning, some do it in less time and others take longer but she will let you know when she is ready to end it.

It really should be us thanking you Penny, you have pretty much made this forum what it is today with some help from Ceasarsdad and I know your time is precious but you manage to stay on top of matters here. You are one amazing woman and I know of some of the hardships you have faced lately but you still find time to take care of business here and for that I am eternally grateful. I am honored to be a part of this forum and feel proud to be one of your closest friends and even though you have been thru some hard times you are being justly rewarded as we speak, you are doing one hell of a job so keep up the good work, you go girl! Love ya xox

As Lyn said, hang in there for I think it will get better in time but our birds are not like cats and dogs as you are finding out. They can be very strong willed but if we work with them and come to an understanding with them then we manage to get along very well and I think things will improve for you, you just have to work at it.

We don't do bashing here to newbies or otherwise unless it is called for so you are safe. I feed Harrison's high potency pellets to my grey but if you were given a big bag of Pretty Bird then I would go ahead and use it, no sense letting it go to waste. Harrisons is deemed the best by a lot of vets but that doesn't mean the other brands are worthless and especially if Coral eats it, he is getting nutrition from it, if you want to change him over to Harrisons later after this bag runs out that is up to you.

Welcome back Silvergrey, sorry to hear of your health problems but hopefully you are on the road to recovery now. Thats great that you could take in this grey, he is a lovely looking Tag, no wonder you are taken with him and it sounds like you are really enjoying having him as part of your life, Muru will enrich it and you both will be the better for it. Thanks for including a picture of Muru and feel free to share more if you have them.

Hello Charlotte and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Charlotte. As you have already been reading thru the threads continue to do so for lots of useful information and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. We love pictures here so if you have some of Charlotte you would share with us we would appreciate it.

If you get a female for Sydney I doubt that they would breed, they would have to bond with each other first and they have to have certain conditions for them to want to mate with each other even if they did bond. Besides Sydney is already a pet and pets do not make good breeders. Breeder birds like their privacy and do not want any human interaction. If you want this grey for the additional companionship then that is fine, she may get along with Sydney just fine and she may not. You will have to provide a separate cage for her as they need their own space to call their home.
-
That cage is not very deep, 17" is not enough room for your grey to open up the wings and flap, your cage should be at least 24" deep or more. Now if your bird will only be staying in it at night to sleep it may be ok temporarily but a larger cage is necessary so you should plan on getting a bigger one.

Josey did not talk until she was a year of age and I was beginning to think she was not going to talk at all so be patient, she will talk when she feels ready. You will probably hear a lot of gibberish at first as she is trying her voice but soon the words and phrases will spill out.
-
I don't stay up all night to see if Josey does indeed snack on her pellets during the night but leaving some in the bowl makes sense in case they do want some and some probably do snack during the night. They are not going to attract any more pests during the night than they do during the day.
-
Josey loves to chew up those plastic soda bottle caps and she will play for a while with the whole bottle, sometimes it is just something simple you have around the house that holds their interest for a while.

Some greys do go thru a change of favorite person but he is probably just asserting his independence now that he is 3 years old. He wants to be more in control of what he does and doesn't do and he has decided he doesn't want to be touched very much any more. They also will test you and he may be doing just that to see what he can get away with. I would give him some space for now, continue to talk to him and be around him but don't force anything right now and see if it improves with a little time. We have several members who have a lot of experience with greys and understand them better than I do and maybe one of them will be able to give you some help on this problem so hang in for now.
