First off, thanks for the XX explanation. I thought it had something to do with pornograhy:D Yes, I'm familar with Arcadia model avian light. It's a very decent light. I'm sorry that ZOO MED didn't get back to you. Maybe it had something to do with you being in the UK?? I really don't know. There's many companies that sell avian lights as well as stands for different style bulbs. I only put that one in as a basic description of what an avian is as opposed to a regular floursent bulb. One thing I should say to you. Even though you may have heard other things, let me say that it isn't absolutely necessary that yo u have an avian bulb. Loads and loads of people don't have them and never have or had problems with their birds. I have 3 greys and I periodically use one screw in avian bulb on one of them because of a drastic feather/skin problem he had. It took quite a while to straighten that problem out but in the 4 yrs that it took to straighten it out, the one thing I never used was any type of bulb which wouldn't have done any good. The bird was completely featherless except for his neck and head. Today he's fully feathered but once in a while I put the bulb on for him. If you know of places in the UK that sell avian bulbs, buy it but know that it isn't absolutely necessary. If you don't know of any places in the UK, then you may have tto find a company that ships. I never looked up those companies so I have no idea what shipping/handling would cost. You can something as simple as this-----5500K-----screw in-------$20.00 american

I really don't know where to buy avian lighting in England. It's probably in a large pet store. You say you're confused as what type to get so I'll give you he basics as far as what an avian bulb should have===( forget the company because I don't know if you have such a company in England) Zoo Med's new AvianSun™ 5.0 UVB Compact Fluorescent Bulb. This unique lighting arrangement will provide birds with safe levels of beneficial UVB and UVA for physical and psychological health. UVB enables birds to synthesize vitamin D3 for proper calcium metabolism which is necessary for normal growth, maintenance of strong bones, and egg production. UVA is visible to birds, enabling them to recognize mates, locate food, and identify different species. Others may give you more info. Maybe you can find a company that ships to the UK. PS---I have no idea what XX PS means. One thing----no matter what light you get, it will definitely say AVAIN LIGHT on the package

******Yet she is clearly repeating words, phrases, and noises that I may say once or only a very few times. For example, today she repeated the last few words I said on a phone call yesterday.******** That's the way a grey learns--only by association. That's what they're known for. They're one the rare species of parrots that can do that. Repeating and repeating is only teaching the bird how to do a very unnatural thing--mimicing. Many birds mimic. An example of a grey of a grey talking by association A person will take a phone and go to another room and start taliking. Eventually the call ends as you're coming near the bird. """sytu bujlst ogdo meape rway yusw kabu lrtq uhttagy mij hlpywhbq cjyt pusb wqay ghvw wjta lpko cpot qyh''''; ( now it's time to say good by to the person on the phone-- higher pitched voice) """Ok, nice talking to ya. Be good thanks for calling.""""" So this whole proces sounds like the bird is mumbling. It's not. When that person went away with the phone and starting talking, the sounds above were the only sounds it could hear because of distance. As the person got closer and the words were very clear it caused the bird to say those words much more clearly. So, the bird was imitating the whole sentence/sentences. Trying to make a grey talk on que is not very easy and many won't talk with more than one member of the family around. On the other hand, greys talk all day long in their own natural language. A person doesn't understnd it and there's a way to learn it but it takes time. The person who does this know that he/she needs to learn parrotese in order to understand what the bird is saying especially when the grey is not a human mimicer. I'd much rather understand what a bird is saying in their own language rather than listen to mimicing. They say so much more in their own language.

I'll go one step further---you shouldn't be bringing in an animal to any house that has another person who hates that type of animal. It really doesn't matter what kind of experience you've had with birds in the past. It's a good chance that that other person may hurt the bird because of a minor incident. Birds ususlly bite when a person does that and that bird will definitely dislike that person and usually bite . Bringing a rehomed parrot into a house means that the whole family has to be involved in making that bird feel comfortable. Not only is 2 wks enough to make judgements but 2 weeks isn't enough time to have feathers grow back in and you don't even know what's making her pick and pluck. What happens after 2 weeks? Back to the owner? Get another kind of pet that the whole family enjoys. You're not doing the bird any favors by putting time limits of anything you wanna happen.

You never did say how old these parrots are. Age can make a big difference as far as what permanent baggage/habits these birds have or have not developed. Everyone here is talking about adult birds. That also applies to birds that have been confined together.
-
Jazz, Smokey and Tee and yes, they know their names and yes, each knows when I'm talking to him and yes, each sometimes responds when I talk to each of them. They're all adults and familiar with their names.

One of my greys likes to bathe. He never makes a fuss about it. The other 2 don't like baths so I have to do it but I really don't do it often. Maybe once a month unless there's a special problem comes up that requires them to get frequently wet.. They don't need lots of baths. That's a fallacy. If they really desired or nature required them to take frequent baths, they'd jump into the nearest water area available such as their water bowls. Also they like very cool water to bathe in.

No problem other than she may become pretty. There's nothing like a grey with no blemishes
-
Probably not. You would see the effects of that cream pretty quickly but she may develop smooth pretty legs which may shine if a male should get near her.

I really don't know what you mean by **parrot forum into a political battle ground*** What does that mean? Giving good wishes to a family that's suffered a tragedy isn't political. That type of thing happens all over the place. .

Most of the most healthy foods talked about here have to do with vegetbles, fruits, nuts plus certain items that are staples in the greys that live in the wild. Pellets are discussed but many people don't care for them. Others do. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, certain oils that are gotten in the wild provide all the health needs these birds need. Otherwise, the greys in the wild would be not be so healthy. There's a big difference in classification of outdoor wild birds. Predatory and prey birds. Predatory birds have a certain diet that they can easily get to. They don't eat vegetables. They eat when they want to and have very little difficulty with their digestion. Then you have the prey birds. Their eating habits are diferent. They eat on the run with others watching out for predatory animals. Find wild greys. Put out a large amount palm nuts on the ground and next to it, put out a large amount of the best organic prime raw meat you can find. You tell me---what's gonna get devoured very quickly??? Some will eat that prime meat --IF the palm nuts are totally gone BUT before touching that meat, the hungry ones will still try to see if there's even a smidgen of palm nut skin around. I don't know if you're referring to human or animal health issues. As far as birds, their life span has increased as new facts are discovered. The same thing applies to humans. Prey birds will eat in the trees on the trees and any other place that's safe. They're not to many rodents running around those trees and the birds couldn't catch them if they wanted to. Raw meat isn't so available in the trees either.

Well like I said--it's expensive though. Look thru websites and you'll see what I mean. Personally, I think it's worth it. It looks like luv already jumped into the Orgreenic frying pan and slid out with no stickiness. Different websites may offer deals if a couple of them are purchased.

What are ya sorry about? I wish you the best with your new cookware. It's great to cook with a smile.---No sticky, no messy

Here in the US, we also have a new product caled Orgreenic. It's been discussed before but on the whole people were still in doubt about possible teflon in it. Finally, there' articles out including the one below that talks about the fact that Orgreenic contains no teflon or chemicals, related to teflon. The down side is that it's expensive. People always want to have the best cooking products that they can use for preparing meals for their family. This is probably the main reason why a lot of individuals now choose to use Orgreenic cookware due to the fact that it is something that ensures quality cooking aside from being health friendly. Orgreenic cookware has become as the perfect alternative for the traditional cookware that have long been used by many families all over the world. This is also very ideal for individuals who are highly conscious of their health, especially fats like oil and butter will no longer be required when cooking with the use of Orgreenic cookware. You are surely aware that there is already a great increase in number of people who look after their health as they are now more worried about their cholesterol levels and weight, which makes them go for lesser fatty ingredients in the meals that they eat. But sad to say that many traditional cookware, especially those made from aluminum, stainless steel and iron, will still call for the use of butter and oil when cooking food so that it will not attach to pan's base. Basically, Orgreenic is a breakthrough among non-stick pans which can help you in avoiding a lot of years old issues concerning non-stick coatings. In the year 1938, there was a substance "accidentally" invented at the Jackson laboratories in DuPont. This very slippery substance came to be known as Teflon and at present, this became popular to be the slipperiest material that has come to existence. Since it is being used for numerous purposes, from the field of aerospace up to numerous industrial processes, Teflon also became familiar among households as it is being used to coat pans and other cookware to make sure that the surface will not be sticky. It then allows a lessening in the fat or oil quantity used for cooking. Sad to say though, that several concerns regarding Teflon's safety has started to spread and now, lots of people have discovered that Teflon coatings applied on pans do chip off and can even be scraped even by simply using plastic utensils. Just the mere thought of these small chips mixing with the meals that they will serve to their families is enough to unnerve a lot of individuals, knowing that you are clueless as to what might be the effects of such. "Teflon flu" reports as well as the risks posed to the house pets during high temperatures were sufficient in making more families decide to other non-stick cookware. Since porcelain or ceramic cookware has already been used all over the world by plenty of users, deciding to use the Orgreenic cookware seems like a more sensible and safer choice that you can make. If you no longer want to pose your family members to unknown consequences as well as other health risks, opting to use the Orgreenic cookware made from ceramic material can surely make you free from any kind of worries. Let's all be grateful in this happy moment

Great heartfelt thoughts and a sincere way of thinking. Thanks very much I was watching that woman and the reporter when it happened. It affected both my wife and I and I thought I'd share. -

Toxic bacteria that is sometimes present in meat, such as E. Coli and Salmonella. That's how people get those diseases.( raw, undercooked meat) Also, many people don't have access to organic meat. In addition, some raw meat is often riddled with parasites that will take up residence in the intestines of a dog that eats the meat. These parasites can migrate about the body, often curling up in a little cocoon-like structure known as a cyst. They can live in the intestines for a long time without being noticed and then wreak havoc with normal digestion and causing diarrhea and vomiting. Once you have looked at these worms, flukes and tiny parasites under a microscope, you hope that they never make their way into your own body. Parrots may eat a carcass but only if it's absolutely necessary. Would you share the carcass of a dead rabbit while loads of maggots are also crawliing around eating the flesh? I heard that maggots taste just like chicken. I believe that feeding an animal things it wouldn't normally eat is unhealthy. In the wild, parrots don't search around eating eggs BUT they will feed some eggs to their birds. My birds will just have to be satisfied with their present diet.

My opinion is to hold off on that vet visit untl he's more used to you and the surroundings. If it's the feather pulling that's bothering you just know that so many birds do that in the beginning of moving into a new home especially adult birds. You've already said that he's easing up on that which is great. A new move causes nervousness. A move into a new area can cause angsiety. New people can make a bird frightened. Coming from a bad situation doesn't help either. Let him go in and out of his cage when he wants to. When he'sout offer nuts which is a favorite food. Don't worry about him going on you or the hubby. Do things around him and let him see what you're doing. Greys are very interested in getting into the mix. I give these reasons because of something you said about grabbing him. Most birds will take to one method as opposed to another. You've tried different methods and it won't work. Basically, your brd will have to be on the floor so he can be grabbed with a towel. Both you and hubby will have to do this. He'll scream, growl, try to nip. That's not unusual. You'll put him in a cage. ( small if you hve one). Go to the vet and let the vet become the *bad guy*. They know how to handle aggressive birds. When coming home, have the regular cage door open and he'll jump right into it. He's gonna stay angry for a few days. Try these things out and tell us what's happened.

Like Talon said, they do shed the top layer of their beaks. The area above the crack is the older part that will be shed by your bird by scraping. The area below the beak is part of the new beak coming through. This will go on for a few years until it isn't noticable. One thing you shouldn't worry about is color. A very young bird has a shiny solid beak but as they get older, theyll scrape and scrape. Mostly it's the bird's way of cleaning the outer beak. As the bird does that, he'll lose that shiny black color and it'll be replaced with a scratchy medium grey color and that's the color that'll be permanent. An example--

A question is only silly or minor if it's not asked.

That's why I asked about the opening in the band. Bands like that are put on birds that are usually what's called batch birds meaning that there's a large group to be sold and IDs are put on the legs of all the birds. In case you're interested, in 1992 the US made it against the law concerning importing and exporting birds so I doubt that your bird is any type of wild caught bird. You haven t had the bird for a long time and training isn't that hard. It just takes longer. I hope you enjoy your bird and I'd like to personally give my apologies for all the craziness that happened. It was a huge misunderstanding and because none of us are perfect, these types of things do happen. We hope you stay here and we'll always try to give sound help and advice.
