  1. Jiggy hates bedtime. When I start the bedtime routine, she makes this little noise and wants to sit on my shoulder. She is not a shoulder sitter usually. she likes to be with me but not so much on my shoulder. but come bedtime, she gets some extra time and will happily sit on my shoulder for ever. It is funny, as she is usually so active, but at this time she sits ever so quietly with me. When I go to put her in her cage she makes that little pleading noise again, clings to the bars of the cage with "that look". She knows it is our alone/quiet time together and hates it to end.
  2. Jiggy shakes her head when she is taking something in. She is absorbing the word she wants to learn.Try it. I bet yours are doing the same thing.
  3. I have many birds and they are all molting at this time of year. Here in the frozen north, out temp has changed drastically. A week ago hot and humid, today 9 celcius. Downy feathers eveywhere here! They always shed a lot of feathers in fall and spring. I wouldn't worry too much about it as your bird is healthy and molting is part of the life of your bird.

    fave toy!

I have problems posting pictures...I made a ball out of dog pull toys from the dollar store. I attached 12 of them together and Quinn is crazy about his ball. I do have a picture of it in my profile. The pull toys are figure eight shaped made of rope and plastic. This is the first toy ever that he never tires of. Jiggy is not as impressed with it but she will climb on it occasionally.
  5. I have a window ledge with a chunk out of it. Is wood filler safe to use?The lure of jagged wood is so tempting to my guys. I have to keep their cage far away. Actually it was one of my amazons that ate the window ledge. The greys have more expensive tastes. they have nibbled at a wooden dresser when they get the chance or the tv remote:S . I do have a tattle tale in the form of a blue crowned conure. When one of the birds or even himself is doing something naughty, he says "No no no no no!!" in a singing voice. Too funny. He will also do that if he is going to bite you;)
  6. I fed human grade peanuts to my amazon and she still got aspergillosis from them, so be careful. It is not worth the risk for me so I have cut them out all together on my vets advice.
  7. How wonderful of you David. Now, if you will kindly post your address and phone number so we can do just that, we are all set. How fortunate you are to be so wealthy. Indeed the shipping and vet costs would be a burden for someone not as generous as yourself. I will notify the parrot sanctuary near me , here in Canada that you will pay for the transfer and care of the 3 birds she has there that she cannot home because they swear. You are a very kind man indeed.
  8. I have a lady move into my house when I am away. I have some birds who have occasional night frights so would not be comfortable with someone just stopping in twice a day. Also, once my amazon got her toenail caught during the night and if no one had been here to hear her calling, I hate to think what would have been the result of that mishap. It costs not much more than if I sent my dog to the kennel and well worth every penny.Perhaps if you checked with a local pet shop they may know someone or could you pay a relative to stay at your house for that time?
  9. Mine said grey too. Although I have 22 birds 2 of them a CAGS.
  10. I find my greys very nervous in unfamiliar surroundings so I have someone actually stay at my house and look after my birds and dog.I would opt for some one coming in to see him if I were you as he is just settling in nicely to his new surroundings. A change might upset him. He may think "where am I going now? Is nothing forever?" They are very sensitive birds in my humble opinion. I know some other peoples' greys are fearless but my 2 are if in their own comfort zone only, so I only have that to go by. It is hard to leave them and upset their routine but that is life. It is good you are thinking ahead for him.
  11. I know of 3 parrots that are in a bird rescue shelter because no one wants them. One was found left at the dump by someone, who took it to the Humane Society. It was placed in a home but was soon returned as it constantly swore. The other was put in a pot of boiling water to "teach it not to swear" and rescued by a neighbour and taken to a bird rescue. The other was simply left behind when the people moved and was discovered by the new owners. It's problem? Bad language. This is cruelty teaching birds to cuss, not amusing, and you can bet the RSPCA would be very receptive to this animal abuse.
  12. Each one of us should "pay it forward" in honour of Zooky and Mendes. Zooky is doing something wonderful and kind. If each one of us did one kind or thoughtful thing to one other person, and then those people did for another person, many people have "paid it forward" in honour of Zooky and Mendes. Tomorrow at the coffee drive through, I am going to pay for the order behind me, and tell them to tell that person to 'pay it forward". These beautiful creatures bless our lives, for however long they are with us.
  13. It is not funny when a bird is left homeless due to a death or loss of the owner who taught and tolerated the swearing . I find it totally disgusting that anyone would be cruel enough to teach their birds to swear, and then actually video tape it. I wonder what the R.S.P.C.A. in England would think of that video. I would not open that link as cruelty of any kind sickens me.
  14. At the moment I have a sick Amazon, who has been on medication for 2 months so far for Aspergillosis. She got this from peanuts in the shell. She is old and is hypothroid so was more vulnerable than my other parrots. Aspergillosis has a high mortality rate. My girl is holding her own but her lungs did collapse and that has left her weak. She seems to be rallying round. My girl is not going to add to the mortality rate as we are going to beat this. Also, the daily med doses with the towel is one we both hate and she is hesitant to step up at all now. It is so not worth the treat of a peanut. Jackie
  15. What does the vet say? I would be worried about infection if I were you. Also, their beaks have sensitive nerves in them and any beak injury should be looked at pronto by a vet.
  16. What diet is your grey used to? If he is used to fresh foods, just increase them and add almonds, walnuts, cashews and some sunflower seeds. I give mine a warm food in the morning of chick peas, brown rice, carrots and beans, like garbonzo or lima or perhaps some peas. I give them a square of brown toast and peanut butter in the morning too. They have a dried noodle at bedtime, They love figs fresh and dried and pomegranites(sp?).Make sure you are compliant with his vitamins and minerals while he is getting used to his new diet and routine. Good advice from the others to consult a vet. I'll bet if you look up on line what he is used to eating, they may tell you where to get it or even ship it to you. Large quantities can be frozen. Good luck in your new home to both of you.
  17. My greys don't make chicken noises, but my Amazons do! And they are some loud chickens believe me! My female talks a blue streak, in my husbands voice, while the male says a few things, in a conure voice! They both can whistle the theme from "Hockey Night In Canada" and " Danny Boy"(which they sometimes mix up and do a line from one and a line from the other), the wolf whistle, the charge whistle and copy the cockatiels whistle. My female puts our last name with all the other birds. I think because my husband calls the dog by her full name, Jiggy is smart enough to put our surname behind all the birds names. Jiggy also immitates the smoke detector, the phone, local and long distance, then answers it in my husbands voice, laughs his laugh and says "Hi! How are you!" before he calls me to the phone. Quinn hasn't mastered too many words. Jiggy is 5 and Quinn is 4. Unfortunately, Quinn mimics all the annoying sounds the other birds make then yells "QUIET!" I have moved my greys to a room where I can shut the door when the TV is on to avoid them learning any bad word. I think it is so sad that some people actually teach bad language to these amazing creatures. It is not fair as some of them will outlive their owners and they will be hard to find a good home for.Jiggy will pretty much say anything if my husband teaches her. She assumes his voice and learns his words to please me. She does not really like my husband.
  18. I think she is a TAG by her beak. Unless she is a very young CAG, her beak would be darker.
  19. Could be a symptom of chlamydia. My bird had it and he had frequent "twitches" which were actually seizures. Make sure he is screened for chlamydia and aspergillosis if you get him. Poor thing.Such a disappointment for you too. The breeder should have this investigated and not sell him until he does. If it is chlamydia, he will have to treat his whole flock so he should be hotfooting it to the vets to see what is up with this bird.
  20. My amazon gets frequent blood work done as she is hypothyroid. they get plenty of blood from a wing feather and it is not as traumatic as from a vein in the neck. There would not be enough blood from a nail clip for a full blood panel. The blood supply in a blood feather is quite profuse and I highly recommend it for any blood work you may need. It is horrid to take it from a vein in the neck when it is not necessary. The sooner you get him out of the pet shop the better. My grey from the pet shop came with Chlamydia and I had to treat all my birds. It was awful. Make sure your avain vet checks for this and also aspergillosis. Both are hard to get rid of.Both of these infections are common in pet shop birds I have found out.Don't mean to scare you but best get them checked and you will not have to go through what I went through.I did not know he had it until he got visable symptoms. When I went back to tell the pet shop, all their birds were gone...guess why.Of course they offered to replace my bird but you all know, you cannot replace after you grow to love them(and spend $2,000 getting them all better!)Take all precautions!
  21. I have both a male and female CAG. My male does not have half the vocabulary my female does. My male also has a flatter head...but he has fallen on it a number of times;) My male is also smaller and darker and does not have as warm a personality as my female does. He will bite whereby the female never bites me. However, the only surefire way to know gender is DNA. Perhaps you could get it done on his checkup. the vet can take blood from a feather without plucking it so it is almost painless.
  22. What an awesome video! So much work put into it! I appreciate your efforts very much.
  23. Where is this poor creature located? If we can find out maybe we can go from there?
  24. My cage also has a spring lock that I have to pull back to open. Although Jiggy can dismantle water bottles and dishes thankfully she does not seem to be bothered to work on this lock. She and Quinn are out of their cage a lot so hopefully the time in the cage isn't so bad for them. If they did manage to get out, it is hard to imagine all the mischeif Quinn would get into as he heads off on foot at every opportunity! Just looking for us usually but one never knows. My friend had a grey once that got out andd it pulled out all the buttons on her couch!
