  1. I get my birds beaks filed at the vet 3 times a year so have not noticed the peeling that you speak of. As soon as they start to look ragged I take them in. I thought this was what you were supposed to do? My greys are 5 and 4 yrs old. My amazons are 27. all of their beaks seem to grow at the same time and like clockwork need their trim one after the other. My conures don't seem to need the filing quite as often, maybe twice a year.
  2. I pay a person I know to move into my house when we are away. The best scenario I think. On the other hand I do board periodically here and would be hard pressed to find how I could "lose" someones bird.
  3. You might like to look at this fellows pictures. He has a free flying grey which he flys outside.http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/
  4. Vinegar and water, wire brush, elbow grease, rinse with hot water. That's all we do at birdgranna's.
  5. Has anyone tried coconut oil?
  6. Good points all. I think I will remove. My walls and floors are easy clean anyway. Has anyone else installed those plastic wall panels where their bird cages are placed? I don't know how I managd without them.My husband has cut them to size to cover the entire bird room walls where the big birds live.Everything literaly just wipes off them. very cheap too at Rona or Home Depot. Anything to make cleaning easier eh guys? I have 29 adult birds and often babies so cleanup must be easy here at birdgranna's;)
  7. Can anyone tell me the bad things about seed guards please? I am not sure I really need them as they only get clogged with poop, so I may be tempted to remove them. I have plastic panels and a very washable floor in my bird rooms making it fairly easy to clean so I may get rid of them if there is an unsafe reason to do so.My birds dont eat seeds so why the heck am I scrubbing those darn seed guards?!
  8. I find almost anything i need on Kijiji. Don't know if you have that classified site where you live Marg.
  9. Ny grey Quinn sleeps in a little tent. He heads right in there at bedtime. He has always slept in one.
  10. We also have a teacup yorkie. We named her Ellie for this reason. Yorkshire Terriers originated from Huddersfield England. It so happens my grandmother was also born there. Her name was Eliza which we decided to name our baby. It has been shortened to Ellie. Elli goes everywhere with me including to work. I work in nursing homes and retirement homes and she is such a big hit with everyone. She is the most awesome beautiful dog.I will try to post pics of her and of her with one of my conures which she plays tag with. I don't have much luck posting pics though:dry:
  11. Thank you Dr. Spock for that post. Very informative. I have a bonded pair one of which is very tame. I hoped to breed them one day. the female is 5 and the male 4.I have had them both since they were babies. I will watch your further post with interest.
  12. If they are out most of the time then would that matter? Sounds as if they use it for sleeping or to be safe when alone so split down the middle would suffice I should think. Mine are out quite a bit and usually flap about when they get out if they have been caged for a bit. I find they tend to roost in their cage or just sleep in it at night.
  13. Mine don't care for little uprights. Too quick and noisey for them i think. I have grandchildren aged 14 down to 2 and they don't like any of em. They don't bite them, well Jiggy doesn't anyway and I don't trust Quinn so I do not let them near him. They are ok to step up for the older ones if they fall off the climber and need a hand though, but not for general socializing.
  14. Would it not be better to split it vertically? You could just put a divider through the centre then remove it when they get used to each other.
  15. I am very lucky my 2 greys are bonded and love each other. My male is 4 and my female is 5. I put my male in with my female right after quarantine when Jiggy was 1 1/2 and Quinn 5 months. they got along instantly and share pretty much the same schedule. They are not totally inseperable as my amazons are, whereby I can go off with one and the other won't care. But they will call for each other if out of sight for too long. My male has always been a bit nippy and has a big hate on for me lately and adores my husband(who doesn't bother much with him). His hormones are kicking in. Jiggy my female is very sweet with me but not so good with anyone else although she won't readily bite anyone. I would love to breed them one day when I am home all the time but I am worried I will lose my sweetie Jiggy forever. Even if they breed just once, does that mean they will never go back to loving their humans too?
  16. My 2 love them. In fact every one of my 30 birds love them...all species. But what a mess:( I save them for special occasions or outside. Luckily I have plastic panels on my bird room walls so they wash down easily.
  17. I am also glad this topic has come up. I find my female greys poopies are very thin, more urine than urites and feces first thing in the morning. I got one on the head the other day as I leaned in to change a dish:S
  18. "If I had a million dollars, I'd buy me a monkey" just like that cutie you pictured. I always wanted children, a parrot and a monkey. Got 2 out of three but LOVE that little monkey! Beautiful pictures!
  19. You need to check that there is no Teflon in your heater.
  20. Mine love em, especially the seeds.
  21. I am more fascinated by "scary" things than frightened. I too believe in after life and the other side. What convinced me apart from a few personal encounters? The book by Rosemary Althea called "the Eagle and The Rose". Those of you in the UK have probably heard of her. I have read her books and heard her speak.Amazing.
  22. Jiggy can sound like the phone. local and long distance, will answer it in my husbands voice saying "Hi. How are ya" and then laughs his laugh and calls me to the phone...over and over and over till I come and tell her how smart she is to which she replies" I AM the smartest bird". If she is really fed up waiting for me to come she will do the smoke detector:S
