    new yummy treat

I use the dried sweet potato bits you find in the baby food aisle for treats. They are small and all my fids seem to like them. They also have strawberry banana and apple ones too. Very handy. Good for baby uprights so likely ok for fids.
  2. "All I have , Is All I Need", by Beth Neilson Chapman
  3. I shed a few tears for you...it is so very hard to lose your bird. He will be over the Rainbow Bridge. Have you heard that beautiful poem? If not , please let me know and I will send it to you. It has given me comfort before.
  4. Your poor wife...if she is still around;)
  5. I find my grey Jiggy has problems saying her "s" sound ie. she says "I am the martest bird". I knew a beautiful grey called Freya so I vote for that name!
  6. You finally get to sleep, and sleep for a week and when you wake up you are in a soft velvet lined box... I wish my husband would say those 4 magical words...sure buy it honey.
  7. Jiggy and Quinn do that when they want to be picked up.
  8. SMALL ROOM FOR FREEZER AND DISHWAHER!!!??:woohoo: my aviary outside is just 2 rooms with a whole bunch of toys. I have a sink and a little fridge in my bird room in the house and I thought I was doing pretty good;) My big birds only go out to play outside in the summer in my aviary as I live in a subdivision and I would worry about theft. Unfortunately an outdoor aviary in Canada is only good for 5 months of the year:(
  9. Good advice from everyone. My CAG Quinn makes the sound of the smoke detector going off! I try to ignore him and he usually gives up, but every so often I have to peak in and check to make sure it is him. My husband likes well done toast so the darn thing goes off all the time:angry:
  10. You find the time to go back to Alaska but your boat hits an iceburg and you are stranded with a polar bear on a chunk of ice. I wish I could find a harlequin macaw for $100.00
  11. You get to see a NY Giants game but you get hit in the head with a ball and get knocked out. I wish I could keep weight off and be nice and slim all time.
  12. Regarding night fright in tiels...I have unfortunately lost a tiel to night fright. I believe she had a heart attack. We were out late one night and I had forgotten to turn on the night light:( and when I came home she was dead. Her partner was sitting on the bottom of the cage with her, so sad. I blame myself as I did not leave the night light on thinking we would not be too late. I have no experiance with quakers. Tiels are not too loud, although i could never hear them above the din of my conures anyway;)
  13. I feed my greys Zupreem fruit pellets along with a diet I described in another post called "OK I think I've got this right" I believe.
  14. Although I am not against wing clipping( some of my fids are clipped for training purposes) perhaps your tiel should keep his wings in order to escape should he have to. I have 6 tiels and 8 large parrots. I never let the tiels out when the big guys are out and I am anxiously awaiting the finishing of a new room for my bigger guys to move in to. My tiels all have flight feathers now but they were clipped when I was training them.
  15. Is this a new cage for her? Was she caged before? Perhaps this is a bigger cage or smaller cage than she is used to? When I first got Jiggy she would poke her head through the bars at the top of her cage. Used to worry me to death that she would hang herself but she eventually stopped. Her head barely fit! Perhaps some cammomile tea at bedtime for her;) (and you!)
  16. Thank you for the picture! We have Costco here so I will look there. Great tip! Thanks:)
  17. Quinn is a foot eater with his pellets and loses most on the way to his beak. Jiggy is a dish dumper so I have to have dishes that screw to the cage. They both take one bite out of their fresh food and toss it. I now put news paper on the bottom of their cage on top of the grate. As the day goes on they "forage" around on it and pick up the pellets. The fresh food I pick up ONCE and put it back in the dish and remove it after an hour. I have plastic paneling nailed to the walls in their room for easy clean up.Good thing they are lovable 'cause they sure are messy;)
  18. Where did you get these? I have bought frozen soy beans but they were not on a branch...they were just frozen soybeans. I have been buying caned ones as my greys seem to like those. I had never heard of Edamame. Health food store maybe?
  19. I make my fids a mixture of chick peas, soy beans, kidney beans, fava beans, corn and brown rice, warm, pretty well each day. On Sunday they get poached egg. Every morning they eat a tiny square of peanut butter on toast. They love hot peppers and pomegranet (sp?). They enjoy berries of any kind and for a treat I froze some gooseberries for them and give it to them frozen..they love it. They also relish fresh figs when in season and like dried ones too. They love sugar snap peas, apples, almonds(which are very good for greys as they are high in calcium) and walnuts. You may have read that I do not give peanuts in the shell to my birds as one of my amazons picked up Aspergillosis from peanut shells, so I would strongly advise you NOT to offer him those. For a "good bird" treat I give the odd Fruit Loop. My birds eat chicken and beef and also the bones of these meats. The marrow is very good for them and the meat high in calcuim and protein. Dandelion greens are fun for them to eat. I tie a bunch in their cage if I have to put them away during the day. Keeps them busy while I am out.So good for them too. When I feel guilty for leaving them too long I give then a few sunflower seeds;) and they know they will get them too! So funny! My greys are good eaters. My amazons are far more fussy. However, my greys are way messier than the amazons! Plastic panels behind THEIR cage! What a mess they make with their food! I know how excited you must be feeling! Good luck with your new fid:)
  20. I agree that it is time to clip those wings until he is more co operative with your boyfriend. I had a conure that would not step up or behave at all. As soon as I clipped his wings he was much better and appreciated me "rescuing" him from the floor or wherever he landed. He grew to actually cuddle with me and turned out to be a very good bird. He prefered my husband as does one of my greys, so it was patience patience patience. But the wing clipping was the clincher that worked.
  21. I have 2 greys. My amazons are Tommy and BJ, both girls. they are 27. They are very good birds. They frighten easily though and are terrified of hats! They only say a few things but whistle and finish each others whistles. Tommy is very cuddly but BJ is not so much. They love to be misted and hate it to end. They thrive on routine whereby all my other birds are pretty good with bumps in the routine. They never bite, but they give little soft nips if they don't want to be picked up by someone. They are friends with the greys, kind of. They don't preen each other but they sit on the same play gym. They are not fighters. If one of the small birds lands on their cage they just look at it, whereby the greys go for the toes,,,"hey! get off our house!" The amazons are very vocal around 5-6 pm.otherwise quiet,( well quieter than my conures that's for sure!) They enjoy watching childrens programs. One of my amazons was prone to obesity. She has just recently got over the awful disease of Aspergillosis and lost 71 gms. She is also hypothyroid and has a few other blood abnormalities as the result of this illness and the meds she had to take. (She got Asper from peanuts in the shell). I have just adjusted their diet to include beef and chicken and Tommy must have a bone with marrow several times a week to build up her calcium levels.Their diet is full of wholesome foods along with pellets. They were seed eaters when I got them and it took almost a year to get them onto pellets. They eat mostly fresh food though. My amazons are delightful, loving birds. They are predictable. I can safely leave them out of their cages when I am not home as they never leave their cage top unless I move them. They have a way to climb back up if they get off it for some reason. If I left my one grey out when I was not home he would get into all sorts of mischief. The female grey would be ok but has to go in her cage when he does or the male screams. I leave their wings in the winter but they really don't fly. Their wings were always clipped by their first owner. I clip them in the summer as I take the birds outside in the summer. They LOVE to chew wood. I found this out after they polished off a window ledge one day.Now they have fresh pieces of wood every week which they rip into shreds. They love fresh figs when I can get them. Gotta love the DYHA's.
  22. Hi Joe. I have 2 DYH Amazons aged 27.Ask away...
  23. This is a fascinating post that I had known nothing about. thanks for the great info.
  24. I found the map on the profile page wrong for me as it has me in Ontario California. I live in Barrie, Ontario Canada. Wish I did live in California as Canadian winter right around the corner:(
  25. My 27 year old amazon Tommy has recovered from aspergillosis she got from peanuts in the shell. It was a terrible time for her and for me. The mortality rate is high for this fungus and we were very lucky to beat it.She lost 71 grams in weight and grew to mistrust me as I had to give her meds twice a day. She is now terrified of towels as I had to towel her to give her the meds. She was ill for over 4 months. She may have permanent liver damage. My heart broke to watch her so sick she could not feed herself. It is a miracle that she is clear of it. I will never even have a peanut in the shell in my house again. Please throw out your peanuts. It is just not worth the risk.
