  1. Are you getting two cages? Unless they are a bonded pair they each need a cage. I know how you feel about the cage. When I rehomed Timber 17 months ago he came in a nasty, old, small cage. He was attached to it though and it took almost 8 months to get him to accept the new cage.
  2. Hello and welcome! Give us some more info about your birds, like names, ages, etc. We also love pictures
  3. No pro here, but I don't think you need to "register" your parrots.
  4. Jurey, the trust thing just takes time. A week is no time at all in "grey time." Most birds will step up easily from the floor, even if they won't any other time. That is normal.
  5. I'm so sorry for your loss Wayne! God bless.
  6. Hello and welcome to you and Zazu Just talk softly to him and give it time!
  7. How cool is that! Glad your conure found her forever home
  8. What judygram said is important to this situation. When Timber regurgs as a "love offering" it is very controlled and obvious. I don't encourage it, but it has happened.
  9. Hello and welcome Shane Keep us posted on your search and feel free to ask any questions you have. Good luck and God bless
  10. I think you make a good point. I don't know how many people expect their bird to be like Alex, but I'm sure some do. Not that they are willing to devote that kind of time to it, as you pointed out. I didn't really have any expectations when I brought Timber home. I knew he said some words, and he ran through most of his vocabulary on the way home (didn't speak for about 3 days after we finally got here). Because of all the youtube videos of parrots like Einstein and Alex, I can see why some might have unrealistic expectations.
  11. I don't know what a mung bean looks like so I'm not sure if Timber eats them or not. I keep sprouted seed available all the time with his other fresh food. His other bean mixes are cooked. I just got curious when I saw this question as to whether there were any beans in his mix. I knew I'd seen garbanzo in there, but didn't realize there were any other beans.
  12. I'm curious now. Following is what is in the mix I sprout for Timber (Big Bird mix from sprout people): Bird Sprout Mix - Big Bird Almonds (shelled), Sunflower (in shell), Wheat, Spelt (hulled), Kamut, Triticale, Barley (hulless), Oats (hulless), Millet, Buckwheat (in hull), Brown Rice, Green Lentils, Crimson Lentils, French Blue Lentils and Red Lentils, Adzuki Beans, Mung Beans, Black Garbanzos, Brown Garbanzos and Large Beige Garbanzos, Green Peas, Speckled Peas and Yellow Peas, Blue and Yellow Corn
  13. No expert here but I think it depends on what "fat" we are talking about. Most of us give some red palm since it is a large part of their native diet. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in
  14. Neat! That pic reminded me of last Christmas (our first with Timber). He was so excited about all the excitement. I had him on his playstand in the living room where we were opening presents. One of the kids said "mom, did you notice that Timber is on the couch behind you?" I hadn't, but he was peering over my shoulder intently at the package I was opening. It was early days in our relationship then. This year, I hope he will open one of his gifts himself now that he is more comfortable.
  15. Yes, Isaac looks great! Love his "WHAT???" expression. Thanks for sharing
  16. Cute videos! My thought was, considering the progress he was making with the pumpkin, Teddy would pack a nasty bite!
  17. What a pretty bird! I have no experience with plucking, so can't really comment on that.
  18. Timber is much more vocal some days than others, for reasons only he knows. I'm sure he has a reason, but I have yet to figure it out!
  19. LOL! Reminds me of a few incidents with my cats and Timber. There has never been a problem, but that is probably because as soon as contact is imminent I'm descending on them both like a screaming banshee... The cat and bird both freeze and look at me like I am totally insane, and are more scared of me than each other. It does distract them though! I have to wonder if that was the first time the hawk landed on the cage or if it had happened before. I was trying to figure out why the owner was so calm. I know I wouldn't have been and I certainly wouldn't have let the hawk hang for any length of time.
  20. I believe your relationship with Dolly will improve but it often takes a lot of time. I have had Timber for about 17 months, and it was only last week that he stepped up for hubby without bloodletting. They have made a lot of progress but it has taken a long time. When it was early days for us, Timber would step up for me but wanted to bite when I tried to put him down. Not sure what that means or if Dolly would react the same way, but that is my experience. I know what you mean about the body language, it is hard to interpret sometimes. Only an avian vet can tell you for sure if there is a physical problem. Is Dolly eating well? Are her droppings normal? Is she sleeping too much? Those are things you can watch for, but they do hide illness. If I had any doubts I'd be off to the vet. I always take the better safe than sorry approach with Timber, because they can go down so quickly.
  21. Here is a thread about how to use photobucket http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?89533-HOW-TO-POST-PICTURES-photo-tuturial I just go to advanced post and use the attachment feature there.
  22. I would just like to point out that not only are grey's expensive to buy, they are expensive to keep. The cost of the proper food, toys, vet bills etc. is more than I expected and is quite high. I'm not trying to discourage you, but you need to take that into consideration when budgeting too.
  23. Read the directions that came with the bulb, from what I've read online it varies from bulb to bulb. The one I use says 18-24" during the burn in period (don't remember how long that is) then 12-18" after burn in period. The rays from the light are still effective even if you can't see the light itself. If your window is treated with UV protection (I think that is the right term) like mine are, your bird won't get any helpful rays through it. I know what you mean about the bird moving around and wondering if the light does that much good. I'd say some is better than none, so my policy is to leave the light on and assume he gets at least some benefit!
