  1. I am in a rural area and do not have access to an avian certified vet. Like you, we have a vet who sees birds (several of them from what I've seen in the office). I feel confident in taking Timber there for "well bird" checks. If Timber were to be ill or I had serious concerns about him, I would probably make the trip. My vet has indicated that she knows her limits, and would be the first to send me to an avian vet if she thought it was warranted.
  2. So sorry Ray! I have been on vacation and am just know reading the forums. I have no words to express my sadness over your loss. God bless and keep you and your wife through your grief.
  3. My sympathy on your loss! We lost our 17 year old Callie two years ago, and I still miss him and think about him. My comfort is in knowing he lived a long (for a cat) full life. He was loved and he knew it. I'm sure Sunshine felt the same!
  4. Beautiful pics! Thanks for sharing an congratulations on your harness success!
  5. Another vote for IBS here...
  6. I imagine Dave will be along and am sure you haven't been deserted. I have no baby experience so can't help, but what a cutie!
  7. Hello and welcome to you and Gabby! What a beautiful baby
  8. Neat video, thanks for sharing! I love hearing them talk...
  9. Hello and welcome to you and Storm! As the others have said, you need to take your time and Storm will come around. They can take a long time to trust. Good luck and God bless
  10. I would be too. Timber is headed for a nail trimming within 3 weeks.
  11. Thought this was great!
  12. That is Timber's favorite vegetable. I cut the stem off (enough to get the bottom leaves), cut about 3/4 inch off the top, strip the outer base leaves, wash it very well, then I pull it open so it looks like a flower. Hang it on a skewer or put it in the bottom of the cage. He actually prefers it in the bottom of the cage. He will attack it, chew on it, shred it, and when the day is done there is nothing left but a bit of the stem in a leaf or two. And I actually see him eating at least a bit of it!
  13. Yikes, no help here! Hopefully Dave or someone who knows will come along...
  14. Nilah's "voice over" made that so funny!
  15. Muse is right. I looked at your post and saw 1 pound 4 ounces, not 1.4. Ha. I use an online calculator as well. Just google "pounds to grams" and it brings a bunch of calculators up.

It's always a guessing game with any kind of food. Like my kids, Timber likes what I don't think he will want and doesn't like what I think he will love!
  17. I understand your concern about getting Alex in the carrier for the vet visit. When I brought Timber home, I had a vet visit scheduled the next day. He wasn't stepping up, didn't know us, and was not inclined to be cooperative. Yes, we had to towel him. Fast forward to today, it has been two years and he still doesn't like going into the carrier. Since he goes to the vet every six months whether he likes it or not, he has to go in it. One thing that might work for you is to get him on the floor with the carrier then guide him into it with the towel. If he is like Timber, he will go the opposite direction of the towel, so he might go in the carrier to get away from it. Do you see what I mean? We can sometimes "steer" Timber into the carrier by holding the towel in front of him. It is his choice of evils (in his mind) the towel or the carrier. Last resort, there are times when you have no option but the dreaded towel.
  18. LOL That's exactly right! I get the "look" when I check out with one artichoke, one ear of sweet corn, one sweet potato etc. So far, they haven't dared to ask. One new checker picked up the artichoke by its stem and said, "What is this anyway?" Ha.
  19. No, don't build a nesting box for a lone bird. I remember Dave saying that was a bad idea. I really don't have anything to add to what the others have said. My bird rules the roost here and pretty much does as he pleases. We always say he's training us rather than the other way around!
  20. Great that Alex is eating Harrison's. A good quality seed mix should be offered too. There is a post on here about sunflower seeds. If memory serves, the important thing with sunflower seeds is moderation. Some seed mixes have too much sunflower and not enough other quality seed. Keep experimenting with the veggies. You'll find some he likes and some he doesn't. I keep offering the ones Timber doesn't like because sometimes, well, he changes his mind! Also, they prefer some raw, some steamed etc. If he rejects raw broccoli try a piece of steamed when you make it for yourself, etc. Sometimes they won't eat it in their bowl but may eat it from a skewer hanging in the cage. There are endless variations to try. My goal is to get a variety of food down Timber's throat, and he's picky so it is a job. At only 4 days, his refusal to step up is no surprise to me. When I took Timber a couple of years ago (rehomed) it took about 3 months for him to start stepping up readily when he wasn't on the floor. Time and patience wins the day. They often take a while to trust. You have to earn it.
  21. Hello and welcome to you and Alex It is my understanding that walnuts are fine. Just make sure they are unsalted, fresh and human grade. Post some pics and tell us more about yourself and Alex when you have a chance.
  22. Mine just arrived Brat Birds. I had to order recently and that's the brand I picked too. I've been seeing a lot of stuff online about health benefits for people too, which probably contributes to increased sales and distribution.
