  4. (Maggie writing for Jay) Here are some questions: What part of the body is the smell coming from? Could there be a chunk of fruit or something caught under his cage paper that has fermented? Has anything different been done around him? You need to find the cause of this odor right away. If he was passing nitrogen, it would smell like ammonia. Alcohol odor is released when it evaporates. Is your baby eating good? What does his poop look like? Thanks, Jay (Maybe Dave007 can answer this?)

Hi, Maggie here, FYI: . :)To determine the sex of a human child each baby has a pair of chromosomes that are either XX (female) or XY (male). In birds this is the opposite way around so it is the female that has the XY combination and thus it is her that determines what sex each chick will be. So basically it gets down to the point that the cock bird carries two 'X' chromosomes while the hen has only one.
  8. Hi, Maggie here, here is a wonderful site on all things Cockatiels, we have visited them for years....Thanks Maggie http://cockatielcottage.net/
  9. Hi, Maggie here, in each room there are sticky's with very much what your talking about. From food, health, housing etc, pulse suggestions from all members. Talon [Penny and the other Mod's] has done a wonderful job of organizing this Greyt forum. click on a sticky of your choice and in the room that your concern is located, and the whole world of this Forum opens up to you......You can also type in a word such as "food" or "heath" in the search box... Thanks Maggie..
  10. Thank you Wingy for your great post! I'd just like to add a couple of things to this...keep in mind what we, as responsible pet owners, can and can't feed our parrots. Most charts go by cups or ounces so basically our parrots would eat about 1-2 ounces which would be 1/8th cup or less a day, compared to what a human would eat. Another example: An average human should have no more than three walnuts in a day. A parrot, the size of a grey, should have one half a walnut a day. The important thing is, not the total consumption in any given meal but a bite of this and a bite of that throughout the day adds to the total consumption of the nutrients they receive. So, a little veggies, some nuts, some pasta, some beans, brown rice, lentils, a little seed mix, a few pellets and the all important sunlight satisfies the needs and requirements for a healthy parrot. Add red palm oil to that and you're on the road to health and vitality. What they don't eat today, they will eat tomorrow. Balance, supply and demand are cornerstones to a healthy parrot. 11. Well, Salsa is certainly getting into the whole Primadonna attitude and boy does she use it (Heaven help us!)...she is insanely jealous of Joe and since he does not fly around with her like Spock did, she goes into these rages where she will dive-bomb Tango and Joe with a Pterodactyl cry and get them all going...(OMG!!!) The only one that she is in fear of is our tiny Conure named Loki (he has everyone buffaloed....LOL) When Joe is on Jay's or my shoulder, she will fly over, gives us a huge pinch on the back of our neck (OW!!!) and then fly off, Laughing while saying "Salsa's a Good Girl"!! Her favorite new song (that she made up, melody and all) consists of singing in an operatic voice "Okay, Okay, Spock...Okay, okay, okay. Joe...." well you get the idea. She goes on for days (it seems like it anyway) and Joe will make sounds like clapping and tell her to "Shut up Salsa". LOL...Salsa has developed a taste for anything and everything under the sun, (the couch, the sink, the bed, the closets,) including soaps...(Oh Lord!) (Calgon, take me away...ooops! No, Salsa will just try to sample that too!) Maggie

    Help asap!

I am going to suggest...Cockatiels greet every day with beautiful songs...when we have an occasional yard sale, people always comment about the wonderful songs they sing. Remember, the female only makes a couple of whistles, it is the male with the songs and melodies... (Sometimes, you will find a female singer...) Maggie
  13. Hi Momo, Sweet potatoes or yams are the best. White potatoes must always be cooked and if you do feed them to your baby, no more than a teaspoon. They are not very good for any parrot and they must always be cooked. Never give the eye of the potato to a parrot. Just keep trying, our Joe doesn't like to get his beak wet either LOL and it has taken over two years for him to eat his veggies. if it available you can also use boiled cauliflower, squash or boiled carrots instead of sweet potatoes. Boiled broccoli is extremely strong to parrots..a little goes a long ways. Raw broccoli or broccoli stems are a great source of vitamins and nutrients that they need. Thanks, Maggie
  14. Joe can be as demanding as any three year old LOL...yesterday, I was making their dinner and Joe had been yammering away. When I was dishing up the plates, he demanded "Want a good nut!" and I replied that he had to have a good dinner first. He kept at it..."Want a good nut!!" I just kept telling him "No, good dinner first". The third time he said "I want a good nut!!!!". Again, I replied "Joe, you can have a good nut after your good dinner." He thought for a moment and then said "Fine!" and moseyed over to his plate to eat. It was too funny...I had to go into the other room to laugh. After he ate a fair amount, he again asked "Want a good nut?" I guess he knows what he wants and is not afraid to ask for it...LOL...
  15. Cockatoo's Angels White Wings [black too] Cockatoos, considered the pigeons of the Australian Outback, are native to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, there are over 40 species of cockatoo. These can be divided into two main groups – the white cockatoos and the black cockatoos. indigenous to Australia. The most obvious external feature of a cockatoo is the erectile crest that raises immediately when alarmed or excited. They can live up to 100 years old and make wonderful companions although they do need a significant amount of attention from their owner. They are very cuddly and have great personalities. They can be very loud and although this should never be eliminated, there are training methods to cut down on the noise and yelling.
  16. Thank you so much Janet, I didn't know these things.......Maggie
  17. Hi everyone....Salsa here...Well, I am in trouble now...they found out about the hole behind my cage in the wall. I couldn't help it. It was there, I was there, it looked good, it's getting bigger everyday... I just love to tease that big white bird called Tango. The way I figure it, life is short so go for the gusto, the world is a wonderful place and the seeds are always better in someone else's cage. She always has the best food...I know that Jay says that we all have the same stuff but I know she gets the special stuff. She usually ignores me..(hey, I don't say anything when she spends hours in my cage, chewing up my dish, eating my toys, taking in her wood and eating it there...) Once in a while though, she will come over just to bully me. I make her get all the way over to me before I fly off...I love to tease her...hehehe...she thinks just because she chased me away, she's the big bird and she always rings her giant bell after. I love to make Jay jump. I fly over over and land on his shoulder and nip his neck before flying off. Oh, the sounds he makes...ha ha ha! Maggie's no fun anymore. She used to have these shiny things in her ears and these things that I could pull on out of her hair. I heard her say that she has to pull everything off before she comes in the house because of me... Joey stands his ground now, I can't intimidate him anymore. He grabs my tail feathers every chance he gets! What's with that? Oops, they are coming...and yelling...something about the hole in the bathroom cabinet???? Oh oh...
  18. Hola Cricket (I loooove that word..hehehe) Have you tried wall? Or ears? They are really good! Bathroom cabinets are good too. I don't think they have noticed the bathroom yet... hehehe...oh oh, here comes lunch...Do you like sugar peas? Manana....Salsa
  19. Hola Everybody!! (That means hello in Spanish. I just learned that!) Spock showed me how to use the computer and how to write everybody but it has not been out and open until now. I am taking it over! It has been quiet since Spock left. He told me he had worlds to explore but I didn't think he would go. I miss flying around the room with him. I try it now but Joey just gives me that look...(you know what I mean)...and says "Salsa!!". Tango, that big white bird, just yells and yells...it is worth it just to see her flap her wings and jump up and down..hehehe.. I've been practicing the Vulcan Death Grip like Spock showed me and I think it is working because when I hold onto Maggie's fingers, they turn a pretty purple and then white.... ooooh, pretty! I tried the Vulcan Mind Meld but I think I am doing something wrong...I can't remember whether Spock said bite or don't bite...hhhhmmm... My favorite thing to do all day is sing. I like to make up my own songs and I do sing pretty good if I do say so myself! My next favorite thing to do is explore...I looooove to go into Tango's cage 'cause she always has good things to eat and the sticks where her food bowls go twist around. I love to undo things and open things and these are just too easy...until Maggie comes and takes all the thingies (nuts and bolts) away. What a "Vida Loca" I live...eat, play, fly, eat, sing, chew on walls, nap, play, sing, more walls...

  24. Maggie here, typing for Jay. Big sorry, when I read neck, I thought air sack not crop, old age thats all...My apologies Jay
  25. Maggie here, typing for Jay. Toast and butter are extremely unhealthy for our parrots. The sugar in the bread is equal to 4 tsp! Parrots can't digest the butter, they are "Lactose" intolerant. If you wish to give your parrot toast, give them a quarter slice and spread Red Palm oil or peanut butter or "Pesto"...Thanks Jay [Maggie] '
