  1. Hi...Maggie here, typing for Jay...A 'Zon and a Grey, the doer and the thinker....what's going on? This is part of the bonding process. Simon says Kazoo's been getting all her love for long enough. I want my share of on-demand love. This is especially true when Greys and 'Zons are free in the same household. This basically tells me that they are settling in after all these months into their environment and have accepted you as their "parront". The best way to handle this is equal quality time...let one roost with you and talk, play, or just sit and feed treats. Usually it is best to start with the Grey since the 'Zon is more self-reliant. Take your other baby after taking the Grey wherever their favorite spot is and giving a treat, and repeat the same thing. Usually after time, both parrots will adapt to this. There will be times that they might need a little extra loving. Instead of treating them as bully/victim, treat them as two young'uns that need equal love from you. Remember, a Grey and a 'Zon both think and apply their thoughts to actions so treat their thoughts of wanting love and comfort. Many Grey/Zons that we have worked with including Spock, Joe and Salsa, have gone through this, Salsa and Joe right now. Thank you, Jayd (Thanks, Maggie)
  2. Hi, Maggie here...Thanks so much...lol...it is so funny to watch. Joe stands on the freezer on one leg, Salsa stands on one leg on Joe's cage and Tango stands on Salsa's cage on one leg with a Wacky Mac held in their other raised foot. Spock used to stand on the top of the fridge and they all wait patiently while i take the jar of Wacky Mac around to each of them. They all choose their own flavor out of the jar and peace reigns for about 5 minutes as they relax and enjoy. When they are done, they shake their feathers all around and pandemonium reigns once more....LOL....
  3. Thanks, yes, it's just play make believe time, sometimes they let out a Pterodactyl yell while doing this. LOL
  4. Some new things have developed over the last few weeks...Joe's mind is expanding. Our little rescue Grey has become very asserting in what he says now. The other morning, I had been up for a few hours with them and Joe had been asking to see Papa. I had told him numerous times that Papa was still night-night. Giving me the impression that he was fed up, he stated "Wake up Papa. Go Papa now!!" Earlier that morning I was sitting and having a cup of coffee, while talking to all the birds, telling them about all the tasks that I had to do that day. Joe apparently thought I had been sitting long enough and he popped up with "Go to work!" and then laughed. A couple of days ago, I got Jay home from the doctor and took him to the bedroom before getting them out of their cages. As I went to open Joe's cage, he looked at me and said "Papa!". I told him Papa's in bed. He said "Go Papa" and flew off to the bedroom. I took off after him. He landed on Jay's chest. "Papa go bye-bye. No! Joe gotta go bye-bye Papa". I believe he was mad at Jay and if Jay was going to go bye-bye, he wanted to go too! Later on that day, Jay was sitting in his chair in the living room and Joe was on his favorite perch in the kitchen. Joe called out to Jay "Come here Papa. Want a good nut! Now!!!!" As a side note: Tango, our extra-large 'Too will respond with a head shake no or a head shake yes to questions asked of her. She has been doing this for quite a while. Example: If I ask her if she wants to step up, she will shake her head no and walk away if she does not want to come with me. If she wants to step up, she will shake her head yes and lift her foot to step up on my hand. When it is time to go to bed and I tell her it is time to go, she will emphatically shake her head no and runs across the top of her cage. If she is cooperative, she will shake her head yes and climb down into the cage. Is Joe rubbing off on her? Hmmm.....
  5. Hi, Jay here...Abundant feeding and consistency is extremely important. Only weigh your baby in the morning after the big poop and before eating any food. You are stressing yourself out by weighing the baby so much and you are not getting the true picture of what is going on. Keep a bowl of dry pellets and dry seeds 24/7. Change the pellets every 5-7 days until you find one she will eat. This may take years and she may never develop a taste for them. Buy a good non-sunflower seed mix. Remove all peanuts and shelled peanuts from the mix. Both Royal Large Hookbill, Volkman and Topp's have great mixes without sunflower seeds. You can give 3 tbs of sunflower seeds a day as a treat. It is very good for your bird. Hi, Maggie here...Try this in the morning and evening...serve warm...smash (cooked, mashed sweet potato with a bit of organic low sodium peanut butter) or you can make your smash with squash cooked and mashed). Yellow, butternut and summer squashes all taste different along with yellow and dark sweet potatoes. You can make different types until you find one the baby will enjoy. This is served 100-109 degrees and you can feed it with a spoon or give it to your baby to eat on its own. On the same plate, add cooked brown rice, cooked Orzo pasta (or mini elbow, star, alphabet or vermicelli all cooked), yellow and green split peas and lentils (all cooked), fresh or frozen cooked black eyed peas, organic garbanzo beans (chick peas) rinsed extremely well (only 2-3 beans 2-3 times a week), scrambled egg (in olive oil blotted) twice a week. There will be waste...your baby will let you know what they like and their tastes will change. What they don't like today they might eat tomorrow. In the afternoon, during their rest period in their cage, put a whole leaf of dandelion, kale, Swiss chard (white), bok choy, carrot or beet tops, mustard greens...all soaked, rinsed and served wet in organic apple cider vinegar. You can hang them or loop them through the cage bars for a foraging experience and Vitamin D. On a small saucer, put one grape or one chunk of apple or one chunk of fresh pear or peach, 3 non-sulfured raisins and one thin slice of orange (any one of those plus one slice of orange) every day. You can add a couple chunks of sugar snap peas, chunked zucchini or squash, chunked partially cooked carrot, chunk of broccoli stalk and flower, red or yellow bell pepper (chunk, no green)...remember, you are only putting in a small small amount and you are giving them something to look forward to. You can leave this in their cage for a couple of hours the same time daily...this can be fed to them throughout their life...there will be waste until it is established. Later on down the line, you can try some red palm oil. Nothing to worry about right now...Back to Jay... Hi, Nuts, sunflower seeds are an extremely important part of their diet. One almond a day can do more good than you can imagine. They supply EFA's (essential fatty acids), a half of a walnut, unsalted pistachios in the shell, roasted unsalted shell-less peanuts, pine nuts, unsalted roasted cashews...these are the best treats. This diet can be fed from a fledgling to an octogenarian...the difference between the parrots is the amount of protein, fruits and fat in their diets. As your baby develops their eating habits, they will let you know what they like and don't like...one last thing...parrots do not live on pellets alone...Thanks, Jay P.S. Don't be afraid, take the baby to a vet...

  8. I should have mentioned this earlier, this is just our feelings on this matter. We don't believe in clipping/trimming except in a medical emergency or some such reason. This is a decision that's up to each person and we all should respect it even if we don't agree. Thanks Maggie and Jay
  9. Hi, Maggie and Jay here. Most of us do our own trimming/clipping and nail trimming, it's just part of having a parrot, because of this, toweling isn't always necessary but is used when it is needed. A lot of people will introduce a emery board to there parrot and when the parrot is in the cage they will slide the board lightly across the nails while the parrot is holding on to the perch or cage bars, as time goes on you can finger perch and file them, no stress... Beaks are never trimmed unless because of deformities or broken. The beak is much to sensitive piece of the bird anatomy to disturb. Thanks Maggie and Jay
  10. Hi, I'm going to be a party pooper. PVC is poison, Always use CPVC, it only costs a couple of penny s more. Please buy your ropes and twines from a bird safe store and only use "Vegetable Tanned Leather.. Thanks Maggie.
  11. Our prayers are with you...please keep us informed... Jay and Maggie

  13. Hola!....Salsa....I'm hereeee!!!! Babe (Maggie) says....stuck!
  14. When it comes to Avian handling Sarasota is Spot on, this is something we learned in school in many classes, science, psychology, humanity and animal abuse classes [non-school]. Something else we learned is etiquette, net and personal. Please re-frame from telling a member what they are missing or if they don't know what their talking about, this in no form is ever proper. You never grab a parrot or dog etc by the leg, it can cause physical harm and possible mental injure. Your opinion was "I see nothing wrong with the host telling the owner to take the bite, because you know sometimes you just have to for the benefit of the bird." Thank you for that, some of us disagree, that is what this forum is about. You stated: "The owner now has a bit more confidence with her parrot." I agree, she has learned how to Manhandle and cause possible unintentional abuse to her parrot... Maggie
  15. Hi Nancy, This is where problems may occur....when a member might not read all the threads thoroughly and then posts an off-topic response, there tends to be confusion. This might be better suited to off-topic discussions since this thread deals exclusively with birds and anesthesia. Thanks, Maggie P. S. As an Off-topic rely to your rely...I agree and think you were very commendable for your handling of the situation with your dogs.
  16. :confused:Hi, Dave is correct, with one exception in our case,[Our weird Parrots] We had 5 large parrots in the same room before Spock left, we have 4 now. Spock and Joe would talk to Jay and I jn english, sometimes we would have 2, 3, and 4 way conversations. Spock and Joe would have conversations with each other in both English and parrotese. The 2 TOO's don't speak to much and Salsa will speak to who ever will listen! We think this is rare. Thanks Maggie
  17. We can't afford to lose this information, please stick this.....Maggie
  18. She wants those chicken bones lol!!!
  19. I hate to admit it but Jay and I are at that age when everything is gone, thinning, or purchased. Yesterday morning I was talking to Jay and I was in the process of getting ready to insert my teeth. Salsa swooped down, grabbed them and flew off with me in hot pursuit! She landed on the back end of the freezer and watched me, chewing calmly while I struggled with the stepladder. Jay, Joe and Tango were no help either. They just stood by laughing as hard as they could! Aarrrgggh!:rolleyes: Maggie
  20. Maggie, and Jayd. Yes my friend, six is a mature and older Grey, but as Dan description is accurate. Some Grey's are thinkers not talkers so sit back and talk to them as you would another person in your home. As far as a Grey [NANCY] greys follow the same development from the age of 1-5, as a human child, this isn't possible, it's a scientific fact that the accelerated level in a Grey and other animals of rapid development in the early years is at a different rate than a human child. As a Grey ages, it's ageing process slows, where a humans excel rates. Thanks ...Jayd
  21. Maggie and Jay here. Grey's are one of the few parrot that rely on Thought out speech opposed to copy speech. Your Zons are more into copy cat speech...Thanks Maggie and Jayd
