  1. WeatherEvents.net ‏@weather_events Tragic news circulating that highly respected storm chasers Tim Samaras & Carl Young were killed in the El Reno OK tornado yesterday. Higgins Storm Chasing Heart breaking and tragic news for the storm chasing and weather community today with the sad loss of storm chasers Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and Carl Young. Tim Samaras was a weather scientist with National Geographic and starred on the Discovery Channel's series Storm Chasers with team Twistex, his son Paul Samaras was a talented photographer and also starred alongside his father Tim and Carl Young was a meteorologist and also part of the Twistex team. It is believed their car was struck by the El Reno, Oklahoma rain wrapped EF3 tornado yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends as we mourn this tragic loss with them. May they rest in peace and watch and protect us all from above. Do keep in mind these people have added so much to our knowledge of how these storms build, form and move helping all of us be a little smarter and safer.
  2. Some great advice given by everyone so far but keep firmly in mind that each grey like us humans is a very unique individual. As arule most are not cuddle birds, but some are, some are talkers some never do. Some are always going to pluck and some never pluck again once they are healthy and comfortable but we love them either way. Some have baggage from previous homes that can take years to unpack, others are happy and at home from day one no matter their history. I live with 4 rescued or rehomed Greys 3 CAG 1 TAG Pookie is 24 years old and came to us from a couple that had always loved her but needed to downsize their flock she and I bonded from the start but she had a history of nailing the husband. Joe arrived under odd circumstances as his owner was quite convinced he was possessed by something unholy he adjusted quickly and adores my middle son and is a super talker, have no signs of possession other than him possessing our hearts. Whisper was a confiscation from a road side zoo before she came to live with me she is a cuddle girl but bites most every one else, not much of a talker but a very smart girl. Smartee Pants is a little guy even for a Timnah and has a backwards twisted foot, he was found by a swimming pool looking for water was dehydrated and underweight, have never found his family. He is bonded to my youngest son and is the one to bully the other birds a very funny little guy loves his head rubs and thinks he is a hat. These are just a few examples from our home of life with recycled grey birds.
  3. Welcome and look forward to the photos of your Shelby all my birds came to me as adults so I really enjoy the stories of personality development and pictures of every one's baby birds.
  4. Think of it this way, in the wild available food would change from the wet season to the dry season. Fruits, fresh shoots, leaves, flowers, leaf buds and insects are all more available in the wet season. Seed, Grains, tubers, bark and grubs in the dry season. Considering these seasonal diet variations might encourage us to think along those lines and provide a similar waxing and waning in what we feed. A thought to consider at least.
  5. Researchers find similarities in the way birds and babies learn to 'talk' (Phys.org) —A team of researchers from Japan, Israel and the U.S. has found evidence that suggests birds and human infants learn to string syllables together in roughly the same way: through stepwise improvement. ...
  6. Very tough decision but keeping in mind what is best for this grey is giving him a chance to find the right situation.

A big soul in a little soft feathered body.
  8. Judy I think we are all subject to change as times moves along especially when we have these Greys helping us.
  9. Peace for the family and those who witnessed.
  10. Sweet progress all sounds well and keep trying with the veggies it can take a very long time before they try something new.
  11. How cute, it is a small world we have a Cockatiel at the Sanctuary named budgie bird.
  12. You might recognize it as a Wax plant, you often see them sold as easy keeping indoor plants. This one is a more uncommon version with very small leaves it is a vine by nature and comes from a very large family. http://www.international-hoya.org/
  13. Fortunate dog and woman, what a huge mess to deal with now and to think we whine a bit about droppings on our clothes and furniture.
  14. She may be a bit clumsy wile wearing the collar especially when it is all new to her. Just act like every thing is normal and that will help with her adjustment.
  15. You are living with some beautiful birds!
  16. These birds all needed some one who cares and they found their way to you. I think that what ever the underlying cause is you and the Vet will both do your best to help him and that includes your love and compassion which cannot be undervalued. Ask your Vet if you can put some Milk Thistle into his diet to help detox and clean the Zinc from his system.
  17. I am excited my small leaf Hoya that I hung under the Magnolia tree in the back yard is blooming! Haven't had a Hoya bloom in years so it is a big deal for me. The flowers look like this.
  18. We will wait to hear from you with fingers crossed and I know you will give a great presentation.
  19. I think she feels you working towards helping her heal no matter what approach you take as long as you project calm and assurance that all will be well. She is fighting and injury and an infection the antibiotics will take a couple of days to kick in and make a noticeable difference. Hang in there you and we will send our best wishes and any healing energy we can muster.
  20. We have much better tools to aid us avoid getting caught unprepared. I suggest purchasing a weather radio that provides alerts or get a phone AP to do the same. Jeff Masters Tropical Weather Blog is a wonderful real time resource as well. bloggers there proveds many helpful links as well a radar screen captures and satellite views. Great to hear you are all safe Talon and getting a dry run practice is wonderful, no serious clean up after a dry run.
  21. Calm down she will feel your stress on top of her own and this too should pass. I would begin misting her with aloe Vera juice as it is soothing. She is feeling some discomfort and the dried goo sticking to her feathers is uncomfortable as well as the infection so a good soaking should provide some comfort for her. Plain water will do if that is what is available now.
  22. Many grubs are high in fat content but that type of fat content differs from the type of fat in red meats. Dan my 125 and 155 tanks are now in the garage unused, the 125 looked great with all Tetras and heavily planted.
  23. I think those droppings are an artistic expression.
  24. I think those are wax worms in your salad. I do have some freze dried mealworms I add to the birds diet on occasion.
  25. I saw that post earlier and didn't even realize she had been AWOL. duh
