  5. You can also call one of the big Veterinary colleges or Universities such a s Texas A&M University that has done years of research and teaching about Psitticines and their diseases. Most of our pet birds are raised in clean and healthy conditions these days have been vetted and have not come in from the wild so are never exposed to much of anything communicable to humans. The biggest health issues seem to be from breathing feather dust and you can avoid most of that by having a good air purifier running near your birds cage and not sleeping in the same room as your bird. You poor panicked wife should have more concerns about what our fruits & veggies have been sprayed with, what our meats have been treated with and all the pollutants in our homes and environments. Insecticides, mildew and mold PVC's can make us all sick and can kill your Grey. There are some bad breeders out there who sell birds who have exposures to diseases but those kill the birds not the humans, just heartbreak rather than risk of ill health. "I think any viral brain infection would be an encephalitis that is transmitted through a mosquito bite from bird to bird an occasionally to humans. These are not from Parrots but our Native birds such as Blue Jays, Crows and Grackles who are subject to this disease. Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious viral disease spread by mosquitoes that can affect people and horses. EEE can also cause disease in captive birds such as the ring-necked pheasant, emu, ostriches, quail and ducks. EEE infection and disease can occasionally occur in other livestock, deer, dogs, other mammals, reptiles and amphibians. EEE is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes will then occasionally feed on horses, humans and other mammals. Several species of mosquitoes can become infected with the EEE virus (EEEV). EEE is not spread person-to-person, from people to animals or from animals (other than mosquitoes) to people. 6. Happy you joined us have a look around or ask questions we are a friendly group.
  7. We live with birds, cats & dogs the dogs show more interest in the birds than our cats do. Your visiting feline is still kittenish at 3 months so may be more playful and adventurous, cats are smart and can lean what is not allowed so supervise and correct when needed. Here is a quick view of the relaxed bird & cat, dog showing an observational interest. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa264/Firefly_mom/P1000356.jpg
  8. Quite aware what a large city you live in just wondered if the local markets carried foods not available here. All the photos I have seen show what a beautiful city you live in with a very rich history as well. Love where I am but always interested to learn more of other places.
  9. Her personality is growing along with her confidence, the swamp queen rules hr domain.
  10. Just like feeding baby humans, same results and laughter.
  11. We can get some out of Florida when thy are ripe.
  12. Love the pictures, glad to meet you both. I would be interested in what you feed Badu wondering if you get closer to a natural diet that would be available in the wild where you are.
  13. Looked like Toby had a little help with that photo bomb incident.
  14. They are a reliable company and have always had excellent product. I use those stacking tray sprouters as well.
  15. Welcome to you both. You are asking great questions and getting good answers so I know you will be a positive home for this new guy in your life. Do think about getting a sleep cage for him as Greys are a dusty bird and we breather the deepest in our sleep so having him sleep in a different area would be best for your continued good health. Wonderful that you plan to spend so much waking time with him as they are a flock bird and you are to be his new flock. Looking forward to hearing about his adjustment into your home and heart.
  16. The ballad of Gus & Lilly, sounds like a Book or a Movie in the making. Love those sweet Too moments unfortunately we pay in sound damage to our ears. Life with Too's never boring ever!
  17. Good for you finding us and working around Greycies changing tastes. Another idea is to blend the veggies with a little fruit and give her a sip when she thinks it is your smoothie. You can add some ginger and lemon juice to give it some snap or add some Chia seeds for the protein and amino acids.
  18. I think Gil already knows where her heart lies, perhaps hubby may remain a bit oblivious a bit longer. lol how long can he resist the black (Grey) swamp magic girl?
  19. Glad you found us and I see you are already getting good advice. Hope to see some photos of your new buddy soon.
  20. Answering the phone for the local Parrot sanctuary I have learned first hand how sudden and silent these winged predators are. Such a shock when someone looses the bird that was perched on their shoulder to a Hawk. Beautiful but deadly. Thank you for the reminder Dan.
  21. Austin air is another very good one a little pricy but they run forever. It would be helpful to know what your Vet. was speaking about his airways.

    Sick Baby

Muse I am so sorry for your loss, they do go down so quickly and you had him in vet care very fast. Most folks would not have reacted as promptly and just had a sudden death, these birds are so very good at disguising their illnesses they can make it difficult to keep them safe. I know you are heartbroken so treasure those good memories and keep that close.
  23. Nice to meet you. You might want to think about adding some cargo nets to the hanging play area to expand the acerage. You can also hang more toys from the net.
  24. I bought a small kitchen gram scale from Bed Bath & beyond, my birds just stand on the flat surface with no problems.
  25. Frozen is fine just check for a low salt content as some have added salt and that we want to avoid.
